Comment: i know it's horses for courses an' that but you don't like Mark's voice on Drive Blind?! God, that song was the first I learned to play on guitar, and the first I learned to play and sing. As far as my life goes, it completely changed direction after the Ride EP. The sheer energy, the whole "Fuck you, we don't need 'proper' singers to do this". A t-shirt, a guitar, doc marten's and a class haircut was all you needed. all this utterly appealed to me. The whole thing blew me away and breathed a force of life into me such that I decided to completely change what I wanted, my career etc. Without those two songs, I would possibly never have got into music as much as I have, and I would possibly never have found the Swervies. Sorry, I think I went off on one there... but its how I feel I suppose.

Comment: Hello People. A little bit off topic but what the hell...I remember coming here quite a while ago saying that I had been listening to some more shoegazer style stuff and that I was into My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, but didn't really like Ride. Well I decided to give them a 2nd chance a few weeks ago and what can I say, they have grown on me and I like them quite a lot. I have the Nowhere album which I really like and I got OX4 The Best of which is also great. Does anyone on here like Ride? Why not use this space to Discuss what you like about them and which songs you like the most. (if you want to, your choice). Thanks --Dave

Zzzzach: The comics thing was brief and just involved some local independents but I have showed my portfolio to some big names and got a sufficient amount of positive feedback to feel like "I coulda been a contenda". ;;;))) Unfortunately, the comics industry is having a hard go of it right now. Comment: As for the song "Superman" At first I didn't like it. It was the La's, La's. But after awhile, it reminded me of Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy (One of the bands I grew up listening to). Then I really liked it. Besides, Jez's Drumming in it rocks! As for Zwan, I like them. However, as I said before, they are doing now what Swervie was doing 10 years ago. It's too bad Swervedriver never received the exposure the Smashing Pumpkins did. They would be huge now. I guess they will forever remain one of the coolest bands many have never heard of. Dream Well Swervies...

Comment: Hey, guys My band sent out an ep to friends and "fans" over the holidays, and one of the songs was a sloppy recording of a song I wrote 11 years ago called Marquez Says. (I'm going somewhere with this.) I'd just started playing guitar (at the tender age of 19) and bought a wah pedal so I could sound like Swervie. The above-mentioned song was my first attempt at a Swervie rip-off. If you're interested, you can download it at www.thehurricanelamps.com/coal.html. It's among the coal ep downloads (all those songs are old, so nothing else to get excited about). Anyhow, interested parties get a kick out of it. -E

There was talk of a b-side complilation getting around that some one had thrown together also. Maybe we could get our heads together and work out something on this board. I am happy to pay money for these preciouses in place of a trade... dunno... OR maybe set up something on line.. hmmm.... Has anyone seen the movie Nadja... David Lynch film, weel the sound track is My Bloody Valentine and Portishead.... Wicked movie in black and white about a vampire with MBV lurking... wicked!!!! Comment: A little while back there was some talk here of SWD live recordings. Are there folks here who are interested in cdr trading or otherwise organizing a method to share some live SWD? I have a small collection and know that there are folks with larger collections... What I have is: NYC 1994 Stockholm FM 1996 (with 1990 Peel Session also) Australia FM 1998 Seattle 1998 "The Passenger is Wired" (97/98 Compilation) B sides/EP Compilation (3 cdrs) I'd love to trade for any good SWD live recordings not on my list. I also have shows from My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, My Vitriol, GBV, etc. Also, if someone has a webpage with room to post shows for all here to access them, I'd be more than happy to contribute to that as well. I'd just hope that if someone does that, others with shows would also participate. A few of us on the Catherine Wheel discussion list did that, and it turned out pretty well - see www.cwlivearchive.net. Just for the record, none of these are for sale - trades only. If interested, I can be reached at jepoffenbarger@stoel.com.

Comment: rob - Adam is the best person to answer these questions - and he does log on here periodically. As far as I know there is still a chance for a live CD. The catalogue would need to be purchased - you can't just release it without obtaining the rights. As for a 5th lp - never say never...but don't hold your breath. Personally, I think there should be a CD of b-sides, rarities and unreleased material. For those that haven't heard the "everyday rock and roll..." ep...you should rush out to get it. It's really quite amazing.

