18/5/2017 New Album

"We're working on a new Swervedriver album." says Adam Franklin in a recent interview for - "Dreams can come true twice." is what I say.

23/3/2017 Adam Franklin Covers Motörhead and David Bowie for Record Store Day 7” Single Release this April

Swervedriver frontman Adam Franklin is set to release versions of ‘Iron Horse/Born to Lose’ by Motörhead and David Bowie’s ‘Thursday’s Child’ as a double A-side 7” single, on 22nd April 2017, via Club AC30 in celebration of this year’s Record Store Day.

Sketches of the two songs had been lurking on Franklin’s laptop for a while, but when Lemmy and Bowie died within two weeks of each other over a year ago, he decided to finish them off in one recording session. 'Iron Horse/Born To Lose', a very early Motörhead song, first appeared in 1977 and Bowie's 'Thursday's Child' was released much later as a single in 1999. While very different, these songs both have a certain vulnerability, exposed further by Franklin’s own interpretations.

There will be vinyl and download versions available at after April 22nd.

"Nineties UK shoegaze legends SWERVEDRIVER return to NZ with old friends FUR PATROL

FUR PATROL will open this doubleheader whilst celebrating their 20th anniversary.

SWERVEDRIVER inhabit a funny spot within the pantheon of classic shoegazer bands. They were always out of step with their 90s Creation-era peers, most of whom appeared content to disappear behind a veil of tastefully shimmering feedback and lyrical obtuseness. Swervedriver, on the other hand, were interested in ripping. Their guitars may have fed back through the requisite number of effects pedals, and classic Swervedriver t-shirts actually featured a connected bank of effects pedals rather than the bandmembers, but rather than shrink into the feedback, Swervedriver married their guitar haze with nods to poppy psychedelia, American film noir, and songs about fast cars

FUR PATROL remain Julia Deans vocals and guitar , Andrew Bain on bass, and Simon Braxton on drums Its been 20 years since Julia got them together to work on some demo material. ANd within 4 years they had a classic NZ number one with Lydia. ANDREW BAIN: "It's been a few years, I hope Simon can remember how to count to 4, although some of our songs do go up to 600 so this could get interesting fast."

11/17/2015 Paris postponed

"We are very sorry to say that our show in Paris on Saturday - which we really wanted to play in defiance of the deluded, murdering shitheads - has been postponed. Alias, Fleche d'Or and Bataclan are the same team and crew and everybody there is in great shock and distress, as well as the Parisienne audiences and people deeply impacted and so in order to allow our brothers and sisters in the French capital time to rest and grieve and heal, we have spoken with the promoter and decided that we shall reschedule for the earliest possible date. 11/27/2014 Bolts of Melody gets the vinyl re-issue treatment Dec 2nd!

Adam Franklin is a name known to many as the singer, guitarist and main songwriter in Swervedriver, who from 1990 onwards bought you timeless and classic tunes like Son of Mustang Ford, Last Train to Satansville, Duel, Rave Down, Never Lose that Feeling, The Birds.. the list goes on and on. In many ways they would, along with label-mates on the forward-thinking and adventurous Creation label, come to embody a new British psych/shoegaze/rock/pop genre.

Exhausted and disillusioned with everything at the end of an Australian tour in late 1998 however, they dissolved, went home to the UK and moved out of their studio space for an extended hiatus. Adam quickly assembled another musical project in the form of Toshack Highway, relocated to the US and started releasing albums and EPs in 2000. Constantly shifting genres and rearranging styles, his new projects were at first more electronic after he abandoned the standard electric guitar/effects pedals/amps he'd been famous for.

Recording for a second full length album started as early as 2004 but there was no rush to release it and consequently the album, still unnamed, took three years to finish. Returning somewhat to the electric guitar and effects pedals band format, this was clearly not a Toshack Highway album and since Adam had been playing shows as "Adam Franklin", by the time the album was released in 2007 the name of the artist on the front was Adam Franklin and the record was called Bolts of Melody - later to also become his band's name as well as the name of a song on the second AF album.

Bolts of Melody came out at the height of digital releases when vinyl was considered archaic and out of date and so the record was never mastered for or pressed onto that beautiful black (or coloured) substance that so richly reproduces sound with all its nuances and depth. And so, for the first time, here it is in its full analogue glory.

Out January 2015. Presale on limited edition 180 gram splatter version from Dec 2nd.

8/11/2014 All Happening Now, 36 songs project, Disc 2 of 3 just came out.

Our 3 week odyssey is complete.  Go get the last installment of this amazing project.  36 songs directly for the fans.  Everything is up on Bandcamp and iTunes so take your pick.

Now for some more news.  Take a look a this quote from Adam and see if you can catch the two news bombs:

"Thanks everyone for being involved in this - I have to say I'm quite glad to have it all finished and out there finally. This was all in part promotion of the Black Horses album of course and there is a White Horses album in the making which is some way off yet but that could be a time to embark upon a similar project, perhaps."

