A hard working fan named Charlie just sent a link to a swervedriver mashup.

"So here goes--I just started doing mashups, and my first one was Swervedriver vs. Jay Z."

Check it out at the link below and give him some feedback in this post.

Well, if I was forced to listen to rap, I'd definitely want SWD as the backing band. Not bad, great timing. The only thing I thought was out of place was the mouth-spit "manual" scratching, but hey, I'm not a rap afficianado (nor a spelling one, either). It's by far the best rap song I've ever heard, hands down.

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words. Most people I'd played it for hadn't heard "Rave Down", so I wanted to know what some fellow fans thought. If I do another SWD mashup, you'll be the first to know!

Cheers,
Charlie

I have listened quite a few times now and I have some criticism I hope is constructive. The chorus part works very well but I don't think all the intermittent Jay Zisms are working. For instance I think the "turn the music up in the headphones" at the end of Adam singing (:56) is a missed opportunity. I think it starts a bit too late and could result in a much better effect with another sample.

The main part over the rave down chord progression really works for me though. The end rocks too around 2:05

Do more of these please.

Good points. For me, the "punchline" is the way the hook from both songs line up. Then, the chorus of both songs work well together, as does the Jay Z verse over the double-time part near the end.

That's the essence, really, but this being my first one, I couldn't leave well enough alone. (Believe it or not, the very first version was even busier than this one.) The "turn the music up..." sample and the beatboxing (mentioned by Peter, above) might be overstating my case. In the latter case, I was baited by a SWD line--"...beatbox my brains to bits"--but I didn't have to bite.

The feedback has been very helpful. I'll post to this topic again when I have a final mix. And, from the sounds of it, I can't beg off doing new one so I'll post when I have that, too.

In the meantime, if anyone has weird or one-off stuff (especially "Raise" era) to share, on CD or in mp3 format, that would help a lot. (I'm thinking of acapellas, instrumentals, b-sides, bootlegs, etc.)

Thanks,
Charlie

I did get around to incorporating your comments into the final mix of the song:

(This is the same link as before except all lower case.)

Thanks once again for your help. I'll return when I have another one.

Cheers,
Charlie