Comment: Dingram: OK, I gotcha. The riot wasn't where my confusion lay (Canadian style - a couple of hot dog stands got turned over :)), it was the "throughout the tour" reference. Should have made myself a little more clearer. That was the Soundgarden tour I'm assuming. I wan't introduced to Raise till a month after that show and was immediately hooked with Deep Seat. The rest is history. Tucker has been PE #1 more times than I can count. Usually, "pay back" games are about as tame as a Toronto riot. I think the worst you'll see is a Simon vs. Domi square off. Leafs usually loose pay back games too, like what happened in NYC a few weeks ago. Cheers! Superman is a great tune. Adam's voice through a modulator, like he's calling from a phone booth; big rumbling bass, like the its the end of the world; and the wah-wah riff, like buildings are being lept in a single bound, with the jaded lyrics, like they were written by Frank Miller himself! ;)(I was a comics artist there for a stint so forgive my bias;)). Zach, your are so right. It's huge too. Peace.

Comment: I absolutley love Bring Me The Head of the Fortune Teller. But I dislike I Am Superman, (its the lah lah lahs) and i'm sorry to say but I dont like Son of Jaguar E. I don't like the lyrics and I think its just a bad Son of Mustang Ford spin off. Like Metallica. they had Unforgiven which was ace then did Unforgiven 2 which was pretty bland. I really do love ESR it's just them two songs I can't get into. I mean its all down to perception and taste at the end of the day. Its a hard task but my 8 favourite Swervedriver songs are: in no order.... Scrawl and Scream, Zedhead, Never Lose That Feeling, Duel, Mustang Ford, Harry and Maggie, Feel So Real, Deep Seat. As you can tell... I like Raise and Mezcal...A LOT. I pretty much love all Swervedriver songs, there is only a few I am not keen on.

Comment: Fester: This would have been in April 92 I believe - I can't remember the name of the club off hand...but I'll check when I'm home tonight. The riots were pretty tame (by DC standards) - some window smashed, some chanting. It was actually more of an organized protest that turned a bit nasty. Speaking of nasty - after Tucker laid that cheap hit on Sergei Gonchar last year I nearly rioted. The Leafs are in DC on Friday and ol' Darcy is going to be public enemy number 1. Back to the "riots" - there is actually a film about the RK riots and (riot in the streets, i think) and it has some bits about the Toronto episodes as well.

Comment: I think we will have to agree to disagree on this. Superman is a great song although i can possibly see why some folk may not like it...but Jaguar E, i would never imagine anyone doubting the quality of that one. After all this talk about the merits of the albums I played Mezcal Head for the first time in a long time (its always a bit of a n'mare that, coz I have it only on vinyl, coz my CD got robbed, and the sound quality is a bit poor due to scratches) and by jolly I was amazed. Maybe mezcal Head has tipped it in front of ESR..i'll have to play that tonight (again I dont have that on CD for the same reason)(thank god for buying back up copies...sad for good) On the B sides, I love Stimulini, and Maelstrom is one of my all time faves. On the Duel EP (is it an EP, I guess not)I'd have to go for Year of The Girl over Planes. I once listened to Zedhead tripping me tits off. I had just watched a program on cooking with onions and shallots, which I thought was the best thing in the world at the time, I then Put my head between two speaker, closed my eyes and listened to Zedhead full blast. I actually thought I was dead...but in a really good way..like i was in heaven. It felt like a life changing event, until probably 2 minutes later when a cloud or a crack in the wall or something like that then became the most important thing in the universe...strange days indeed

Comment: Superman- Correctamundo! Not the best is it? Jaguar E- Good song with poor production. Something not right about the guitars for me. However... Bring me the head of the fortune teller is ballsy as fuck in my humble opinion! Here's a teaser for you all: Swervie b-sides- has the standard gone down over the years? Eg, Afterglow/Planes over the Skyline vs. Homeless Homecoming/stimulini....

He's a good button pusher to say the least. :) Dingram, little confused about the riots thing because I don't ever remember anything like that going on around a swervies show. Is that what you are refering too? Say, I threw my top 2002 out there hoping some of you would give a list of your own. I've got some gift certificates from Christmas and I need some decent ideas from you guys to go spend them on! Shame about Townsend. Real heartbreaker that. Just arrested the guys who sold him the stuff here in Canada. Manitoba to be exact. It's a very sad thing.

Comment: Raise - Perfect from start to finish. Mezcal - Perfect from start to finish. ESR - Is nearly perfect, but there are a few dud ones i think...like I Am Superman. I can't get into that song much. 99th Dream - it's got some excellent songs on it but it's a bit sketchy... if you get me. My personal favourite is mezcal head. It's exciting and hypnotic to listen to. It's like a long journey and to polish it off it has Never Learn at the end. Which is truly astonishing.