That's right, a new release is twinkling in Adam's eye and it is possible the project will repeat.  Yum.

To those of us with a foot still in the physical media past it seems quite likely that all three of these All Happening Now issues will make it to physical release so I'll keep you posted on that as I get info. There will shortly be some news about a vinyl reissue for later in the year I am told.

Finally Adam returns to work on the new Swervedriver album.  Vocals were being recorded last week and it has now entered the mixing stage.

Feel lucky because you are lucky.

8/11/2014 All Happening Now, 36 songs project, Disc 2 of 3 just came out.
Get it on bandcamp or iTunes.

8/4/2014 All Happening Now, 36 songs project, Disc 1 of 3 available now for download, 2 and 3 in the next 2 weeks

Fans, this is what we have been waiting for.  A late summer's dream come true.  Grab the first disc at the link below.

I'll let Adam's Band Camp page describe it:
All Happening Now is 36 songs, requested by 31 people and recorded in 30 days by Adam Franklin in July 2013 as part of an exclusive recordings project.

Mostly from his back catalogue - Swervedriver, Toshack Highway, Magnetic Morning and Bolts of Melody and solo tunes - there were also three random requests from the year 1967 as a "wildcard" option which he had to honour: luckily he loved the Hendrix tune and approved of the Buffalo Springfield and Frankie Valli requests - "I managed to dodge the Engelbert Humperdink bullet, although our guitar tech Duncan cannily made me record 1967's 'The Laughing Gnome' for him in exchange for fixing a wah wah pedal. This track will sadly remain in the vaults."

So after requests to make the whole set available, it finally is. The 31 original benefactors receive the whole set for free (apart from Duncan) and the rest of you can either listen to it endlessly on your computers via Bandcamp or purchase it from there and iTunes - but really, you want to buy it of course. (The cover versions are free.) The 36 tracks break down into three sets of 12 songs so disc one is available here now and discs two and three will be available from August 11th and August 18th respectively.

Muses Franklin: "The title 'All Happening Now' was suggested by Samuel Lapalme-Remis and it really was all happening last July - I didn't have too long to spend on each number and so the recordings had to be pretty spontaneous. I have allowed myself the luxury of re-mixing and retouching the tracks here and there in the interim, meaning that a certain number of the original recordings people received remain absolutely exclusive. There has been no additional recording however, just some drum tracks re-programmed and things nudged around"

Thanks to Ben Poore, Iain Blatherwick, Michael Faust, Meredith Puljung, Samuel Lapalme-Remis, Nick Ilott, Karl MacRae, Anna Smolinska, Anthony Seeley, Stephen Cross, Marie Cronin, Trevor Ydreos, Andy Barksdale, Fahmi Hosain, Geoff Calhoun, Peter Horvath, Jason Newberry, Whitney Profitt, Jeff Birgbauer, Colin Cherot, Brad Knox, Christian Santos, David Weislogel, Brandon Dudley, Rob Hobson, Greg Witt, Jim McDermott, Julien Hottinger, Daniel Johnson, Tom Kennedy, Ken Scott and Brad Sears.

2/21/2014 Update on 36 Songs project Adam just emailed the group with an update about the 36 songs project. In short things are progressing and he needs help figuring out a name. Read the full update here.

2/19/2014 Raise Album Show in London April 4th

From Adam's facebook

Swervedriver will be performing their 1991 debut album Raise from needle-down to run-off groove for the first time ever in London, on April 4th at The Garage at Highbury Corner followed by a second set of new tunes/other classics. Pre-show drinks across the way at the Hen & Chickens, I expect. It'd be great to see you there - yes, you! (I thought that said "a second set of show tunes" for a second and was slightly worried)

Here's hoping for more news from Adam soon. This is our year fellow swervies.

12/9/2013 The 9th is here. Check out the video and go get your Deep Wound now.

12/4/2013 Deep Wound single Dec 9th and new album 2014

Amongst an endless parade of edgeless acts and accolade ceremonies, bands like Swervedriver are needed more than ever, with music that aims straight for the heart.

So here's the news - on December 9th Swervedriver's first new recorded material in more than fifteen years will be available to download. Swervedriver have completed several successful US, Australian and European tours since reforming in 2008, but with the addition of NYC drummer Mikey Jones in 2012, a shift in gear spurred a new creative period for the band.

Aired publicly for the first time last year with the band's performance on the Jimmy Fallon TV Show, Deep Wound is the first pup from that litter to open its eyes - and it's classic Swervedriver! The B-side re-working Dub Wound goes for the kind of driving Krautrock vibe hinted at on Adam Franklin solo releases (and is co-mixed by Ride's Mark Gardener who also provides backing vocals on the A-side).

A full length Swervedriver album is planned for 2014 but in the meantime, give your old copy of Mezcal Head a break and treat your ears to some new Swervy material!

Get yer Swerve on! Download from December 9th on Itunes, Bandcamp, Amazon and Google Play.

