Swervedriver-Duel Not quite as straightforward as 99th on the structure front but we'll have a go nevertheless. Tuning-wise, you can get away with one guitar in standard tuning and one with the bottom E dropped down to D. For the opening riff Adam used the alternate tuning Jazzmaster which he auctioned not too long ago but it is perfectly playable in normal tuning and goes a bit like this:- E|---------5-------- I suppose you could B|-----------3------ call this guitar one. G|-3-3---3-----3---- D|-----5---------5-- A|------------------ E|------------------ The drums and dampened guitar chord crescendo in:- D|--8-- You guessed it, A|--8-- guitar two. D|--8-- Followed by 'you can't ask why..':- Guitar one Guitar two E|-------- B|-------- G|-8--5--- times 2 times 2 D|-8--5--- D|-13--10-- A|-6--3--- A|-13--10-- E|-------- D|-13--10-- Second verse is much the same as the first except after Adam sings 'could spark me off a candlelight..' for the first time. Guitar one plays the same as before. Guitar two however has a chiming, droning motif goin' on in the background:- G|--12-- This octave device crops up all over D|------ Swervie songs. The solo in 'Rave down' A|--10-- is built around it and the beginning of 'Behind the scenes and sounds of the times' starts with it. Moving on, the second time Adam sings the candlelight line you'll notice the distortion gets a LOT bassier. Not being blessed with fourteen distortion pedals (or a Boss Heavy Metal which I suspect this is) but being blessed with a Jazzmaster I tend to flick the pick-up selector on me lead circuit forward for the neck pick-up. Can be a bit tricky trying to sing, strum and flick at the same time but no doubt there is a more sensible way to do it. Anyhoo the the drop D guitar on this section goes like this:- G|------------------------------------ D|-1--8-6---13-10-8-10-8-10-8-10-8-6-- A|-1--8-6---13-10-8-10-8-10-8-10-8-6-- D|-1--8-6---13-10-8-10-8-10-8-10-8-6-- Absolutely NO indication of rythm here I know, just the chords but play slowly and you'll get the idea. this instrumental section (with the'whooooeeeee' noise in the background) is played twice and goes back to the verse. The second time you hear this bit on the record it goes into the 'down to the marketplace' section the basic rythm chords for which are C and F. Right after 'goin to learn to live..' when the rythm goes into F, our drop D friend play something along the lines of this:- E|---------------- Play this in the style of the B|---------9-7-7-- opening riff. G|-7-7---7-------- D|-----8---------- A|---------------- D|---------------- The whole thing is repeated and then goes into the mellow bit and guitar two plays these two riffs sixteen times:- E|----------------- |--------12-10-10- B|----------------- |----------------- G|-9^10-9---------- |-9^10-9---------- D|--------12-10-10- |----------------- A|----------------- |----------------- This is followed by the crescendo leading into 'the tightrope's wound around...'. guitar one swoops down holds a bit like this:- E|-------------5- Guitar two plays exactly the same but B|-------------3- delayed by one beat(or it's just the G|-10\---------3- one guitar with delay set on v.short D|----\3-3-3-3-3- feedback). There's LOTS of guitars in A|--------------- this bit but these parts are the E|--------------- clearest to hear. Yet again there's no great surprises after that and the mellow finish is just an extended reprise of the earlier mellow bit. That's Duel then. .
