hey guys! so sorry I haven't been here is aaaages...
I told some of yaz about the move blah blah... plus work blah blah...
anyway I'm out of town for another weekend and then hopefully I can drop by more often.
If anyone said anything to me - would ya mind emailing me to catch up - didn't mean to miss it...

seems like I've gotten a butch of cool stuff lately.

love the new Black Angels
love a bunch of Notwist - old and new - that I'd never heard before
dig the new Beck - first couple listens has me thinkin' it's my favorite yet!
found another cool Loop disk
listen to Film School and the Lilys daily...
and Clinic..
of course - tons of SWD fills me head every day - especially with the recent touring and goodness!
I've missed out on some talk of the SWD UK dates - hopefully I'll catch up on some of it sooner than later.

Darker My Love has their new disk up on myspace for a listen - sounds really freakin' awesome!
Can't wait to buy it!
looks like they're coming my way with the Dandy Warhols in a couple months = YES!
although - I haven't been very interested in the little I have heard of the Dandys later work - but, I still love the first couple disks they did...

Yeah Rocket - Darker My Love sound f-n-a! Sound like a mix of Ride and Black Rebel Motorcycle at their rock'n best. Vocal harmonies are huge. Good choice. I'll pass this onto a few friend thank-you kindly..

loper, i don't know if i've mentioned it before, but ELO are one of my all-time favorites. a pleasure so guilty i'm not even ashamed anymore. in fact, when people ask me what my band's new material is going to sound like, i proudly reply "a cross between swervedriver and ELO" (no joke. i actually said this in a radio interview recently), to much scratching of heads. fuck 'em.

anyway, today's favorite: silversun pickups' latest release. really cool.

Yeah, ELO just recently started blowing my mind. It's so easy to overlook them because they so frequently show up in thrift store bins. That later album, Zoom blew my head off. Jeff Lynne is simply an amazing writer.

Yeah, Swervedriver and ELO would definitely get my attention.

I finally got my hands on the newest R.E.M.
I gotta say - I wasn't seeking it out at all - I thought I was done with R.E.M. - no lookin' back.
But, and old buddy of mine pulled out the disk last weekend at the lake and I was pleasantly surprised by how great it was. Aside form the very first track - it's full of great old school style R.E.M. tunes.
I don't have it right here on me - but, I think track 5 or 6 is my song of the day...

Yeah, Accelerate is a great record. I would have loved to hear them with a bit more of a less professional, more raw recording sound, but still, the songs are great on that one.

Today I've been listening to Stravinsky-Rite of Spring and some Albert Ayler, from Love Cry. I can see where Zappa lifted some stuff (probably unintentionally) from ol' Igor, and Varese outright stole things, but...

these guys continually blow me away with the amazing use of multilayered vocals, right up there with the beach boys and queen.

i was aware of zoom when it came out and have seen the video of the ensuing tour, but i am not really familiar with the album itself. i'll have to check that out. i liked the "new" bonus tracks jeff lynne did for the rereleases of the older albums. have ya heard these? old unfinished tracks from the 70s that he went back an recently completed. neat stuff.

so along those lines, today's song...

"the prophet's song" by queen. it's like bohemians rhapsody's equally brilliant but overlooked twin brother.

Well, Varese is intense. There are passages which are calm and reminscent of quiet Stravinsky passages, like in Rite of Spring, but then he gets explosive, and I mean explosive with percussion, huge horn swells, and even things not usually used in Symphony like castanets, and...a siren...yes, a siren. One day, I got so flustered listening to it, I tried to smash the CD in my garage. To no avail, the bloody thing survived and I just ended up buying a new copy anyways, because it was finally starting to grow on me. Not casual listening..it's a challenge. He was not very prolific, so it's possible to get most of his works on one or 2 CDs. I'd recommend this one (you probably won't want more) with Boulez conducting the Chicago Symphony. http://www.amazon.com/Boulez-Conducts-Var%C3%A8se/dp/B00005KBJS/ref=pd_bbs_7?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1218205284&sr=8-7
