Comment: Oh my god. I come home from work and pop onto the Swervedriver site for my daily update on what everyone has been up to, and discover that Secret Steve has now made his way here. Not long now then I imagine, until everyone on the swervedriver site will be invited to go to the Tut $amp;Shive and wear a chicken suit with a red ribbon round the neck. It’s madness.

Comment: Last week was a shite week for numerous personal reasons, plus my amp knackered. it wasn’t all shite, but there were very few good things – except this rolling stones cover band that we saw who were excellent. People keep charging me administration fees because i am lazy ( what i mean is, i didn’t pay my accommodation for uni). Oh, i saw this other band and the guitarist made the swervedriver noise (you know, the one that sounds like its destroying your speakers and your mind at the same time) and he didn’t even realise, i’ve been trying to make that noise for years – chwhchwchcwhchcwhwhwchcwocwowcowcocwcwgcwhcwhcwc, (with my guitar) but to no avail. I was gutted

Comment: Bert, the band was called Heads Up. Yeah, I know, a stupid name. But the music ws fun. Kinda like early Chili Peppers (and I mean EARLY) mixed in with a little Jane’s and some Sabbath for good measure. But that was a long time ago…

Comment: I never knew that Lubricated Goat and the Hard Ons were Ozzie bands, great fucking band names. It’s good to know that the Oz-land is still pumpin’ em out. In the 80’s, it seemed as if the capital of Australia was Detroit. There were a lot of great MC5 wannabe’s from Oz back then. Have any of you ever been to New Zealand? I’ve always heard that Christchurch on the South Island has a good scene. That’s the town where Roy Montgomery is from, amazing guitar player…

Comment: why say yeah? fester $amp;kik – there’s alot of great music out and of course its easier than ever to get ahold of it. the problem is that talented and creative musicians are not rewarded for their efforts. small indie labels should form a coalition or something to come up with a plan to break down the big label corporate monopoly on radio and tv(mtv, vh1, etc.) i dunno why it bothers me so much but it does. being a successful artist no longer has anything to do with good songwriting…why is that? why say yeah $amp;accept it? veedub@usa.com

Comment: Billie, I played in a band in ’92 that openned up for the Hard Ons in Antwerp. I’ve never seen a more energetic performance. It topped seeing RKL (Rich Kids on LSD) in 1985 when the whole band was never less than 3 feet in the air at all times.

Comment: Eric, Theres many fine Oz bands that probably should of had more success than they received especially outside of Oz where there probably virtually unknown. Bluebottle Kiss ,Sandpit,Kryptonics,The Stems,Effigy,Lubricated Goat,The Hard Ons.Speaking of The Hard Ons when I saw them at the old Berlin Club was probably one the best gigs Ive seen.Watching Blackie $amp;Kiesh play while Ray was chasing some dude around the crowd who threw something at him was a laugh!! JJ goto http://www.powderfinger.com/discog/discog.asp they have real audio samples of all there songs. They have supported Swervedriver before or was that the other way around

I was going to go to Spain with my best friend who was going to live there with his girlfriend, I was planning on staying for a while so I quit my job at Tower, moved all of my furniture back to Grand ‘ol Hampn and then my friend called me and told me he broke up with her. WAW-WAW SO he says come back with me to Providence Rhode Island we’ll have a ball blablabla. THen I get stuck here cause It’s taken me 3 months to find a job to get the money up to go. So that’s the Italy story. I wonder what happened to Jez…

Comment: Speaking of Australians who post here, I’ve been meaning to ask you Ozzies if any of you ever liked the Underground Lovers. They are the only Austrailian Dreampop band that I’ve heard. I dig them. The other Oz bands that I like are Radio Birdman, The Saints, Feedtime, and the Scientists, but those bands are a different story altogether. Paul, I’m afraid that I missed Ole Hank. It was a busy weekend for me. My girlfriend was in town, Dragstrip played a daytime gig at Glass and Powder, and there was a party at my house last night. Brittany and Garrett were there. They both spoke rather highly of you. Garrett said something about you going to Italy with some girl? If so, then have an awesome trip, you lucky bastard… E

They’re apparently releasing Odyssey #5 over here in the States in a few weeks and they supported Coldplay. Can anyone tell me what albums of theirs are good, if any, and if that Odyssey #5 album is worth purchasing. Do they sound like Swervedriver?