10/23/2013 35 songs by request band camp release is going to happen
Adam just sent an email to all in the 35 song custom recording group. Our hope of these songs coming out as a digital release seems to be becoming real. In his words:

There has been some discussion on this and it's still a little ways off but I would say that this would most likely end up being a simple download release and therefore Bandcamp would probably be the easiest, most visible way of getting it out there.

I was thinking of following the line that some of you suggested whereby you each say a few words about why you chose the song you chose. Of course you don't have to opt in on this if you don't wish to. I'd like for everyone's names to be featured in the credits in relation to the song chosen if possible though if that were agreeable.

9/23/2013 Asha video debuts on Magnet

8/20/2013 It's happening !

From Tym Guitars:

I am VERY (VERY) happy to announce that Tym records is releasing the first new Swervedriver recording in 15 years recorded in July exclusively for Tym records, on vinyl through my label to coincide with their Australian tour in September. Available worldwide exclusively through Tym records.

Tym's Records is proud to present the first vinyl offering of new material from Swervedriver for 15 years. A limited edition seven inch single, 'Deep Wound' is a classic three minute slice of driving Swerve-rock featuring backing vocals from Ride's Mark Gardener. 'Dub Wound' on the b-side is the same song played with the reels reversed and remixed with a motorik beat to create a spacey, dubby 'krautrock' version.
The seven inch will be available for purchase from the band's merch stall on their upcoming Australian tour where they will be performing 1991 debut album Raise in its entirety and also as pre-release from Tym records at from August 21st in ULTRA limited edition PURPLE vinyl ONLY available on presale. There will also be limited edition RED vinyl version available and a YELLOW vinyl version on merch stands on the tour. All will be available exclusively through Tym records from September 26th until sold out. Adam Franklin.

OMG a fan's dream come true. As I understand it you get the new album Black Horses and any song from Adam's back catalog recorded specially for you. Get on this now.

Ahead of the release of the new album Black Horses on July 16th we have an amazing special offer - 30 personally signed CD copies in digipaks are available for purchase here.

HERE'S THE TWIST THOUGH: For just 25 English pounds (plus p&p)*, not only do you receive a physical copy of this wonderful-sounding album in tastefully-packaged, digipak artefact form via your friendly postman, but ALSO you will receive via email, an exclusive wav or mp3 file of Adam playing a new version of a song OF YOUR CHOICE from his back catalogue, recorded SPECIALLY FOR YOU to listen to at your leisure and OWN exclusively forever!

Yes, own! Just think.. If you never, ever upload it to the internet it's yours and yours alone, forever!! You can tantalise dinner party guests with snippets of it before placing your iPod back down your pants for safe keeping. Or imagine subtly slipping it into the playlist on a road-trip -you'll be the envy of all your friends! Plus you can barter with them when they want you to play it again - a bottle of beer here, getting to ride shotgun for the next 50 miles there.. Frankly, your social standing is gonna go up overnight.**

Each recording will be lovingly prepared and executed - no lazy cast-offs - plus Adam will even take onboard stylistic recommendations (although to be honest he'll probably just do it in whichever style feels right at the time).

But which song would you choose? A slowed-down, brooding psychedelic rendition of Laze It Up JUST FOR YOU? Ramonesland re-imagined as a Ramones song FOR YOUR MUM? Or perhaps even a ridiculously hardcore interpretation of Rave Down FOR YOUR LITTLE BROTHER!

All you have to do upon purchasing is send a message with the name of the song you wish to OWN, your email address and your mailing address plus please state wav or mp3 preference. Album download will be immediate, CDs and exclusive song allow for a week.

*The price of this offer is set at £25 and post and packing is £3.50 so as this Bandcamp account is set up in US dollars, full inclusive price is set at $42.

**What you do with your exclusive track is up to you of course.

(For an extra £25 Adam will cover any song you choose, as long as it's from the year 1967 - FOR YOUR DAD! probably).

Further enquiries feel free to email:

4/12/2012 Forum question answered, a thanks and hope for the future:
There are still copies of the cd of Everyday, Rock'n'Roll Is saving My Life Vol 2 though people will have to wait til I'm back in the UK to mail out. If people wanna order it the address is toshack at and I don't recall what we were selling them for before but I guess it's $5 plus $2 shipping these days. VUland is certainly a winner and has the backwards guitar sounds from Cars Converge On Paris that we used on the recent dates.
Speaking of which, thanks to everyone who came out and supported us on these dates! It was one of the most enjoyable runs we've had for a while and has got everyone excited about further stuff. We'll keep y'all posted! A

3/28/2012 The tour begins - check out the two performances on Jimmy Fallon. Son of Mustang Ford and a new one Deep Wound

3/8/2012 News bomb - Swervedriver conquering all media formats

Swervedriver are revving up for a brief run of US shows in March and April kicking off with an appearance on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show on March 26th and have been working on new material for probable release later in the year.

