Much !!

Date: Sun Jan 28 22:42:50 2001 Name: Sundog City/State/Country: Chi-Town Comment: ‘ROCK FACT John Herndon from Tortoise almost ended up as Swervedriver’s drummer once when he was still known as Johnny Machine from the Poster Children ….’ Adam, was this back when you guys played Chicago during the Raise tour? I remember that show because Adi walked off the stage and I was wondering where the hell he went…a few minutes later I feel someone shoving through the card from behind…it was Adi making his way from the bar to the stage. I tried to see you guys on the Mezcal Head tour, but you guys played that show with the Smashing Pumpkins (A show I definitely wanted to see) but ti was sold out before I could get tickets. I was able to see you on the last tour at the Metro (But they made it a damned midnight show…I hate those) and remember your Mic not working for the opening song (Behind the scenes of the sounds and the times) so we got the instrumental version. I also remember the hottie trying to get your attention in the front row (petite/dark hair/Yoooww!!) and the bouncers being their usual ‘Bad Ass’ selves. The only reason I bring this up is, I remember the bouncers not flinching or paying attention during the show. That is, until you guys launched into Duress. When you really got going that track the bouncer skept turning around to watch..it was killer! Hey, maybe the next time you guys play chi-town you can include ‘Planes over the skyline’ in the set list! Until we get some new Swervie I’ll just keep kicking back with TH. P.S.- If there are any Dark Star fans here (Former members of Levitation) they reportedly have a new release OTW in February. SD
Date: Sun Jan 28 22:08:38 2001 Name: Sundog City/State/Country: Chi-Town Comment: Paulo, I hope your dream of seeing MBV live (Doubtful) comes true. I hope this because I would probably get to see them again. I saw them at the Metro in Chicago in support of ‘Loveless’ when they opened for Dinosaur Jr. (I thought it would be an awesome show since I was really into both bands at the time). I totally underestimated how incredibly F*****G! Awesome MBV would be live. The Metro was only about half full when they played so I had a great view of the show from the balcony seats (When they had seats) and the last song they played was, I think, ‘You made me realize’. Only it opened with a 15 to 20 minute guitar wailin’ wall of sound that just suddenly exploded into the song when they had the whole damned place resonating! It was also one of the loudest shows I had ever been too. They had a rotoscope displaying ‘images’ behind them while they played. By the time Dino took the stage (And I still really like them.BTW, you guys picked up ‘J. Mascis and the Fog’ with Kevin Shields helping out? If youliked DIno, get it!) Anyway, after MBV played, watching Dino play was sort of like, who’s the whiner with the guitar just standing on the stage wanking? I don’t say that as slam of Dino, I say that for reference as to how incredible MBV were live. Keep hoping it happens again. SD

When I got there, the doorman tried to spoil my day telling me with a leer it was sold out but fortunately I’d booked my ticket beforehand. And I do remember that soundguy (must have been the same guy…)unplugging everything while someone (very pissed off)in the audience yelled at him over and over “I’m gonna cut your BAAALLS OFF!!” But I was already quite satisfied and decided to leave. Those venues (TT’s and Middle East) are alright but I guess Boston, the birthplace of indie in the US, deserved something better. At least I heard the Mayor was thinking of extending licensing hours. Massachussetts is probly the only place on earth where liquor stores close at 8 FUCKIN PM!!!

Date: Fri Jan 26 12:45:49 2001 Name: Paulo City/State/Country: Real Comment: That’s COOL, Mr. Jez! 16-track live recording, that must be worth a listen! Would you let us know the full set list on that one?! I am asking because the gigs I went to in Boston/NY were actually in 97, not 98. Shame on me, how could I ever forget it! You played T.T. the Bears (not Middle East) and The Tramps that year. It was July 1997, and the moment I came to know you were playing these shows I bought my ticket and flew straight off to New York. It was amazing, I still remember on the first night I was wearing this exclusive Swervie t-shirt I’d fabricated myself and right in front of T.T.s this guy comes out of a van, shades on, and asks me where I’d got that shirt from. I was too drunk to realize he was Mr. Steve George himself!! (He won’t probly won’t remember but I’m quite sure it was him). You opened with For Seeking Heat, then It’s All Happening Now (I had already received the CENSURED CD version of ESR, so I sang along — and maybe ALONE — on that one)and the third song was Duel. GEEZzuz, the place was packed and the sound…man THE SOUND! I never thought you could play so perfect a set of songs that otherwise seem pretty ‘undoable’onstage (since on the CD they have so many layered guitars, fxs, and (Moulder’s) production behind…)Anyway, it was the PERFECT gig (In NY it was a lil’ less enthusiastic but it still rocked).

