11/06/2007 Swervedriver 2008 Tour
"The Road Is Long
So it looks like Swervedriver will hit the road once more. It all happened quite quickly and we met up in a pub in London last month and figured out what we'd like to do, which at this point is just heading out and playing some shows again.
As far as new recordings are concerned, I already have two albums to record next year (a new 'solo' and The Setting Suns debut) and they take priority. Maybe the Swervies can rustle up a new tune or two but really, there's more than enough going on with that back catalogue already.
I gotta say that something that really sparked my interest in this was hearing the live version of Sandblasted that has been posted for some time at swervedriver.com and subsequently at the MySpace page. I'd just never heard it played like that before. I mean, I guess I was there and everything, but it's got this great kinda country style to it that sounds like it might have only happened one night, and it's stuff like that that keeps the whole thing alive to me... not only in the music but the fact that other folks cared enough to record and post these recordings.
In the meantime this 'Bolts of Melody' tour has been going really good and finally it's reached the point where nobody bitches after the shows about the lack of Swervedriver songs! I guess because they've been leaving completely satiated by the set that culminates with the twelve minute C chord that is Ramonesland. Things are nicely in place to build on with another album next year and there's already a great album taking shape I think..
So I guess I'd better sleep now.. cheers - A"

6/25/2007 - First Bolts of Melody review. ** updated with more reviews **

"It’s truly thrilling to hear Franklin amped up again and belting out urgent guitar anthems like opener Seize the Day and Shining Somewhere. The vocals certainly sound more weathered, and the effects rack has most likely been trimmed down a little from his Swervedriver days, but these two immediate standouts are unmistakably the sound of man enjoying his music."
"Bolts of Melody, Franklin's first proper solo album, more or less begins where we left off, albeit with the volume turned down a little. “Seize the Day” thrashes around like The Posies and Teenage Fanclub never went out of fashion; “Song of Solomon” is a charming tribute to Elliott Smith, and “Sundown” sounds more like the Lemonheads than the Lemonheads do these days.

"I feel the album picks up nicely where Swervedriver left off. It incorporates the many-layered chorus of guitars swirling around the melodies sustained by Adam’s distinct laid-back vocal styles. There is a more 60’s guitar pop feel with Adam wearing influences from garage bands and psychedelia groups."

4/2/2007 - Interpol's Sam + Swervedriver's Adam = Setting Suns
Getting to kick out some jams with your idols is any young musician's dream come true, and for a young musician named Sam Fogarino from a young band called Interpol, that dream recently exploded into reality.
Fogarino met former Swervedriver lead Adam Franklin over dinner a winter ago, and the two must have hit it off, 'cause they done gone and formed a band. "i've been a swervedriver fan from the start, still am," wrote Fogarino on the Setting Suns' newly inaugurated MySpace page. "i would have killed just to bang a can for adam franklin. now, he makes sense of my melodies, and turns our ideas into a beautiful din. i feel lucky and alive.... and a bit sick from my own sap."

2/20/2007 - Bolts of Melody info plus more from Adam himself
"Hi all
As I'm just about about to drive off to Holland for the latest leg of Sophia shows I thought it was time for a general update, just in case you all thought I'd fallen asleep or something.
My new album Bolts of Melody will see the light of day as an Adam Franklin album for the first time. The Toshack Highway moniker seems too unwieldy for a number of reasons - people never remember the name for starters (or pronounce it incorrectly!) and it's just easier for people to remember my own name anyway. Also the album is much more song/guitar driven, and to me Toshack is more this instrumental/keyboardy thing, so actually the Toshack name might re-appear at some point with music more in that original vein, but for the time being AF it is..
The album will feature the recent Syd's Eyes single and Birdsong (Moonshiner Version), which were previously only available as Black Mountain seven inch and Shifty Disco download-only release respectively, as those tracks should be made more widely available.
The cover of Wolf Parade's Shine A Light that was posted at www.myspace.com/toshackhighway will also be on the album due to a certain amount of public demand - the lyric about "waiting for something that'll never arrive" seemed particularly appropriate due to this album taking so long to get released!
The album should get released in the US/North America May/June time and there will be full band dates with the Bolts of Melody band in the US around that time. We're still finalising European release schedules.
In the meantime people can check out my new Setting Suns collaboration with Sam Fogarino from Interpol at www.myspace.com/thesettingsuns. Me and Sam have been knocking out a few ideas in recent months and will continue to do so in between doing our other stuff - Interpol have reached the mixing stage for their new album I believe and Sam will then embark on an endless touring schedule but we'll take that project out on the road at some stage in the future.
People should also check out The Still Out at www.myspace.com/thestillout which is a new band featuring Josh Stoddard who will be playing bass for Bolts of Melody, and Arjun Agerwala who recorded the drums for Syd's Eyes. I've also contributed some guitars and vocals for this project.
And hey, why not also check out Rol Jui at www.myspace.com/roljui featuring Locksley Taylor from Sianspheric and Dean Williams who of course played on/recorded Bolts of Melody. Ley will also be touring Bolts of Melody.
And lastly, Sophia plays Holland and Belgium next week and will be touring Scandinavia and Italy in April/May and is sounding pretty rocking - Will, Jeff and Robin made up the rest of Toshack Highway when we toured the Orange Album in Europe in 2000 and the band has aged like a fine wine! ...well, it's certainly aged... So come and check out the band if we're close by at all and have some More Wine...( www.sophiamusic.net)
cheers
Adam"