One song called Deep Wound has three different versions, the original being described as a Raw Power/Revolver hybrid which, with the tape turned backwards, turns into a Neu/krautrock-sounding tune and which has also been worked into a half-time, slower-sounding psychedelic version.

Another new song Good Times Are So Hard To Follow is a band re-working of a tune that singer Adam Franklin has written as the title song for a new movie called California Solo starring Robert Carlyle and which is sung in the film by the actor.

Opening on the tour is New York's Heaven featuring Mikey Jones, drummer in Adam Franklin's 'solo' band Bolts of Melody. Jones will however be sitting in on drums for the Swervies as he did last year - regular Swerve drummer Graham Bonnar was not available last time and therefore was not registered on the work visas for this time.

A live Swervedriver DVD of a show shot in Sydney last year will be available exclusively at all shows as well as two Adam Franklin vinyl singles (one featuring Wolf Parade and Clientele cover versions and available here: and the other an Adam Franklin & Bolts of Melody/Heaven split seven inch from Goodnight Records featuring a new recording of I Want You Right Now (Kosmische Version). A video is in production for this tune starring actress Jessica Paré from TV show Mad Men).

2/3/2012 Graham's reunion with his old band from Edinburgh 'The Shattered Family'

An interesting show at the Voodoo Rooms, Saturday 3rd March from 8pm. Edinburgh. Billed as 'The Family Gathering' it headlines Edinburgh's cult, 80's, post-punk, psychedelic popsters 'The Shattered Family' re-united for an historic one-off performance. Drummer, Graham Bonnar, (Brian Jonestown Massacre/Swervedriver), comes home to join Lightnin' Conductor Mole (aka 'The Last Dance Kid'), Mik Travis, Dr. Kimberley Sands and Third Bass for an evening of music, variety and togetherness. With their reputation for live spectacle it promises to be a stimulating event for young and less young alike.

Guests include Phil Zimmerman (London), off-beat bluesician Homesick Aldo (Overseas) and singer-songwriter Nev Hawkins (Liverpool). Tickets £5 on the door.

Mick Travis appears courtesy of 'Lovedust', a 3 year collaborative music project featuring Rick Maymi (Brian Jonestown Massacre/Wild Swans/Steve Kilby) which includes some modern re-workings of Shattered Family songs amongst new compositions and covers a broad sweep of musical styles and influences. Debut album and live shows to be announced.

10/28/2010 Anyone Can Play Guitar - The Oxford Music Scene Documentary

This documentary is really happening:

My name's Jon and I'm in the final stages of making a film about the Oxford music scene. Swervedriver (and the band that spawned them - Shake Appeal) are heavily featured with completely unseen footage and photos and new interviews with Adam and Jimmy. It's a completely indie film that I've been making for two and a half years now and if it's going to stand a chance of being seen, I need to spread the word on a grass roots level.

You can support in via the facebook group or you can crowd fund the release and get a
DVD + more out of it here.

9/21/2009 More Good News - New Adam Franklin Album Recorded + UK Swervedriver dates updated + Sophia Dates + Forum Questions Answered

"Adam and Bolts of Melody have recorded a new as yet untitled album, tentatively set for release next Spring.

Mikey Jones who drummed on the recent tour played drums and nailed twelve songs in a day and a half at Stratosphere studio in New York City with sometime Bolt of Melody Matt Sumrow playing bass and keyboards in the broken absence of Josh Stoddard. Matt has previously played keyboards with Bolts in the studio but never live and plays guitar with Dean & Britta and handles piano duties with Ambulance Ltd. Arjun Agerwala recorded the session and all of these dudes play in The Still Out also.

Having just come off the road and rocked up the Spent Bullets tracks there was indeed a rockier spontaneity to the recordings - in fact after jamming the songs out in a rehearsal room situated on Franklin St in Brooklyn, Adam, Mikey and Matt were itching to do an impromptu show as a three-piece somewhere in the city but couldn't sort it out in time. Instead the band and Arjun drove up to Toronto where Adam and Locksley laid down guitars and vocals and everyone had a couple of drinks.

After adding a few finishing touches at Mark Gardener's studio in Oxford, Adam aims to mix the album in Cardiff with Charlie Francis sometime after the end of Sophia's European tour and before Swervedriver's UK dates."

Here are the UK dates all together in one place:

11.26.09 O2 Academy, Oxford
11.27.09 ICA, London

Back to the good news now. A Soundworld of Rain just got released on iTunes. From the myspace: "Originally broadcast December 2007 and titled A Soundworld of Rain this features Adam with pedal steel maestro and sometime Bolt of Melody Gerald Menke, playing measured and reverb-drenched versions of Bolts of Melody songs with a couple of Swervedriver nuggets in there also." I tuned in for the broadcast and I can't wait to get my hands on a good copy of this. Enjoy.

2/28/2009 Spent Bullets + New Site + New Tour

Spent Bullets is only 1 month away.  It comes out March 31st and promises to be very strong.