Talking about sarcasm, Mr. Adam Franklin’s alledgedly the author of one sidesplitting joke concerning Mr. Kevin Shields’new dog-breeding hobby, if I got it right. And if so, I hope that His Highness Mr. Kevin Shields’got over that eardrum problem. It’s actually time he put out another of those FLABBERGASTING records like in the late-80’s/early 90’s. He’s really the mentor of an entire generation, along with Mr. Mascis, Mr. Moore and Mr. Francis. It’s nice to know all of them are still rockin…The problem is, having seem almost all of them live (Dino in 93, Swervies in Boston and NY in 98, Frank Black in 99, and Sonic Youth last year) I still haven’t seen MBV. I have GOT to seem them before I can say at last: Mission Accomplished! But I fear it won’t be possible…The last I heard washat Bilinda Butcher’s post-rocking in Snowponey, O’ ci$#\ig has vanished and Mr. Shilds himself is busy working as (THE most requested) sideman in the alternative rock world. Only another Swervedriver gig could compensate that…
Date: Thu Jan 25 17:20:41 2001 Name: Erik City/State/Country: RVA Comment: Dave, yeah, you gotta be careful. Sometimes sarcasm is difficult to pick up in places such as these. I agree with your opinion of the English music press (with no offense to all the brits who post here) As for Mr. Ashcroft, I never thought that I of all people would be saying this because I used to adore Verve about as much as I did Swervedriver, but fuck that guy. Though “Northern Soul” will always have a place in my heart as one of the best albums ever, I had to reevaluate Ashcroft after seeing the Verve home video. He came off as ignorant as he is arrogant. I never felt any transatlantic grudges whatsoever, but his Anti-American slurs did not sit too well with some folks. I guess he forgets that there were young, open spirited Americans who believed in Verve’s music while they were still getting drunk in Wigan and no one in England gave the slightest fuck about them. Ole Dick’s actually playing in DC next week, I’ll not be there. If the Erik 5 years ago saw the Erik of now ranting like this, he would have probably gone and committed himself. Ghost, I’m another goddamn guitar player, one of three in the band. I play a ’57 strat and 1980 SG if that’s what you were asking. Kristen, your uniqueness seems to grow more and more. A swerve listenin’, gothic, surfin’ Ozzie…nice… Hope all is well with everyone else.

Date: Wed Jan 24 01:15:14 2001 Name: Erik City/State/Country: RVA Comment: Dave, you should jump on that brother. Every SWD fan needs that. There’s a record store owner in Norfolk, Va who was friends with that Danny guy, the drummer who played briefly for the band in between Graham and Jez. I think that Danny hooked him up with quite a few of those singles. I see one every time I go there. I bought this sweet video of the band playing in DC during the Raise tour ’91 from that shop. At the end of it they’re playing “Jesus” and Adi throws a fit over his bass conking out and slams it on the stage. He walked off mid-song. It’s pretty fuuny. I wish that I was actually there for that. I wouldn’t see the band for the first time until two years later, minus Grahamn and Adi… (not that I’m complaining about my introduction to Steve and Jez). At that point I was just happy to see that the band was still together. A year before that show I saw the Faith Healers and Moonshake and those bands told me that Swerve was no more. I was a happy man when I saw Mezcal Head come from out of nowhere. Jesus, I’m mighty chatty tonight. I’m gonna shut the hell up for now. Hope all is well with everyone.

Date: Tue Jan 23 22:21:53 2001 Name: Art City/State/Country: NYC Comment: I believe the story with It’s All Happening Now and Bob Dylan is that some of Dylan’s people (his manager?) heard the song, recognized the lyric and told SWD to take it off the album… or else. That’s why the early copies of ESR has it on there and the later ones don’t. Remember the issue with the Verve and the Stones and Bittersweet Symphony? I think it’s bloody shite!!

Kik, that’s hilarious that you mentioned Bruce Springsteen!! At one point in the evening, before all of the madness started, Born in the USA was cranked on their jukebox!! I swear that I’m not making that up. We should have known what we had in store for us when, upon arrival, they asked us if we played any Jimmy Buffet tunes. I think it’s great how the band can make references to the greats without ripping them off. My band played this weekend in Raleigh, and before we went on, the sound man played the Chocolate Watchband’s version of “Baby Blue”. It made my night. We were treated like kings in Raleigh. The next night we were booked for some frat hang out on the Duke campus in Durham, were cussed at from the moment we arrived, unplugged after two minutes of our first song, were told to get the fuck out, and were chased, yes chased, out there by a bunch of meat heads who banged and kicked our van as we drove off, and threatened to kill us. It was such a beautiful rock moment. I’m not sure which night I prefered. Hope everything’s cool with all of you.

By the way, the 1990 John Peel session certainly featured ‘Over’ and ‘Out’, plus possibly ‘Juggernaut Rides’ and ‘Zedhead’. Adi and Jimmy sang the verses on ‘Over’in a hardcore Black Flag style, and then I sang the middle-8 and then the song turns into a kind of dreamy MBV style outro..there’s 3 versions in existance, the Peel session, a live at the Marquee Radio 1 version and then the version from the Raise session which sits unreleased as Adi and Jim had grown tired of their hardcore yelling and refused to sing it! Consequently I sang it in a whisper but nobody wanted it on the album..this track totally ROCKS!! and would have shifted the dynamic of Raise considerably onto somewhere else, i think….oh well Also the Liverpool Swervedriver Appreciation Society has nothing to do with me but i’m glad there is one..4-0 4-0!…and I agree with Sam that The Sea and Cake are worth checking out..POST-ROCK FACT John Herndon from Tortoise almost ended up as Swervedriver’s drummer once when he was still known as Johnny Machine from the Poster Children …..blah blah…don’t you all just hate these computers? no? oh. bye
