Yeah I went to the Thursday night Dinosaur Jr gig - I too was totally impressed. Not just with the band either - it was the first time I'd seen the Metro go out of their way to promote the purchase of earplugs due to "loudness"! Well my mate and I bought some but it didn't really help - we were kinda up the back near the top bar (ease of access to beer you see...) yet our bodies were vibrating heavily from the loudness. 2 encores, a typically surly rant from Lou, and a sensationally loud version of Tarpit really brought home how awesome these guys still are. I was kinda scared that J would be wheeled out in a wheelchair but man, can he play! It also totally rocked that they only played stuff off their first 3 albums - how many bands do that??

Er, apparently Alice in Chains are touring this summer. It seems they performed recently with Phil Ansemo from Pantera and some dude called William Duvall who I've never heard of but seems like will be filling in for Mr Staley. Anybody know anything about this guy? I'm not quite sure how I feel about this situation, I think maybe they should leave it alone.

SIANspheric was beautiful last night. Got the video of the show - only 40 minutes. I hope the sound is okay - had to use the camera's built-in mic since my connection to the board did not work. If the sound is good (can't hear right now, head still ringing off the hook), if the WABbers are interested I can put it on ye olde DVD with my next disc.

Nice bunch of guys, too. Played really tight.

some woman called sophia (of lights) was playing at the cake shop tonight in new york. I called to make absolutely sure that it wasn't sophia/robin P-S and the guy said that I wasn't the first person calling to ask. He said he is going to try and get them to come over... I am too old to really believe that, but I guess you never know... fingers crossed.

The Black Keys, were a bit of a disappointment. I could have seen Animal Johnson locally and had a better night. I didnt realise they were a 2-piece. If you listen to their lp it sounds like there are at least 2 guitars playing. 10am Automatic has a section during the guitar solo that, when i play it in my car, startles me with a big guitar riff through the left side speakers only. I love it. It didnt happen live. Bugga.

Rubber Factory is a good album. I knew they were
a 2-piece when I got the album so I noticed all
kinds of shit on there that it would take more than
two people to play.

Did they play Stack Shot Billy or Grown so Ugly?

You are most probably right Mattw. I am so ignorant of how music is put together. I wish i knew how to explain my thoughts about music better. Its almost a foreign language for me.

Definately played Stack Shot Billy and 10am. They are the only two i know the names of. They told us they were playing a heap of stuff off their new lp which was due out in 6 months or something like that.

I love that guitar effect in 10am talked about above. I know you have terms for that effect of having the music coming from one ear only or strafing from one ear to the other. Its an effect that gives me goosebumps sometimes. Its not used that often either. I would have thought there would be a whole swag of tracks that use it, even more so in the electronic side of the traps. I was talking to friends about it at the Black Keys, they told me about quadrophonic technology of the 70's and talked of a mates dad who had a quadrophonic audio setup in his house and they had all listened to Pink Floyd there. They are all PF fans still. So why did it die? 'Loper - youd know about this id have thought.

Again, sorry for my ignorance.

I'm no musical expert either, but being a fan of the White Stripes and the Kills, both 2 piece bands,
I have alot of experience hearing things that two people couldn't play. The Kills use a drum machine, but other
than that, I think they stick to one guitar for the music, the girl just sings as far as I know. But the White Stripes
put loads of shit in there that they couldn't do live.

Last night's Life and Times/Pelican/Mono show was AMAZING!

Life and Times sounded sooo much better than in the dump they played in last time. Pelican was perfect, although I missed part of their set and was relegated to the back of the venue. Mono sounded beautiful. Of course I missed their 2 song show live on campus at lunch yesterday. Argh! Very impressive overall. I thought the pairing of Life and Times with Mono/Pelican was a bit strange, but it worked out great with the place packed for all 3 bands. The show went real late - I am sleepy. Where's my drug of choice - there's my coffee!

w00t 2 weeks until Sonic Youth! Never gotten to see them live so hopefully it will rock, anyone seen them in the recent past? Kinda unsure of what kind of setlist they'll be playing and I'd like to make the wife a mix of songs to expect. I'd imagine it will be heavy sonic nurse and rather ripped tracked.
Boomer or any GA guys want to get up for the show? We are going to the Orange Peel in Asheville since the ATL date was during a weeknight.

Awesome rocket! You know I went out and picked up the EODM cd this past week, a little late to the party I know. :)
I can see them rockin' hard for sure.