Comment: Ghost-Canadian beer companies use great music all the time in their commercials. They’ve used Soundgarden, JAMC (Catch Fire if you can believe it), Massive Attack, Blur, Smiths, and even Ministry. Commercialism aside, I think it’s kinda cool. Great music, great beer-what more could you want? Now, being a self proclaimed movie guru, Duel was one of my favourite movies long before Swervie came along. When I read in an interview (Raygun I believe) that the song was inspired by the movie, it was just another reason for Swervie to be my all-time personal favourite. But, I’ve never gotten a connection between the lyrics and the movie itself. And I don’t think there is one per se. One thing I am willing to bet on though is that the cowbells at the very end of Satansville is a sample from the movie’s soundtrack. The Movie Guru has spoken! Speaking of which, do yourself a favour and check out the Lord of the Rings movie preview. I just saw it and it’s awesome.

Comment: Kik I already have too many guitars and not enough skills. I had 7 guitars because I had a compulsion to buy em, but since I’ve been unemployed for 3 months I had to sell 3 off. Has anyone seen that fucking car commercial I thinks its for Chevrolet with “Happy when It Rains” by the Jesus and Mary Chain in it? Damn that makes me feel weird.THere’s the thought I have good for them they deserve the money, but then I think the people don’t deserve to hear it. I mean you know the people just ignore it anyway, but they still don’t deserve it. Also this morning at about 7:00 on a cable station they were playing the movie Duel. I always get a kick out of seeing that on tv. Kik you can hear some of my stuff at http://www.mp3.com/sofopromonsters THeres a picture of me in a cape too. Erik are your boys going to see Hank Williams III tonight? I guess Jez didn’t recover from his birthday…Oh I got a new Swerve shirt in the mail today It’s got the SquirtGun from Mezcal Head on the front and back and the back says SWERVERDRIVERDUEL now I will win and influence friends.

Comment: Exactly locks.. How about some live shows this summer, including US West coast swing ?? Last time SWD did the trip down the coast in summer of 98’I was lucky enough to have some time off (it was right ouround 4th of July) and caught the Seattle, Portland, Sacramento $amp;San Francisco shows. What a trip!! The Sacramento show was pretty humorous, England had lost their World Cup match that day and the band seemed a bit uhhhhhhh lethargic might be the right word. SF the next night at Slims was KILLER however, and wrapped up an amazing holiday and run of 4 straight SWD shows!! That was over 2 years ago though, time for another tour!!! “i’ve got cures for any plague anytime”

I extended the offer to Andy about your being able to exploit this site for your own benefit (and not just for my evil t-shirt scalping schemes) quite the same way that Radiohead (www.radiohead.com) or Mogwai (www.abandcalledmogwai.com) use theirs but I never heard back. Comment: Another note about bad karma: I was 13 or 14 when my band at the time decided we needed a name. We did the usual ritual of flipping through the dictionary and pointing to a word as the pages rolled by. The word my finger landed on was KARMA. We read the definition and decided that it required a prefix, hence BAD KARMA. We played lots of friends parties and the local “teen lounge” amazing our friends with horrible renditions of Black Sabbath’s Electric Funeral and Jimi Hendrix tunes. We had three originals: Hyperspace (about a kid trapped in an evil video game), Atom Bomb (a first-person narrative spoken by the atom bomb itself–truly beautiful), and an Iron Man-ish epic called Let’s Take A Trip To Hell (you can imagine what the lyrics were like) during which our lead singer “Ozzie” (note the different spelling) would hack his Telecaster to bits with a flaming machete. It was hard for any other band I was in to ever follow that act…

Comment: Hi Kik I am a community college phototography major dropout. I have an aversion to school. 5 minutes and I can’t sit still but I am seriously considering film school next fall because I have realised I am going nowhere sitting around in my hometown. My friend who is getting his masters in creative writing at an Ivy league school made a good point to me the other day over the phone. I said “I just don’t care about shit like, The Moving Image; Why is it so Popular (thats a class in first year film school)at 8:00 in the morning” and he said “yeah but it’s better than serving coffee to people at 8:00 in the morning”. So he’s got me there. I have to tell myself that one every day. So what’s going on on the other side of the planet? I’ve gotta go brush my teeth.