I totally respect the fact that he's playing on his own and would be glad to be able to see him playing even in a solo show and particularly on Swerve material. And the fact he's in the USA is only annoying for the chance of a follow up to 99th dream not for his career which will expand I wish

Comment: Bertrand: don't be upset that Adam is in the states or that he chooses to play Swervie songs in his sets. His solo shows are amazing and he draws on a lot of material - original, covers and swervedriver (which he wrote anyway). He's in the states because he has a better chance to keep playing than if he stayed in England. There are other reasons - but those are his and should be respected.

Comment: Traydlin: swervies have been in Toronto a few times (lovely city - terrible hockey team as long as Darcy Tucker is there). Once in toronto "riots" broke out outside the club - it was right after the Rodney King incident and ripple effects popped up here and there througout the tour. I remember standing in the middle of the crowd wishing I had my camera as "rioters" smashed a few windows...but ultimately went quietly into the night rather than tussle with the RCMP. Can't remember anything from the show...but I think that a few of the guys from Fishbone were in the dressing room.

Comment: Raise maybe good for driving across the Mojave , but as I live in UK and I dont drive, that doesnt really apply. ESR is the best for having your mates around and having on dead loud and getting pissed. Oh this makes it sound as though I dont like Raise (I love it), but I think British music reached a peak with ESR and mezcal Head, to have what is going on in those three or four minutes in a song is amazing. Raise is a bit more in line with what was happening at that time, the long sprawling guitar work outs. I just think that ESR and Mezcal sound fresher now, and havent aged a bit...(shut up dan you are rambling)

Comment: well I dont know about all that...coz I aint a musician. I just think raise just sounds a bit too murky. I dont know if this is what you are on about, but I guess Adi Vines' bass playing on Raise adds more texture to the songs wheras the bass on Mezcal (I beleive it was Adam or Jim) and on ESR (Steve) is a bit more punchy, and gave many of the songs a poppier feel. The net effect of this is that raise sounds quite mysterious whereas the rest are more direct (this isnt just because of the bass and production).Raise does sound probably more of its time, wheras I would say Mezcal Head and ESR can stand the test of time a bit better. that said if I go and listen to Raise I will get completely blown away. I think the one that does it for me is Deep Seat

Comment: Then, "I think" music is a search for yourself through sounds and Raise is this for me. It would easily fit while reading HP Lovecraft books which is what I called the Swervedriver equivalent in writing. Sorry for the blah blah but this had to be said.

Comment: The production of Raise is what makes it so good in my opinion for sure, these bass tones ambiance leading the whole thing is what I prefer, and it is also the album with the fastest rythm, an important point I guess. I also love each album, I wouldn't be here writing otherwise. But my opinion is that ESR and 99th goes the wrong way because too much effets (through higher tones)(think of Superman and Candy) are used (maybe some attempts) with the voice while the music is slower which gave this impression of "lourdeur" (slow-wittedness?) that bores me in the end, sorry to say so. That's why I can't listen to those two alums several times in a row, what I can forever do with Raise. But I know this is just a matter of taste, and ESR is quite a wonderful album.

Comment: Yeah I think ESR and Mezcal head are both as good as each other in different ways...the songwriting on ESR is pretty amazing, but for the traditional Swervedriver fan, maybe Mezcal head. Raise is very good, but it is let down by the production which is most unfortunate. It is difficult to compare raise with ESR because they are completely different in sytle. I think 99th Dream is at the bottom of the pile, which doesnt mean its no good, it just not as good as the others...although Wrong Treats might be the best song Swervedriver have ever done..in my opinion