Thats good news Melwas. Give a nice shout out for Rachel Goswell during the show for me. I'd imagine that she's not touring at this point because of her health issues?

been away from the forum for a while as i've recently had to move to munich for work. will be here for about a year. and yes, it's world cup mayhem over here - 30,000 people out on the main street the other night when germany beat poland - truely crazy but loads of fun. really hoping australia performs well against brazil.

the reason for the post is to provide some feedback from recent gigs i went to in munich (there are so many outstanding bands coming through here! - i guess australia really is out of the loop for international acts). first gig i went to was the new pornographers. cool venue and awesome atmosphere - everyone was just so happy to be there. lots of crazy banter from the band including a quick rendition of highway to hell.

however, the gig that really blew me away was brian jonestown massacre - yep, anton is alive and kicking and playing outrageously good music. apparently he is off all the drugs and really concentrating on the music. played heaps from methodrone so it was quite shoe-gazey, just the way i like it. the venue was tiny but created atmosphere. can't really describe how good BJM sounded but for me it was possibly best sounding gig i've been to. in addition, the support act was the lovetones from australia - has anyone heard these guys? the main guy is from drop city - they were brilliant too and similar sounding (the main guy actually wrote some songs for BJM). although i'm a little biased as i met some of the guys at the pub before the gig as we watched australia score 3 goals in 8 minutes against japan! they put me and my friends on the door! anyway, i didn't really know BJM were still doing stuff but if you get the chance, go see 'em, particularly if shoegaze is your thang.

Haven't been to any gigs in ages but its like waiting for a bus, you wait for ages then two come along at once.

Went to see 'Alice in Chains' last tues. I was as sceptical as the next guy but something told me I had to go. I never got to see them with Mr Staley and the replacement guy did a pretty good job (he was clearly the weak link in the band though - who were tight as you like). They basically played the whole of Dirt and a couple of tracks off the other albums. I got drunk and I enjoyed myself, even though I am generally opposed to replacing key members of bands especially frontmen. Saying that, if AIC brought out an album of new stuff with this guy I wouldn't be in the slightest bit interested.

Then on Thursday I went to see Joe Jackson play with the ever present Graham Maby on bass and Dave Houghton on drums (he played on the first three albums). Joe Played a grand Piano and the setting was very minimal. He played a lot of new stuff mixed in with some classics and some covers. I've seen Joe before and he's always good, but I sometimes question the setlist he picks (he will always play his biggest hits, but when you've had a career spanning 30 years you're never going to keep everyone happy). An excellent display of musicianship from all three of them and woerh checking out if you're a Joe fan (I think he might have done his US leg already though).

Saw José González at somerset house last friday, he was supported by a woman i couldn't understand nor did i recognise. The second support was the memory band who were surprisingly good. They did a cover of a song that goes "You were the best girl, that i ever had." I missed the name of the song, and I still can't work out what song it was!

José was great, but still his shy self; he didn't introduce any of his songs and only spoke to say hello and introduce the backing band. He played a great version of Massive Attack's Teardrop but to my dismay he didn't play Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Now I just can't wait for Reading festival to come along!

Nah not my scene anymore Croz, first went to Reading when I was 14 (Ten years ago now!) and I got the festival thing out of my system by about 2000 (taking in most of the major ones here in that time). I went to Download last year with my mates band though but I had a AAA pass and it was only for one day (I vowed then I would never go to another festival unless I had backstage access - and free beer!). I don't like a lot of new music so my time would be wasted (as well as my mind!). Although if you could transport me back in time to Reading 1991...

Hmm, good question:

Primal Scream
The Vines
Floggin Molly
The Kooks
and Pearl Jam

Those have to be the top contenders I think.

Also want to try to check out Russel Brand in the comedy tent. I don't like him on big brother but he was really funny on jonathon ross.

Silversun Pickups put on a great show - highly recommended. Dirty on Purpose were okay, kinda flat. Bassist seemed to do all the work - that guy had 12 pedals hooked up to his bass! Silversun was the middle band, but everyone left after their set. I think that's why DoP was not so great.

Reading was so incredibly disappointing. So much so I've come home a day early. The only half decent performance I saw was by the Arctic Monkeys and the Automatic. The crowd seemed different this year too, quite a lot of total pratts running about.

ROCK! Amazing show! Thanks, Croz, for reminding me about this band. They played all the tunes on their forthcoming album - great stuff.

Yeah im looking forward to their new LP. I think it was them who wanted US$10 to send me a copy via boat! Or I could pay up to US$65 to get one expressed. I emailed them about this fiasco but no reply yet. Boomer, i might get you to help me out instead.