Adam's cyber team has put up a new site at / that deserves to be visited.  It is a guide to everything Adam has done.  You can stream a track from each of his releases dating back to the pre Swervedriver Shake Appeal days.

There is talk of a tour supporting Australia's The Church.  Details are few but June 10th attracts the most winks and nods so far.

Spent Bullets is going to get its own tour as well so I'll post those dates on that when I get them.

1/30/2009 One review of Spent Bullets and one of the US Swervedriver remasters

"As the last notes of ‘Teardrops’ fade into ‘Bolts of Melody’, and your head starts to lull in a slow Hendrix - Electric Ladyland approval at another mind-blower of a song… you can take solace in the fact that you’re not even a quarter of the way into an album that will surely go down on record as some of Franklin’s finest material."

"Nearly eighteen years have passed since Raise's 1991 release but the glorious opener Sci-Flyer still sounds positively thrilling today."

1/30/2009 Swervedriver ringtones? Have at them.

9/26/2008 Three reviews of the London show just came in.

And they've still got that sound. If there is a shoegazing chord - and rest assured there is: an open-ended, half-lazy, half-blissed out clang of a chord fed through a Jodrell Bank of effects pedals - then Swervedriver always knew how to add a malevolent edge to it. And there it is, shot right through the bit in "Sandblasted" when they crank it down a gear and unleash a torrent of magnificent, snarling noise.

Their set is something of an anthology as early singles like 'Sandblasted' rub shoulders impeccably with later material such as '99th Dream'. Nevertheless, it's the songs they dig out from 1993's 'Mezcal Head' era that seem to go down most vigorously with tonight's audience. 'Duel' is breathtaking, 'Blowin' Cool' incisive and 'Duress' a more than rightful claim to being one of the prototypes of this decade's post-rock phenomenon.

‘Duel’ really unleashes the crowd, and as the set progresses to the classic ‘Rave Down’, met with rapturous applause and a mini mosh-pit, fusing into ‘Son Of A Mustang Ford’, Swervedriver’s return has been just as good as they were in their early days, the songs are still strong, still resonant, and the world still wants to see them play

9/24/2008 Full transcript of Adam's TapeOp interview.

Daniel Johnson kindly sent in the full transcript of the interview he did with Adam for the respected recording magazine Tape Op. In his words:

"More importantly though, the editor gave me permission to let you guys have the full, uncut piece and that puppy has got TONS of interesting swervedriver stories and info that I've never read anywhere else. To give you an idea, I interviewed him for a cumulative 6 hours and so that is a transcript of most of that. I was asked to wait a month or so before turning that over to you, so look for it soon."

Here it is in its 21 page word doc entirety. We all owe Daniel and Adam thanks for this.

Following their recent reunion and a very successful US tour earlier this year, Swervedriver are back after 10 years away.

One of the finest bands to emerge from the so-called ‘shoegaze’ scene in the1990s, Swervedriver signed to Creation Records with whom they released three albums: Raise (1991), Mezcal Head (1993) and Ejector Seat Reservation (1995). All three albums have been re-mastered for the first time here and are released as deluxe digi-paks, each one extended with 4 rare bonus tracks and brand new retrospective liner notes by the band.

7/9/2008 Swervedriver recorded something on tour - Developing -

I have it from a reliable source that sometime during the US tour Adam, Steve and Jimmy 'stepped into a studio' and recorded something during the US tour. Forum discussion here.
* boom * I just got some more details:
Swervedriver were invited over to the Dandy Warhols' Odditorium studio space in Portland to take part in a project they have going on called Breathe Easy.

They basically have been grabbing bands that come through town to hang out and record at their studio. Other bands and artists then come in and build up the same tunes, as well as starting up completely new ones. So we heard J Mascis playing on a track with the Black Angels, and then Sune from the Raveonettes appears on a track with the Kooks etc etc.

They have a camera crew on hand and the idea is to either get it commissioned as a TV show or do a MySpace/YouTube thing with the ultimate aim of raising money for the 3 Rivers Land Conservancy which is a conservation trust in Oregon.

So myself, Jimmy and Steve headed on over there the day after our Portland show. A totally amazing space kinda based on Warhol's Factory I guess, with a control room, kitchens, offices and side-rooms all with cool art and books and instruments dotted about, and a live room the size of a basketball court with a full stage set-up and tons more gear and artefacts everywhere.

The Dandys served us cups of tea and beer and said they had 2 or 3 backing tracks they wanted us to hear and played us the first tune which had cool bass and drums, some squiggly keys and a girl singing on top. We immediately thought it sounded groovy enough so me and Jim put electric guitars on top and Steve rocked an acoustic.

Then we recorded a couple of improvised pieces with Elliott, the Dandys' engineer behind the kit. Turns out Elliott is a great drummer and a big Swervie fan so he was pretty happy to be playing in the band.

We played the Love The Way It Starts/Hate The Way It Ends two chord jam and then played an extended breakdown of the very end of Kill The Superheroes. At the end we laid some reverse analog keys on top of the whole thing and it sounded supercool.

