rocketman - I grabbed a few songs from the iTMS back after hearing them on Hayseed's Winter at Burnies mix, ended up buying them all, so yes.

Hayseed - I also like "Loved Ones" off Old. I also am kinda partial to "All My Friends Who Play Guitar" off Leave Here a Stranger. I guess my Favorite Album is Americana - quite a bit heavier than Old. I am the Portuguese Blues follows in that same vein, but I guess Gold is #2 for me - currently can't shake "Duel Overhead Cam" out of my head. They are a really good band to put on random and just listen.

I can't believe I had never heard them before your WAB mix - and I double can't believe I missed them live by 1 week.

Boom,

Agreed. There is nothing that I enjoy more than a moody SF59 song that pops up at random on my Ipod, cruising down the highway late at night after a long day at work.

They also have so many albums and songs, it is indeed awesome to put them all in a playlist and just let it go.

If life is but a dream, wake me.

Miles Davis - Footprints

If you're not versed in 60's jazz, Miles' pre-electric band is a great place to start. If I could play guitar like Herbie plays piano on this one, my life would be complete.

that's a bumbling bummer boomer! - about missing SF59 that is...

yeah - it's a tough call for me Hayseed man - they kind of rotate around depending on my mood just like the Swervedriver collection does.
Many mornings on my way to work "Can't Stop Eating" is my first choice!

Today...
The Stills - "Lola Stars And Stripes"
off - Logic Will Break Your Heart

I hear ya, loud and clear!

hey interloper, do yourself a favor and check out the footage of your man herbie (along with my man, tony) on stage with miles:
http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/tonywilliams1.html

all four clips are stellar.
I always have a hard time picking my jaw up off the floor when I listen to (or watch) those cats.

I'd be curious to see and hear what they're sounding like live these days.
it's been about 8 years since I last saw them live, and to be perfectly honest, I was never really that impressed with their live sound. especially in the "silver" and "gold" era, when big thick guitars was a big part of the sound. it was always just the 3 guys on stage, and it always sounded like the mix needed a second guitar to "fill it in".

the fashion focus was the last record I bought by them (I love that record), and the new tunes seemed like they'd not need the second guitar quite as much anymore...of course, it probably became necessary for them to have a fouth guy on stage anyway, to play the keyboard parts!

I do have that old, rare "plugged" live CD by them (recorded New Years Day, 1996), and they're "live" sound sounds better to me "recorded". . . go figure.

anybody caught them live "recently"?

Pink Floyd - Raving and Drooling

This song eventually developed into "Dogs" from the Animals LP. It makes frequent appearances on bootlegs from the previous tour. I fuckin love 70's Floyd.

"Hyperventilation" - Brian Jonestown Massacre

thanks, 'loper

Floyd was my favorite band in high school. I have at least 20 boots on vinyl - many of them pretty crappy. None of them beat the CD I have that was recorded from the Laserdisc of Live at Pompeii. The Echoes on that puppy - wow. From the mid 70's I have one called Omayyad that's pretty good, as is the Crackers 3 disc set (which I ruined playing so much). Most of my LP's were played once to record onto casette then stashed safely away, except for some Floyd and <gasp> Metallica. The latter was the only way I could fall asleep at night. Let's just say the grooves are pretty wide on my ride the lightning LP.

drop nineteens - "deleware"
AND
january - "all time"
both off em's second WAB

drop nineteens have been on my "want list" forever and somehow I have never bought it?! - but I need to now!
and
january is very cool. That tune reminds me a bit of the Engineers.

'I Dare You' - Brian Jonestown Massacre
Hey 'loper, I didn't know about the Raving and Drooling title for that song. I knew Waters wanted that one to go on the 'Wish You Were Here' LP but Gilmour shut him down as it didn't fit with the Syd theme of the album. I heard it was called 'You've Got To Be Crazy'. Anyhow, it added to the developing animosity between the two.

good stuff.
unfortunately, january disbanded last year, so they only got out two lps and a few singles. both lps are well-worth tracking down.
sarah peacock (from seefeel) played bass for january.

drop nineteens. . . their version of madonna's "angel" (also from the "delaware" lp) is absolutely gorgeous, as is the rest of that album.
I could never get into their seond lp ("national coma"), though.

My mistake. Raving and Drooling turned into Pigs. I had the wrong Animals track.

the female vocalist/guitarist had left, and the overall style had become a little more hard and harsh.
I guess, to me, it's more of a "rock" lp than it is a good guitar record with good male/female vocal harmonies etc.

not that this means much of anything, but I don't think I've come across anybody who was in love with "delaware" that wasn't disappointed with "national coma" for approximately the same reasons I gave.

"You Are Chains" - Secret Machines. I know this has been out for a year now, but I can't seem to shake it.

Also, while piggin out on BBQ ribs and beer this past weekend, I heard tracks off the first Scorpions record, "Lonesome Crow" (1972). Kinda sounds like Black Sabbath Lite, and Klaus Meine's vocals are not so, uh... theatrical. Good stuff.

Super early Scorpions is great stuff. Doesn't even really sound like the same band.

I don't have a favorite song today, I'll opt for a book instead. Anyone out there into recording music should find and read the Tape Op book. It's put out by a company called Feral House who have some incredible books.
