Decoder Ring - Protein Express

I finally got hold of the whole EP, more of the same good gear!

Jaguar - I was wondering if the big lp pictures are only given out to the big cats of the jungle, or if us small fry can get a hold of them too. Just that i struggle to find full size ones on the net via google. Where do ya get them?

Also it was interesting to see that a few are into Magnet. What were ya doing down the easy listening end of the record store?

Hey Jaguar - my Pop didn't have Anthology of British Blues but he did say that he had a record set called "White Boy Blues" or something like that that has a lot of early British stuff like the Yardbirds, Kinks, Stones, etc.
Can't wait to hear it!

Yo Eugene - I was asking you if you had heard about 3 Track Mind because my dad heard a song by them on his satellite car radio and loved them. I just wandered if you had heard of them because you both seem to have similar taste in folk and jazz. After I wrote to you - I found a link for him to buy the CD - so I will hear them at some point down the road... From what I read - 3 Track Mind can be described as an alternative folk group.

Has anyone noticed that this thread actually has 856 Replies - AND - 6,558 Read.!?
that's alot of people reading - for a Website based on a band that has been un-officially defunct for several years!
It just goes to show what an impression Swervedriver made on music lovers around the world!

No doubt dude - yet... it's still not enough!
I can talk about music 24/7 and be completely fulfilled - (especially when it has to do with Swervedriver)
O.K.... maybe not "completely" - but still - fulfilled. Infact, this forum is kind of like my musical Diary - You can look back at things you liked - look up certain pages to find a new CD to buy - I practically use it like a text book music guid.
75% of the other people in my life want to talk about work - where do you think the extra "F" came from in my sig for the day?
I've been stoked about Jez poppin' in... ya snooze ya loose.
BTW - Iv'e got "Kill the Superheroes" from the Live at JJJ radio Australia crankin' - fucking incredible! (can't wait to here Lopers B-Side live Mix!)
Also BTW - Minus the Bear is killing me. I love them = can't believe I've missed them up until now. Great lyrics - great vocal sound - great song structure - interesting notes and rythms and chords! awesome - I recommend ANY of their stuff = don't think you can go wrong with these guys!

The Faces - "A nod is as good as a wink...to a blind horse"

At their best, these guys beat the Stones at their own damn game. They singlehandedly invented the "elegant wino rock dude" thing.

This is pure rock and roll, and a damn fine LP.

Minus the Bear is playing a show in Seattle toward the end of August with The Helio Sequence, and the Thermals. That'd be fun. I'm gonna try and see them 9/5 in Albuquerque with Paris, Texas. After that they are heading East. Their website doesn't have much info, but if they come to a town near you, see them! They pull off everything on their records live. Very good show, and cheap. I think the show in ABQ is $8.

How huge is that album Cover!!! Its John Holmes Sized!

It was also a bit of an accident, it didnt look that big on the page i ganked it from.

After a big weekend of lovin and tunes, shit, its gotta be something by Magic Dirt again, maybe "Ice" off Life Was Better. Love the GT stripes on this EP. Its muscle car music.

But listening to it after years away from these 2 eps (Signs Of Satanic Youth being the other EP) I found they smacked of Sonic Youth circa 1990 or Goo (thats close isnt it?). Now I want a copy of Goo to compare.

The Tar song was before work...now it's after and it's all about

"Elected" - Alice Cooper.

The best rock anthem you've never heard. Never, ever overlook the first handful of Alice Lp's.

764-Hero - "Terrified of Flight"
off "Weekends of Sound" = great CD!
hey Moenkopi - have you ever heard "Get Here and Stay", "Salt Sinks and Sugar Floats" or "We're Solids"?
I noticed the first 2 were '96 and '98 releases - and since I seem to like Weekends of Sound a little bit more than
Nobody Knows This is Everywhere - I figure the first 2 might be even better!!??

"Salt Sinks" and "Solids" are a little rougher. I think their best two albums are "Weekends" and "Get Here and Stay." "GH&S" is fantastic, very similar in feel to "Weekends." "Whenever You See Fit" is great too, that's their combined ep effort with Modest Mouse.