Funny thing is we asked who the rhythm section was on the first thing we played on, and it turns out it's the Bravery. so there is now a track in existence that has the Bravery's rhythm section with Swervedriver's guitars on top!

11/06/2007 Swervedriver 2008 Tour
"The Road Is Long

So it looks like Swervedriver will hit the road once more. It all happened quite quickly and we met up in a pub in London last month and figured out what we'd like to do, which at this point is just heading out and playing some shows again.

As far as new recordings are concerned, I already have two albums to record next year (a new 'solo' and The Setting Suns debut) and they take priority. Maybe the Swervies can rustle up a new tune or two but really, there's more than enough going on with that back catalogue already.

I gotta say that something that really sparked my interest in this was hearing the live version of Sandblasted that has been posted for some time at and subsequently at the MySpace page. I'd just never heard it played like that before. I mean, I guess I was there and everything, but it's got this great kinda country style to it that sounds like it might have only happened one night, and it's stuff like that that keeps the whole thing alive to me... not only in the music but the fact that other folks cared enough to record and post these recordings.

In the meantime this 'Bolts of Melody' tour has been going really good and finally it's reached the point where nobody bitches after the shows about the lack of Swervedriver songs! I guess because they've been leaving completely satiated by the set that culminates with the twelve minute C chord that is Ramonesland. Things are nicely in place to build on with another album next year and there's already a great album taking shape I think..

So I guess I'd better sleep now.. cheers - A

6/25/2007 - First Bolts of Melody review. ** updated with more reviews **

"It’s truly thrilling to hear Franklin amped up again and belting out urgent guitar anthems like opener Seize the Day and Shining Somewhere. The vocals certainly sound more weathered, and the effects rack has most likely been trimmed down a little from his Swervedriver days, but these two immediate standouts are unmistakably the sound of man enjoying his music."

"Bolts of Melody, Franklin's first proper solo album, more or less begins where we left off, albeit with the volume turned down a little. “Seize the Day” thrashes around like The Posies and Teenage Fanclub never went out of fashion; “Song of Solomon” is a charming tribute to Elliott Smith, and “Sundown” sounds more like the Lemonheads than the Lemonheads do these days.

"I feel the album picks up nicely where Swervedriver left off. It incorporates the many-layered chorus of guitars swirling around the melodies sustained by Adam’s distinct laid-back vocal styles. There is a more 60’s guitar pop feel with Adam wearing influences from garage bands and psychedelia groups."

6/5/2007 - Bolts of Melody release information + 1 Adam Franklin show in Toronto. *** corrected **

4/2/2007 - Interpol's Sam + Swervedriver's Adam = Setting Suns

Getting to kick out some jams with your idols is any young musician's dream come true, and for a young musician named Sam Fogarino from a young band called Interpol, that dream recently exploded into reality.

Fogarino met former Swervedriver lead Adam Franklin over dinner a winter ago, and the two must have hit it off, 'cause they done gone and formed a band. "i've been a swervedriver fan from the start, still am," wrote Fogarino on the Setting Suns' newly inaugurated MySpace page. "i would have killed just to bang a can for adam franklin. now, he makes sense of my melodies, and turns our ideas into a beautiful din. i feel lucky and alive.... and a bit sick from my own sap."

2/20/2007 - Bolts of Melody info plus more from Adam himself

"Hi all

As I'm just about about to drive off to Holland for the latest leg of Sophia shows I thought it was time for a general update, just in case you all thought I'd fallen asleep or something.

My new album Bolts of Melody will see the light of day as an Adam Franklin album for the first time. The Toshack Highway moniker seems too unwieldy for a number of reasons - people never remember the name for starters (or pronounce it incorrectly!) and it's just easier for people to remember my own name anyway. Also the album is much more song/guitar driven, and to me Toshack is more this instrumental/keyboardy thing, so actually the Toshack name might re-appear at some point with music more in that original vein, but for the time being AF it is..

The album will feature the recent Syd's Eyes single and Birdsong (Moonshiner Version), which were previously only available as Black Mountain seven inch and Shifty Disco download-only release respectively, as those tracks should be made more widely available.

The cover of Wolf Parade's Shine A Light that was posted at will also be on the album due to a certain amount of public demand - the lyric about "waiting for something that'll never arrive" seemed particularly appropriate due to this album taking so long to get released!

The album should get released in the US/North America May/June time and there will be full band dates with the Bolts of Melody band in the US around that time. We're still finalising European release schedules.

In the meantime people can check out my new Setting Suns collaboration with Sam Fogarino from Interpol at Me and Sam have been knocking out a few ideas in recent months and will continue to do so in between doing our other stuff - Interpol have reached the mixing stage for their new album I believe and Sam will then embark on an endless touring schedule but we'll take that project out on the road at some stage in the future.

People should also check out The Still Out at which is a new band featuring Josh Stoddard who will be playing bass for Bolts of Melody, and Arjun Agerwala who recorded the drums for Syd's Eyes. I've also contributed some guitars and vocals for this project.