1/25/2007 - Bolts of Melody spring release - listen to tracks at the label's myspace
We are extremely proud to announce the first signing to the label! This talented artist is...drum roll please.....Adam Franklin, singer/guitarist/songwriter for UK shoegazer legends Swervedriver!! Adam's new record called "Bolts of Melody" will be released in the spring of '07. A brilliant mix of 60's influenced psychedelic rock, folk, and of course Swervedriver, some have been known to refer to Adam's music as "space-folk". Whatever the term you want to use is fine by us. We just call it amazing. Visit www.adamfranklin.com for more info.

Soundtrack to Nothing by Christy Bush
April 27th – May 27th, 2006
Reception for the artist: Thursday, April 27th, 2006 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Bespoke Gallery is pleased to present Soundtrack to Nothing, a series of
black and white and color photographs by Christy Bush. A reception will
be held on Thursday, April 27th from 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This is Christy
Bush’s first solo exhibit at Bespoke Gallery.
In Soundtrack to Nothing, Christy Bush’s photographs document contemporary
teenage music fans attending rock concerts (Interpol, The Others, Elefant
and The Secret Machines) in various cities across the United States, Europe
and Australia.
The subjects of Bush’s photographs, shot extemporaneously in diverse
concert-venue locations -- lobbies, lavatories, backstage, in the audience
–- are decidedly unabashed and devoid of self-consciousness.
While the photographs were taken during the last two years, they possess
the stark austerity and grace reminiscent of the French New Wave movies
of the early 1960s. The photographs, both alone and in series could be stills
from the making of a coming-of-age movie. Titillated by this evocation,
the photographer generated an imaginary story-line linking the protagonists
of her project and assigning them
fictitious stage names. Some of the teen fans whom Bush encountered appear
only once in her photographs. Others photographed at a number of different
shows assume starring roles.
Bush captures the spirit of these teenage music fans and her photographs
evidence the gamut of raw teen fan emotion - giddiness, vulnerability, boredom,
innocence, fragile sophistication, longing. The viewer is invited to share
their fleeting candor.
The audio track playing in conjunction with Soundtrack to Nothing comprises
a number of songs written for the exhibit by The Last Night (Sam Fog of
Interpol and Dagon James, in collaboration with guest musicians Adam Franklin
of Toshack Highway and Swervedriver, Grasshopper of Mercury Rev, and Michael
Stipe).
Bespoke Gallery Publications is releasing a book to accompany the Soundtrack
to Nothing exhibit which will include the CD produced exclusively for the
show.
Bush lives in New York City and holds a BFA from the University of Georgia
in Athens. She has participated in several exhibits in Georgia and works
as aprofessional photographer in New York City.

Says Adam Franklin, ex of Swervedriver and the main man
behind Toshack: "It's quite a cool thing doing a downloads only release
because the whole thing has such a quick turnaraound. "Dave Newton
Ride's manager (who also runs Shifty Disco) heard the new Toshack Highway
album and suggested putting a track up at Shifty Disco. "I said Why
not, and when Dave said the track he wanted to use was Birdsong it reminded
me that I had intended to record a slowed down solo version of that song.
"Then the idea of expanding this to an EP release sprang up as we had
these versions of Theme From LSD lying around as well.
"But what makes it realy like a 45 release from the 60s is that we're
still finishing off the 'baroque version' of LSD - Ley Taylor and his brother
Mike up in Toronto are putting a few finishing touches to it, piano and
stuff. So we'll finish off the track and it'll be released within the week."