Gotta be spewing about that Mel! Total Pratts could be a good song title for you to spoof it for us. Ive never heard of the Automatic. What are they like?

I just got back from the second snow trip and managed to see a show there. Endorphin played in the local pub. He's an electronic artist which is basically dance music now. His first two lps were much more interesting. Apparently he has this amazing studio in the Daintree Forests in Queensland - a massive window overlooking the middle canopy, which helped create really moody music back about 5 years. It seemed that the shitty snow corrupted his flow a little, though i still ended up dancing like a freak to his encore which involved big GW and John Howard masks and lewd stage dancing between the two. Funny night but not due to the music.

Cheers for that Boomer.

I really dig their sound, and being mainly instrumentals is a good thing. They would have fitted right into your WAB 9 i thought. Listening to that now as a matter of fact. Lovely straight but so much better toasted! Your kind offer would be appreciated, actually i figured out that it wasnt Maserati that had the huge postage bill, but The Fleeting Joys, after all. Show us your Loveless influence...and your rude postal prices!

I love your work Boom.

I had the pleasure of seeing Dinosaur Jr last night. I'd seen them twice before on the 'Hand It Over' tour so this was my first time with Lou. Lou was support and did a solo acoustic set which was pretty good but the crowd were largely disinterested in. As you might expect the material was mostly from the 1st 3 LPs but they did pull out 1 or 2 surprises in 'Feel the Pain' and 'Out There'. They also played some new stuff that sounded like they had never split following 'Bug'. They were very loud and very tight, J can still play the guitar like nobody's business.

Oh yeah, and 'Budge' was a personal highlight.

Crozarey- Wow I'm impressed, someone else who listens to Riddle of Steel is also a swervie. AWESOME! I saw Dropsonic w/Traindodge in Pasadena, CA in Sept. Amazing show. The drummer for Traindodge is amazing he plays drums w/his right hand and plays keyboards w/his left on a few songs. If you havent heard traindodoge yet, you should go to their myspace! http://myspace.com/traindodge If you're into Riddle of Steel, Shiner, Life & Times, Dropsonic, you should check out these bands: Houston (hehehe, NOT the rapper), Story of the Sea, Roman Numerals (in a different genre, but involve members from the Kansas City, MO scene), The Storied Northwest, Acousma, Schooled in Victory, The Stella Link, Roma 79, Burning Airlines, Channels, Jawbox, Chavez, hmmm now I'm blanking.

But speaking of 2 pc bands, you guys should check out El Ten Eleven from Hollywood, CA. Even live they pull it off, the bassist/guitarist uses 2 ssmpling pedals so it sounds like multiple instruments being played by 1 person. It's prone to minor mistakes cos you're timing has to be perfect. But you have to see them play live, they're currently not on tour at the moment but are putting the finishing touches to their new album which should be released on barnone records, maybe? check out some live videos: http://elteneleven.com http://myspace.com/elteneleven

Crozarey- I've got a ton of Riddle of Steel shows that I recorded and have gotten off of emusic.com. I'll post em on my site after I get back from NYC, altho, Chavez's recordings will take precedence over that...

Alert: If the Applseed Cast is coming to your town, there's a good chance that The Life and Times will be opening for them.

Also - Aereogramme is hitting the states in April.

None of them are coming to New Mexico. I need to move. The Pomona show, (with Appleseed Cast, the Life and Times and Jonah from Far and onelinedrawing), would be a great show ... and the new Aereogramme is FANTASTIC!

At least I get to see Calla in a couple weeks, of course it's the same night I was supposed to see Tool, until their unfortunate accident.

Danny Carey tore his bicep and had surgery not long ago, so the whole tour is postponed for now.

Never miss a show again:

iConcertCal for iTunes: This visualizer for iTunes searches the upcoming concert calendar for your area and cross-references it with the artists in your iTunes library. It works crazy well.

That's a pretty cool program. Nice. Thanks for the heads up.

I caught Calla the other day in ABQ. It's been a long time since I've had any live music. Too long. They were very enjoyable. Lotsa reverb, lotsa pedals, and their guitarist was pretty good with the looper too.

Trying to decide now whether to drive back down in two weeks for The Shins, or three weeks for Fu Manchu.

Apparently Minus the Bear is starting another tour on Thur., and they'll be playing new songs! If you've never seen them, go. Music played with feet. It's a wonderful thing.

Went to see these guys last night:

www.myspace.com/kapbambino

amazing.

They were supported by a band called Die Die Die from New Zealand who were also pretty good, can't seem to find any info on them though.