Comment: Hmmmmmmm...Has there been an official press release on the demise of Swervedriver? No. Although I have yet to read this new Adam article, it is clear that an official thumb's down to Swervedriver was not mentioned...I would like to think that if this were the case, it would have been announced, on this site, by now. Being an optimist of sorts, until I hear otherwise, I say their still together, biding their time... Yes, they've had a disappointing go of it with respect to record companies, but that doesn't mean that they're "broken". They've just had some bad luck. It certainly wouldn't relfect on them, and frankly, I think they would be signed easily should they wish to pursue another release. There's a certain independent label in Hamilton, Ontario that I'm sure would be open to a deal, not to mention the countless contacts that they've likely made over the years. I've always been under the impression that they're a band's band and have plenty of friends in the business... As for their whereabouts, who knows? We have an idea of what Adam's been up to, and yes, it's easy to equate this to a possible split, but that doesn't mean anything. The absence of Jimmy and Steve on this board doesn't mean anything other than they wish not to post. Jez's book may be on hold for plenty of reasons. Maybe he chooses not to reveal those reasons because of other reasons, or, maybe he's just busy...My point being, they are not obligated to hang around this site because we happen to be fans. It's cool that Adam and Jez post now and then, but they don't need this site to prove that they're respected... All swervie tunes are top-notch thrill seekers, guaranteed to amaze and entertain. I agree that ESR is their best, but there is no worst... My hope is that the hiatus/break is planned. They have wives and families, friends and other goals that became more important after a very creative but frustrating run. I would have taken a break too. I just hope that everyone is ok and nothing serious has happened. Should they regroup, great, make mine a 99.;)

Comment: When is Swervdriver getting back together again?.. only joking Dave. This band was meant to be "BIG". Their beauty lies in those few who see a feeling in their music and don't associate 'big' dollars with stunning tunes. These tunes ain't the Pepsi throw-away hits, they stay with you as is proven by all of you guys..still here. Personally, I think swervedriver were at there best from the first album and then sort of faded into misdirection. Again, my opinion. Feelings fade, but new ones arise.......................eventually. Snailo (armchair philosopher)

Comment: i don't understand why is it so bad that adam wants to move on? i have more respect for someone who can keep things fresh and move with the times, and do just as good with other things that he does with how he got started. the guy never got discouraged and many a good man did, and he is still inspired to do more. it shows cause he did some really interesting things after swervedriver. some of those songs are just as expertly and amazingly written as duel was. I am really looking forward to what he is going to do. who knows they may all do something solo which could be interesting. They are musicians and music is supposed to be some form of artistic expression (and hopefully not like the big corporate manufactured groups either) they aren't paid wedding bands who perform to order. you either like it or you don't.

Comment: I understood Adam playind SWD with LBE as just a bit of friends at a party, not a SWD recreation of sorts. Besides someone who was at that party said it was only 5 tunes. Dave, SWD could still tour without a record deal and I would only say they were dropped by 1 lable: Creation. Geffen never released anything from them, so there is no loss there, and Zero Hour went under and that is the story with that.

Comment: Yeah. I guess I have lost a small amount of the "feeling". I think it is Sacrelige that Adam is playing Swervedriver's material with another band. Swervedriver will always be my favourite band without a doubt. But I have just grown bored of hoping they will return, because lets face it they wont. However if they do I will slap myself in the face and be purchasing tickets pronto. I don't honestly think they will return though. It would be too much loss of money for the record labels behalf (sorry swervedriver) but that is all that matters to labels these days. Zach, I don't think the band actually come here to read posts. I mean ok we will have the odd post from Jez and Adam. And what is to say its actually them posting anyway? It's not like you need a user name and password to post on here is it?

Comment: I came here talking (writing) just after 99th Dream was released in Europe (may 1998), and it has always been the same thing, Dave, you arrived with your tab breakthrough, and that was just, you know, something interesting during the waiting (like Jez's book) (or Toshack Highway), but what is much more annoying, it's not all the hope unsatisfied, it's the fact Adam's playing Swerve music with another band, that is the worst. And have you ever thought of the fact Stephen and Jimmy did never came here, which isn't the most difficult thing to do. Moreover, I think Zero Hour disappeared, so, yes, a label habe to be found, and that is one more obstacle to cope with. And last but not least, I've read Adam obtained a one-year 'pass' (visa? card?) to stay in the USA (where he is actually giving some live show in his own), but the other are all english, so they're probably in the United Kingdom for the moment, not the best thing to create something together I guess. Too much questions waiting to be resolved while waiting, I understand there is enough to loose the feeling even when you are totally addicted. The only thing to do actually is hoping and going to your 'disquaire'(stores) to order the EP(with b-sides), to own the biggest collection, as would do a Beatles' fan.

Comment: Dave I hear ya but dont loose that feeling mate. I think SWD will show up again and finish their "unfinished buisness" that Adam spoke of in the recent Big Takeover interview. And I am very excited and curious about what this new Toshack will sound like. Its a split with Siansheric so there may be more volume. Then again it may be just Adam doing the acoustic thing, which is still fine, but Siansheric has volume so you never know what Mr. Franklin has to offer, I know I'll buy it.