And hey, why not also check out Rol Jui at featuring Locksley Taylor from Sianspheric and Dean Williams who of course played on/recorded Bolts of Melody. Ley will also be touring Bolts of Melody.

And lastly, Sophia plays Holland and Belgium next week and will be touring Scandinavia and Italy in April/May and is sounding pretty rocking - Will, Jeff and Robin made up the rest of Toshack Highway when we toured the Orange Album in Europe in 2000 and the band has aged like a fine wine! ...well, it's certainly aged... So come and check out the band if we're close by at all and have some More Wine...(

1/25/2007 - Bolts of Melody spring release - listen to tracks at the label's myspace
We are extremely proud to announce the first signing to the label! This talented artist is...drum roll please.....Adam Franklin, singer/guitarist/songwriter for UK shoegazer legends Swervedriver!! Adam's new record called "Bolts of Melody" will be released in the spring of '07. A brilliant mix of 60's influenced psychedelic rock, folk, and of course Swervedriver, some have been known to refer to Adam's music as "space-folk". Whatever the term you want to use is fine by us. We just call it amazing. Visit for more info.

Soundtrack to Nothing by Christy Bush

April 27th – May 27th, 2006

Reception for the artist: Thursday, April 27th, 2006 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Bespoke Gallery is pleased to present Soundtrack to Nothing, a series of black and white and color photographs by Christy Bush. A reception will be held on Thursday, April 27th from 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This is Christy Bush’s first solo exhibit at Bespoke Gallery.

In Soundtrack to Nothing, Christy Bush’s photographs document contemporary teenage music fans attending rock concerts (Interpol, The Others, Elefant and The Secret Machines) in various cities across the United States, Europe and Australia.

The subjects of Bush’s photographs, shot extemporaneously in diverse concert-venue locations -- lobbies, lavatories, backstage, in the audience –- are decidedly unabashed and devoid of self-consciousness.

While the photographs were taken during the last two years, they possess the stark austerity and grace reminiscent of the French New Wave movies of the early 1960s. The photographs, both alone and in series could be stills from the making of a coming-of-age movie. Titillated by this evocation, the photographer generated an imaginary story-line linking the protagonists of her project and assigning them
fictitious stage names. Some of the teen fans whom Bush encountered appear only once in her photographs. Others photographed at a number of different shows assume starring roles.

Bush captures the spirit of these teenage music fans and her photographs evidence the gamut of raw teen fan emotion - giddiness, vulnerability, boredom, innocence, fragile sophistication, longing. The viewer is invited to share their fleeting candor.

The audio track playing in conjunction with Soundtrack to Nothing comprises a number of songs written for the exhibit by The Last Night (Sam Fog of Interpol and Dagon James, in collaboration with guest musicians Adam Franklin of Toshack Highway and Swervedriver, Grasshopper of Mercury Rev, and Michael Stipe).

Bespoke Gallery Publications is releasing a book to accompany the Soundtrack to Nothing exhibit which will include the CD produced exclusively for the show.

Bush lives in New York City and holds a BFA from the University of Georgia in Athens. She has participated in several exhibits in Georgia and works as aprofessional photographer in New York City.

toshack highway - birdsong ep out friday

This Friday sees Toshack HIghway teaming up with Oxford based label Shifty Disco to release a downloadable MP3 EP called Birdsong EP with two tracks being available for 99p this coming Friday 10th Feb and two more plus downloadable artwork for another 99p next Friday Feb 17th.

The Shifty Disco Download Singles Club pumps out weekly releases each and every Friday throughout the year, a 12-month subscription comes in at only £12.

Says Adam Franklin, ex of Swervedriver and the main man behind Toshack: "It's quite a cool thing doing a downloads only release because the whole thing has such a quick turnaraound. "Dave Newton Ride's manager (who also runs Shifty Disco) heard the new Toshack Highway album and suggested putting a track up at Shifty Disco. "I said Why not, and when Dave said the track he wanted to use was Birdsong it reminded me that I had intended to record a slowed down solo version of that song.
"Then the idea of expanding this to an EP release sprang up as we had these versions of Theme From LSD lying around as well.
"But what makes it realy like a 45 release from the 60s is that we're still finishing off the 'baroque version' of LSD - Ley Taylor and his brother Mike up in Toronto are putting a few finishing touches to it, piano and stuff. So we'll finish off the track and it'll be released within the week."

9/29/2004 - Possibly the biggest swervedriver related news day this millennium...

Adam to appear on a Wire Tribute cd:
"These guys at Words On Music, a label operating out
of Minneapolis contacted me and said they'd love for
me to be on the Wire tribute album they were doing and
that the whole album was gonna be versions of the one
song, Outdoor Miner!

A great song for sure, but a whole album of one song?
So I figured that I should try and do something that
sounds totally different to the original.

So it's an acoustic finger-picking folky-sounding
thing although there is also some pump organ and
electric guitar feedback in there.

