Today - "When You Feel Miserable" by Starflyer 59 off Gold.

Actually feel pretty good today, despite not getting any sleep thanks to 8 month old deciding to want to eat at 11:45 PM, 12:30 AM, 1:15, etc. Let the iPod randomly serve up everything I have by Starflyer 59 on the morning commute. Great stuff. Thanks hayseed for showing me the way...

speaking of hip-hop, today's song o' the day was "home of the brave" by mr. lif, from the "emergency rations" ep.

"Love On The Dole" - by Moose
from their lovely 1995 lp "Live A Little Love A Lot".

quite probably one of my top 5 songs of *all time*.
hell, I'm comfortable/secure enough with my sexuality to say that Russell Yates' vocals on that track sound downright sexy.

fantastic LP with Liz Frazier (Cocteau Twins) making a backing-vocal appearance on the opening track.

I love Moose!
I love all that they have done actually. I have a bunch of mp3's of their early stuff (I'll have to check to see if I have your song) and also own High Ball Me - which is awesome.
"Jack" is one of their songs I remember really lovin'....

right on, rocket.
yeah, "Jack" is definitely fantastic.

in my opinion, by the time that their first LP came out in 1992 (...Xyz), they had pretty-much done well to separate themselves from the "shoegaze" pigeonholing.
of course, music reviewers/critics continued to drop their name along with the likes of all the other "shoegaze" bands at the time.

incidentally, I always thought is was pathetically lazy when people included Swervedriver in with the list of 'gazers.
what the hell? just because they were label-mates with Slowdive & MBV?

regarding Moose, I'm such a fanatic, that the promo-only radio-edit version of "This River Never Will Run Dry" (original version from their "Reprise" ep - 1991) was the song that my wife and I danced to at our wedding.
"awwww!"

I've got it all, so let me know if your collection has voids that need filling.

Today...
Super Furry Animals - "Mario Man"
off - Fuzzy Logic

so... I heard this CD with new ears today my friends. when I first got it - I wasn't that crazy about it.... but, then Boomer put some killer SFA song on a WAB mix (what album is that on btw?) and so, today I felt like listening to my old disk on the way to work. I really liked it today? - don't really know why - I think I've had it for about a year and only have listened to it 2 or 3 times. With all of my other new disks I bought at the same time - Fuzzy Logic lost it's spot in my CD case and got filed away with my older stuff. Well, I love Park Life era Blur - and that is really what this album sounds like. I think I go through stages where I only want kind of serious rock - and this album is really pretty light hearted and bouncy - but, it is clever, catchy and well produced.

"brakhage" by stereolab, from 1997's "dots & loops"

man, what a friggin' jam this song is... even if it borrowed its groove from curtis mayfield's "move on up".

apparently it's sacrelidge among stereolab fans to say this, but "dots and loops" is my fave lp to date. of course, it helped that john mcentire (tortoise, sea & cake) had a hand in the production.
the fourth track "diagonals" is another gem that makes it just impossible to sit still during.

i like the second SFA album Radiator better. Fuzzy Logic is cool but its a bit patchy in comparison, Guerilla and Mwng also have their moments but i don't really like the later stuff.

No way, I totally agree. Dots and Loops is amazing. In my opinion, they were another MBV clone when they first came around, and since Dots, they've gotten less and less interesting to me. The writing on that LP is incredible. I remember Prisoner of Mars being the one that I was geeking over. There's another, but I can't remember the title.

Crap. Why does this keep happening? Maybe I should forget Starflyer 59 before I jinx them.

hayseed, what's this about Starflyer 59 being a Christian Rock Band? Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just haven't picked up on it in their songs.

heh, yeah.

I saw them live a few times around 1995...every show I attended was held in a church. I recall jason martin always thanking "the lord, jesus christ" during their sets.

you're right, though. none of it's in-yer-face, christianity-spitting music. not that I ever noticed, anyway.

Hadn't the slightest idea about SF59. Wont change my opinion of them however.

Today's favorite is How To Handle A Rope by QOTSA.

Speaking of which, Im going to see QOTSA and Interpol tomorrow here in Chicago. Ive been dying to see both bands for a long time. Sucks having to go by myself but no one around listens to the type of music I like, including Mrs. Hayseed. Oh well, it wont keep me from enjoying it.