Posted - many new scans of swervedriver memorabilia here
9/29/2004 - Possibly the biggest swervedriver
related news day this millennium...
Adam to appear on a Wire Tribute cd:
"These guys at Words On Music, a label operating out
of Minneapolis contacted me and said they'd love for
me to be on the Wire tribute album they were doing and
that the whole album was gonna be versions of the one
song, Outdoor Miner!
A great song for sure, but a whole album of one song?
So I figured that I should try and do something that
sounds totally different to the original.
So it's an acoustic finger-picking folky-sounding
thing although there is also some pump organ and
electric guitar feedback in there.
We originally tried to recording it on the road
on the
Sophia tour when we were in Bergen and Dublin but it
didn't sound right so I recorded it back in Brooklyn
at Jason Marcucci's studio Excello in the end."
you can preorder for $11 here: http://www.words-on-music.com/news.html
Adam is going on an European tour with Sophia
October/November
"Sophia heads out on the road again around Europe for
a month. This tour's a bigger operation as there's
gonna be a string quartet out with us also.
I've only played with the strings twice, a festival in
Belgium and a radio session in Paris but for some
strange reason the string players are always the ones
who go straight to the back of the bus and start
skinning up and then later on they're all wasted and
shit - they're far more rock'n'roll than they oughtta
be in other words!
There's a Sophia XFM session that we did earlier this
year (without the strings) at the XFM website:
http://www.xfm.co.uk/article.asp?id=22544
The Album Leaf are opening up on most of the dates -
that's this guy Jimmy LaValle from San Diego who used
to be in Black Heart Procession and who's just
released a nice sounding, really chilled out album
recorded in Iceland with Sigur Ros"
New Toshack Highway band recordings:
"We've done these new recordings that sound a lot more
electric and rocky. I'm still not sure if these
recordings should be as Toshack Highway or not,
especially as Jeff Townsin doesn't play drums on them
- there was originally a plan to record with Jeff and
Will Foster who are both also in Sophia as well as
having done those Toshack shows back in 2000.
In the end though we couldn't find a time when
everyone was available and so I went up to Toronto in
August and recorded ten songs with Ley Taylor and Matt
Durrant from Sianspheric and Dean Williams who does
this electronica thing called Quasimojo with Ley.
We spent a couple of days at a studio called Broadcast
Lane in Toronto that is run by this really cool guy
called Lurch and then drove an hour north of the city
to a cottage by a lake for some round-the-clock
recording. It's sounding pretty cool so far, kinda
like psychedelic-midnight-country with occasional
Hendrix and VU flourishes... (well you know, KINDA
Hendrixy - my take on him anyway!) Matt's drumming
really brought out the Velvetsy side.
We may end up adding some recordings we did in
Brooklyn with Ron Lowder playing drums for release.
I'm especially pleased I got to finally lay down this
instrumental tune called "Theme from LSD" which was
something that Steve George, Jeff Townsin and me
came up with during a Sophia soundcheck in Milan
a few years back."
Swervedriver retrospective on Sanctuary:
"Yes, it appears that there will be a Swervedriver
retrospective CD issued sometime in the new year.
Not a lot to report right now other than the fact that
Jimmy has been meeting up with Alan Moulder in
London and going through some of the master reels.
At the moment it looks like Sanctuary are quite into
the idea of it containing unreleased/ rarities as well
as being a kind of Best Of and are looking at issuing
a double CD set so it could be pretty cool."
Great new addition to the mp3 downloads:
All for albums compiled using the best available live bootleg and radio
session recordings. Check it out here.

-- Gig Report: Adam Franklin Live at Fez, NYC
Adam played another incredible show last night at NYC's Fez, which, with
each show Adam plays there, proves to be a great venue to see and hear
live acoustic music. However, characterizing Adam's solo shows as merely "acoustic music" does them a severe injustice. His songs are much more
than typical singer/songwriter performances or unplugged versions of rock
songs. They are skillfully crafted compositions that, at the same time,
are spontaneous and ever evolving. Mixing up his set with Swervedriver
classics, Toshack Highway gems and an eclectic assortment of covers, Adam
keeps his audience listening intensely to every beat. If you have any
chance at all to make one of these upcoming shows, do whatever you can
to get there. You will see and hear something special.

Here's the anonymous tip: "Adam is playing an extra show at Alan Mcghee's
Radio 4 club night at Don
Hill's, 511 Greenwich S (corner of Spring), New York City on Friday
13th July. Take C or E train to Spring, 1 or 9 to Canal St. No cover before

Update
I got a chance to speak with Adam briefly after the show and picked his
brain about the current status of SWD, Toshack Highway and anything else
I could think of. At the present time, Swervedriver is free from any contractual
obligations and Adam said they're currently looking around for a new deal.
Adam will be releasing some four track solo stuff under the moniker Toshack
Highway on SpaceBaby
records. Information about that release will be available here and
the Toshack
Highway site as well. Catapult
Records was rumored to be re-releasing Ejector Seat Reservation and
99th Dream, but I've yet to confirm this with them. Stay tuned for more
details. 07/03/2001
-- Adam's Solo Acoustic Tour a Success.
It was a small, but East Coast-heavy tour that graced many old friends'
and new fans' ears with timeless Swervedriver classics, beautiful renditions
of covers and a few new tunes. Culminating with last nights performance
at Fez in New York, Adam again reminded us why his & Swervedriver's
music is so enduring. To see this man perform live -- to be in the same
room with such intense energy -- is awe inspiring. If you managed to miss
these shows you should hang your head and cry. No distance was too great
to travel to hear one of the great sogwriters of our time.