We originally tried to recording it on the road on the
Sophia tour when we were in Bergen and Dublin but it
didn't sound right so I recorded it back in Brooklyn
at Jason Marcucci's studio Excello in the end."

you can preorder for $11 here:

Adam is going on an European tour with Sophia October/November
"Sophia heads out on the road again around Europe for
a month. This tour's a bigger operation as there's
gonna be a string quartet out with us also.

I've only played with the strings twice, a festival in
Belgium and a radio session in Paris but for some
strange reason the string players are always the ones
who go straight to the back of the bus and start
skinning up and then later on they're all wasted and
shit - they're far more rock'n'roll than they oughtta
be in other words!

There's a Sophia XFM session that we did earlier this
year (without the strings) at the XFM website:

The Album Leaf are opening up on most of the dates -
that's this guy Jimmy LaValle from San Diego who used
to be in Black Heart Procession and who's just
released a nice sounding, really chilled out album
recorded in Iceland with Sigur Ros"

New Toshack Highway band recordings:
"We've done these new recordings that sound a lot more
electric and rocky. I'm still not sure if these
recordings should be as Toshack Highway or not,
especially as Jeff Townsin doesn't play drums on them
- there was originally a plan to record with Jeff and
Will Foster who are both also in Sophia as well as
having done those Toshack shows back in 2000.

In the end though we couldn't find a time when
everyone was available and so I went up to Toronto in
August and recorded ten songs with Ley Taylor and Matt
Durrant from Sianspheric and Dean Williams who does
this electronica thing called Quasimojo with Ley.

We spent a couple of days at a studio called Broadcast
Lane in Toronto that is run by this really cool guy
called Lurch and then drove an hour north of the city
to a cottage by a lake for some round-the-clock
recording. It's sounding pretty cool so far, kinda
like psychedelic-midnight-country with occasional
Hendrix and VU flourishes... (well you know, KINDA
Hendrixy - my take on him anyway!) Matt's drumming
really brought out the Velvetsy side.

We may end up adding some recordings we did in
Brooklyn with Ron Lowder playing drums for release.
I'm especially pleased I got to finally lay down this
instrumental tune called "Theme from LSD" which was
something that Steve George, Jeff Townsin and me
came up with during a Sophia soundcheck in Milan
a few years back."

Swervedriver retrospective on Sanctuary:
"Yes, it appears that there will be a Swervedriver
retrospective CD issued sometime in the new year.
Not a lot to report right now other than the fact that
Jimmy has been meeting up with Alan Moulder in
London and going through some of the master reels.

At the moment it looks like Sanctuary are quite into
the idea of it containing unreleased/ rarities as well
as being a kind of Best Of and are looking at issuing
a double CD set so it could be pretty cool."

Great new addition to the mp3 downloads:

11/06/2001 -- Gig Report: Adam Franklin Live at Fez, NYC

Adam played another incredible show last night at NYC's Fez, which, with each show Adam plays there, proves to be a great venue to see and hear live acoustic music. However, characterizing Adam's solo shows as merely "acoustic music" does them a severe injustice. His songs are much more than typical singer/songwriter performances or unplugged versions of rock songs. They are skillfully crafted compositions that, at the same time, are spontaneous and ever evolving. Mixing up his set with Swervedriver classics, Toshack Highway gems and an eclectic assortment of covers, Adam keeps his audience listening intensely to every beat. If you have any chance at all to make one of these upcoming shows, do whatever you can to get there. You will see and hear something special.

NYC Added
Here's the anonymous tip: "Adam is playing an extra show at Alan Mcghee's Radio 4 club night at Don Hill's, 511 Greenwich S (corner of Spring), New York City on Friday 13th July. Take C or E train to Spring, 1 or 9 to Canal St. No cover before 10 pm, only $10 after 10 pm. 212-219-2850 Adam will take either the 10 pm or midnight slot." 07/03/2001 -- Swervedriver

I got a chance to speak with Adam briefly after the show and picked his brain about the current status of SWD, Toshack Highway and anything else I could think of. At the present time, Swervedriver is free from any contractual obligations and Adam said they're currently looking around for a new deal. Adam will be releasing some four track solo stuff under the moniker Toshack Highway on SpaceBaby records. Information about that release will be available here and the Toshack Highway site as well. Catapult Records was rumored to be re-releasing Ejector Seat Reservation and 99th Dream, but I've yet to confirm this with them. Stay tuned for more details. 07/03/2001 -- Adam's Solo Acoustic Tour a Success.
It was a small, but East Coast-heavy tour that graced many old friends' and new fans' ears with timeless Swervedriver classics, beautiful renditions of covers and a few new tunes. Culminating with last nights performance at Fez in New York, Adam again reminded us why his & Swervedriver's music is so enduring. To see this man perform live -- to be in the same room with such intense energy -- is awe inspiring. If you managed to miss these shows you should hang your head and cry. No distance was too great to travel to hear one of the great sogwriters of our time.