"NHG" is dense, and a little angrier maybe? The title "Iceland" elludes to the fact that we're really kind of on our own in the end, so the music follows that idea. Their second is much more subdued, but just as emotionally intense. Every person I've ever introduced to tHe Drop thought they were ok at first, then completely fell in love with them, then had to have the cd's taken away because they wouldn't stop listening to them.

Moe - those are tough parenting skills you are honing! I can easily see that I am quickly becoming addicted myself - luckily... I have so much new stuff I won't have a chance to get stuck on just one CD. I saw Iceland was for sale on Amazon - used - for just under $3! That hardly seems fair... yet, it will soon be mine! (evil laughter) HA HA HA HA HO HO HO HO HEE HEE HEE HEE HEEEEEEEEEE (cough cough) HOO HOO HOO HOO HOOOOOO....

Today... (I don't mean to sound redundant but...)
Black Rebel Mororcycle Club - "In Like A Rose"
off - Take Them On, On Your Own
It's been a few weeks since I listened to these guys and I almost forgot how much I love them - above so many other newer bands.
Here's my deal... yesterday, I pulled out one of my favorites from the old days
= Charlatans UK "Some Friendly" - and I was surprised how I didn't like it near
as much as I did back when I got it - 1990 - or whenever it was... I decided
that basically, although I like the soaring quality of the vocals, they were too
high pitched for what I am more naturally drawn to. Infact, I was shocked how
high the vocals were! Don't get me wrong - I would still say that I like
Charlatans UK - but, in general, my particular taste in vocals must be evolving.
Obviously, my favorite band ever is Swervedriver. Adam Franklin has the
perfect blend of cool soaring vocals with a deeper more masculine tone.
That's also what I love about BRMC - and lyrics don't have to be oversung
either - but, they do need to be present enough to direct the song.
Snow Patrol is another example - the vocals are almost a whisper -
yet still dynamic and present. It works nicely in "shoegazer" stuff too -
I love the vocals for Highspire... there are a million other bands that I could reference but I'll stop there.
It's not that I don't still like a variety of sounds - or a range in vocals -
but, I do prefer a more masculine style of vocals.

Ofcourse - I can think about this a bit and totally contradict myself,
first and foremost - on the high end of vocals = Janes Addiction!
Highspire actually has both high and low vocal range - yet stil soft - not ear piercingly high...
same with Muse...
Built to Spill, Ride, Tripping Daisy...
- again, I guess I could find a million examples of times that I like higher vocals.
Sometimes I like it with Mars Volta - sometimes it's too piercing.
maybe it was just my mood yesterday while listening to Charlatans UK.
It wasn't all of their songs that surprised me - just a few that stood out...

There is some commercial with the ravonettes which sounds great everytime it comes on. Don't know which song it is...

every now and again i go way back and cover my favorites over the very long years and the white album made it's way on and i don't know who said swervedriver had a lot of beatles in there but after listening to the white album i would say they made it into a lot of music through the years except maybe rap, but I don't know much about rap so i might be wrong, whatever

if there was a school of rock i would make the white album an entire course.

I would love to pick a favorite song but it's hard. funny i used to love this album as a kid but i had no appreciation till now 30 or so years later. some good things to being old.

Has ya new wagon got a cd player Jtrain? I hope so bro.

I had a swervie day also after Moe's Animated WAB got me goin this mornin as i drove through the fog, love that tHe Drop track man.

But Jamesg sent me some live swervedriver and i loved the interview and how absolutely rockin they played after talking quietly to the radio chick. I laughed at the windscreen when the early stages of For Seeking Heat arced up. It seemed audacious!

These past few days, I have been diggin' on Pollyanna and Violetine, courtesy of the Croz'. Kings of Leon tune is superb also; wonder what the rest of their material is like. What the hell is happening to me? I haven't listened to my usual retro stuff since you folks have arrived...hmmm, maybe it's for the best. I better go home and put some Gord on, before I lose perspective (Lightfoot that is).
