Oh dear, don't get me started on Goat. Hands down my favorite Jesus Lizard, and probably my second favorite rock band of all time. (Eugene loves the Lizard big time too)....The little five note backwards guitar thing that Denison does smack in the middle of Seasick, saved my interest in rock music back when I first heard it.

Deeper Well - Nada Surf

Saw the Lizard live with Helmet back in the day. Damn near stole the show they did. Yow gave us the tight and shiny. A day later I bought Liar and they really opened me up to some new shit. "The Art Of Self Defense", "Boilermaker", "Puss", "Slave Ship". Really opened some doors.

Push that hand - Toadies

Yeah they had some radio hits back in the day but their last album, Hell Below Me, Stars Above is clearly their best work, yet they get little recognition for it. Im also listening to The Burden Brothers, which has Todd Lewis, lead vox for the Toadies. Not bad but they cant touch the original.

Well, mostly because it not a "Floyd" sounding album to me. It has 4 great songs, but the rest of the album just doesn't "fit" for me.

p.s. The 4 great songs IMHO:

Obscured by Clouds
When You're In
The Gold It's In The . . .

It's funny you mention ObC! I have been trying to find that one again. I had it in High School, but it disappeared at some point. If I could do a top six list, ObC and Atom Heart Mother would be tied for sixth!

Well, the only reason we're upgrading is to become HIPPA compliant. All this crap about passwords and firewalls. I guess it's nice, it breaks our VPN software, but it has enabled Endnote and Word communications. Dashboard is nifty but more iCandy than anything else. Still testing apps and doing installs.

If you do it, PLEASE don't "upgrade" - do an archive/install or a wipe/install. An eager beaver in my group put it on his laptop over the weekend by upgrading his 10.3 install. Doh. HOSED.

I always imagined the singer played guitar though - guess I was wrong - or... at least he didn't play on Friday. I also don't know if the show was a re-run...

I know the show was a re-run because the band played their last show and broke up on 12/31/04. I love GbV and Bob Pollard. Bob can play guitar but doesn't. It would distract him from doing high kicks, scissor kicks, and jumps. Not to mention drinking and talking shit. I missed the show you're talking about, but that is a killer tune and I've seen 'em do it live a couple times.

Haven't posted here in a while (although I do check in)

Today I'm listening to a band (?) called the Books. Saw them last night at the Knitting Factory and picked up the new album. Right now I'm listening to "An Animated Description of Mr. Maps".

This band is OUT THERE. Not for everyone. Definitely experimental. But if you're into sound samples and bands like Cornelius and Sigur Ros, it might be for you. :)

This however, cracked me up... anyone in a band who's been asked repeatedly to categorize your music will appreciate this band's very amusing answer:

from their bio:
"Though The Books are hard to categorize they are often pressed in interviews to categorize themselves. It took them almost as long as the making of their album to come up with this remotely suitable answer: blipworld / fakegrass / speedblues / chamberclick / eccentrock / country&eastern / glitch post-anything music with samples, closely followed by "food band".

Anyway, they are on a US/Canada tour right now and I DO recommend the live show.

I have been digging the Dogs Die In Hot Cars album for a while now. Definately sound a bit like XTC, also throw in Big Country and Tears For Fears. Very 80's sounding, and thier lyrics are a bit silly at times, but over all a great album. Madina, God Hopping is a great song! The Books sound interresting....may have to check them out.

Today it's "Who's Joe," by New Order, off thier new album. The new stuff is growing on me.

wow Boomer - I just realized something (though Hayseed might have mentioned thee guys in the past?)
I had been thinking that "Click Your Heels" by On the Speakers sounded like the singer from Creeper Lagoon...
well, I finally looked it up and found that it IS the same guy - and by the sounds of that song - I might like it better than Creeper Lagoon!

Today its: I'll Stay High - Dig

I dont think to many folks remember them. They came out in the early 90's and had a minor radio hit in Believe. I swear it seemed like they had four guitarists, a bassist and a drummer. Very lush sounds with some thrash thrown in for good measure. Anyway, Im in the process of upgrading all of my cassettes to CD/MP3 and I ran across it. Good stuff.

sup Zedhead - I still haven't had the chance to check Riddle of Steel... but I will...
but, somebody did recommend a band Schooled in Victory which was found in MySpace. (check 'em out - they are from where I'm from) http://www.myspace.com/schooledinvictory
anyway - I don't get the whole MySpace thing?
what exactly is all that shit on every page?
Like on the schooled in victory page - what's all the "friends of the band stuff?
Do people really make a picture of themselves and post it? or - does the band do that list? it seemed like some pages were just people that described their likes and dislikes... is that really what they are doing?
It all seems so foreign to me...
I'm actually really not joking - I could hardly stand lookin' around the place very much.
Some of the stuff I tried to look up it wouldn't let me because it said I needed to become a member - I almost signed up and then decided there might be too much shit involved...

Rocketman,

There is some Riddle Of Steel on one the WABs I sent out. Theyre from St Louis and it is utterly baffling that they are not more popular. They put most other well known bands to shame. Their rythm section is tight as all get out. I think Croz listed Kissing In Secret as one of his favs and its a brilliant choice. Give it a listen if you can and you'll understand all the hoopla.

If life is but a dream, wake me.

I dunno if it's available anywhere (and I'd have to do a bit of research to see if I get this right - it's been awhile) - check for anything by Scratch Acid out of Austin, TX. 80s Touch & Go fodder that was the precursor to the Jesus Lizard. "Owner's Lament", "She Said", "Mary Had A Little Drug Problem"... I know "Beserker" was the title to one of their releases...

Argh - I want my memory cells back, dammit!

Gotta split for train now later!

I reakon i had Kissing In Secret on my last WAB.

Today

Proppellerheads - On Her Majesty's Secret Service
at the 6:50 mark the horns give way to the bass in a big shake up of the track. It would have to be one of the best changes in any song ive ever heard. If it wasnt 10 minutes long id put it on my next WAB.

Does anyone know how to shorten MP3's?

Croz - Mac or PC?

A free way to do it on the mac is with iMovie. Here's my OSXFAQ hint on that:
http://www.osxfaq.com/tips/krug/index2.ws

if it's a PC, I'm sure if you type "mp3 edit" into the PC Versiontracker somehting will show up.

Okay, I did it for you:

http://www.versiontracker.com/php/search.php?mode=basic&action=search&str=mp3+edit&plt%5B%5D=windows&x=0&y=0

Not much freeware, but I didn't go past page 1...

"Owner's Lament", "She Said", "Mary Had A Little Drug Problem"... I know "Beserker" was the title to one of their releases...

Argh - I want my memory cells back, dammit!

Gotta split for train now later!

Oops almost forgot - "Why Can't I Touch It" - Buzzcocks

Touch and Go released a disc called The Greatest Gift which is essentially everything Scratch Acid released. Great collection.

Cool Madina - I live about 5 min. drive away from Westport in K.C., and Lawrence is about 45min. drive away - keep me posted.

Hayseed AND Croz - damn - I hate it when I over look WABs tunes! I'll check which disks they were on... remember one from your last round Hayseed only had a few songs before the disk went blank...

Croz - put the whole thing on brother!

Today, its the first two songs off of Blinker The Star's "Still In Rome": Still In Rome and Get Together.

Coming soon to a WAB near you.

Speaking of which, Rocket, you said that on one of my WABs was bunk? Do you remember which one? Winter at Burnies or The Mustang Sound? And Croz, I havent forgot you mate. Youre going to get a crap load of stuff here in a few weeks.

If life is but a dream, wake me.