I would like nothing more than Swervie to come back for a tour/album or anything. But lets face it...I dont think it is going to happen. Just look at their history...Dropped from countless labels and then faded into obscurity. I mean are they still even on Zero Hour? If not then who is going to want to sign a band thats been dropped from loads of labels? Its a damn shame because Swervedriver could of been really BIG. and I wished they where... Comment: Believe it or not.. I finally heard year of the girl in pcu.. you have to turn it up quite a bit to recognize it.. You can hear it playing when they pull up in the red bmw with the cabinet of liqour trailing behind them.. you can hear a small fragment of the lyrics.. "does she wanna subvert...." then it cuts to another scene.. I wish it coulda been longer.. but owell. it took me about a year to find it. hehe..

Comment: part of thre reason interpol are so hyped is that one of the members is the brother of nme writer ted kessler. can't harm your career having him on board, although most writers seem to make out that he is from new york. he's a limey!

Comment: I was just reading the board and noticed the post about the road rash.. it gave me a chuckle as i'm sure the band knows they're featured in that game.. I actually had a 3do in 1994, One of my first games was road rash actually. I honestly didn't get too into swervedriver until playing the game. Although i did remember seeing them on 120 minutes in 93 for the duel video. So thank goodness for video games. A couple other places to catch them, (which i'm sure any hardcore swervie fan already knows) are swimming with sharks (last train is played while kevin spacey's charactor is driving around the city in his convertable, continuing the driving theme once again) Also, Duel was the victory song for the final episode of one of whatever Road Rules was on in 97, which by coincedence is the only road rules, or mtv series i've ever really watched.. besides "the state", if any one remembers that.. anyway, i'm getting kinda off topic.. I'm kinda tired.. owell, who cares.. I can't type.. but happy new year, and bring on the Swervie Trivia.. Laters, J.D.

Comment: Happy New Year fellow Swervies!!! Happy new year Steve. Hope you are enjoying San Francisco, I know you are. Please make sure and have a beer for me at the Vesuvio in honor of all the dead Beat poets. I'll let you know when we are getting out that way again. Hey Interloper, yeah, I agree too...that new Bowie record is as good as stuff he did 25 years ago...it's as good as his Ziggy stuff, for real. I listened to it on vinyl at a friend's house and it really was amazing. That newest Elvis Costello is one of the best things he's done in years too. Hey Adam Franklin: please, please, please come play a show in the south...I'm sure me and many other southerners are willing to drive a few hundred miles, but it's hard to get up to Brooklyn to see ya. Werd.

Comment: Interesting stories about Swervie initiation---here's mine. Everyone I've introduced to Swervedriver has liked them--but--it takes time, for even I did not get into Mezcal Head right off the bat. It aged with time and subsequent listens and now it is undoubtedly a masterpiece of an album. And it has nothing to do with taste, like all great art. People who listen to music solely as entertainment can talk of taste, where one taste against another doesn't really make a difference. But anyone who takes the time to listen to something that is not necessarily instantaneously gratifying will understand the true genius behind it; which means the thought, feeling, hard work and virtuous intentions. In a world where most music is being passed off to sell desire and image, it is relatively simple to recognize the inherent beauty in certain styles and genres of music. And when introducing people to Swervedriver, it is usually a good idea to provide a context (i.e. brit-pop as a genre). Try passing a friend My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, Slowdive's Souvlaki, or Ride's Going Blank Again at the same time. They'll listen differently. And as far as Slipknot fans are concerned--this type of music is so full of attitude that it clouds the songs themselves. And I'm speaking from experience--as an ex-metalhead. It would be extremely difficult for a Slipknot fan to understand the understated elegance that is the Swervedriver listening experience because hopefully, the listener abandons his attitude at the door. And one more thing--look at it this way--you don't just all of a sudden get into, and understand the films of Stanley Kubrick, for example. The works of great minds (and works) are difficult to access, but once accessed, provide an intellectual stimulation and pleasure that far surpasses any trivial or fleeting bodily pleasure. The music of Swervedriver spreads like a disease, or rather, like a cure. A cure for the lost soul, a disease much more difficult to perceive and cure compared to countless others. You have to train your ears--the rewards gained from the Swervedriver listening experience do not occur overnight. Take your time...and live a little. Remember what they say....music IS the soundtrack of your life and says a lot about the individual or the conformist in you! Peace and Happy New Year to all!!