Comment: Paul, Carolina is always good. Thanks for asking. Raleigh and Chapel Hill (especially the former rather than the latter) have become my home away from home, mainly due to the fact that my girlfriend lives in Raleigh. Dragstrip usually plays good shows there too. There’s definitely a sense of community down there that Richmond, nor any other place in Virginia for that matter, seems to have. How about Hampton? Is everything as it always was there? Let me know if your band is playing anytime soon. Hope all is well with the rest of you…E

Comment: In fact Jez, I laughed during that match because I totally dislike Anderlecht but the reason why I wanted them to go to quarter finals was that Belgian football would have been more appreciated and rated so that we could have had 2 teams for next champion’s league, but I really hope you have drunk some beers to celebrate that victory! And that’ll be the last time I speak of that(what’s the equivalent english expression on that Forrest Gump Film?) Comment: I got no reaction to my story the first time and obviously I need attention so I thought I’d run it again.Garlic those are excellent pics. I have to go back to work today after a 3 month hiatus so cut me some slack. Fuck IT!!!! Starting in 1990 I got into shoegazer music. I loved it. I lived it. When I first saw Swervedriver on 120 minutes (Duel) I didn’t like them. Something about it didn’t fit into the sound I accepted. They looked funny too, no horizontally striped shirts and puffy bowl haircuts. I listened to nothing but British bands for years but when the Smashing Pumpkins Gish came out I became a S.P. fanatic. I was the first one through the door at the Siamese Dream tour in 1993. I stood right up against the barrier in front of the lead mic and “suffered” through swervedriver’s set but before the Pumpkins came out, the crowd got out of control and my girlfriend and I had to be pulled out for fear of being crushed to death. As soon as we got to the back wall, the lights dropped, the intro to Rocket started and as Billy screamed, “Love”! The lights and pyro exploded, my girlfriend and I cried (hey cut me some slack, I was 19) because we were so far in the back we couldn’t see them. After the show I stood side by side with Jez and asked him, “are the Pumpkins gonna come out?” I stood there holding my guitar (in the rain no less) praying that Billy would come out and sign it as Jez carried on a conversation with me that I had no interest in. (AAAAGGGHHHH!)(And Billy just waved and then got on his bus) Anyway flash forward a year later and I have a new girlfriend, she’s so beautiful she’s attending modeling school, and she’s such a genius she writes a zine that people all over the country subscribe to. She gave me a copy of Raise and said you have to listen to this. I started off slow but started to realise, damn this is good stuff. A year later I would be embarrassed about ever having liked the Smashing Pumpkins, and ashamed that I had not realised what a special thing it was to stand directly in front of Adam Franklin while he belted out his hardest tunes. Another year later (1996) that beautiful girl friend of mine committed suicide because she was exhausted having severe epilepsy and just couldn’t stand it anymore. She called me 2 nights before she did it, but I didn’t have the chance to return her call. Now all these years later I feel that I am the biggest Swerve fan and that I would never, as long as I live feel embarrassed about loving them the way I loved other bands when I was a stupid kid, and that copy of Raise that Shannon gave me is so valuable to me I’d run into a burning building to get it. No one is allowed to touch it! And I certainly wish I could stand beside Jez and have a conversation with him now. (Sorry I was rude Jez)So all this is in response to ZrKA’s Question about a connection to Swerve’s music and how important it can be. Adam,Jimmy,Steve,Jez you can never know how far your music has gone to touch people, it can pull me out of any moody mood. Thanks guys. ( my friends still call me a dumbass for shunning Jez 8 years later) ——————————————————————————–

Comment: Adam! Bad Karma?! Certainly not!! That’s actually the perfect chance for us to talk a little about “Swadharma”: according to the hindu doctrine, the fulfillment of that specific activity which conforms to your own personal skills, nature and destiny. (I do think some people (not many) are simply BORN for music, be that classic, jazz or Rock). And that lead us straight to the following question: Is there hope for a fifth album!?

That’s one of the reasons I got married in the first place, I had it written into my vows. Thanks again, Adam!

Comment: do you think it’s bad karma to check out your own band’s web-pages? i have access to a computer at my own leisure this week and saw the soundgarden reference…it’s all so long ago…but for the (78rppm) record, there was no bad feeling between the bands (soundgarden $amp;swervedriver), and (hey! guess what! this is one of the rock’n’roll stories i bore MY friends with) ..but i once played drums with soundgarden on one song on stage in philadelphia (wa-hoo!!), i don’t know the song, but basically it’s chris cornell solo on acoustic guitar right until the final chord when matt cameron plays a drum-fill and that’s the end…and one night i said “i could do that!” and he said “go on then!” and so he showed me it really quickly and i did it, although if cornell had turned around i suspect he wouldn’t have been too ecstatic…….. anyway, to garlic soul…i’m glad our comfy trousers got captured on film …. and that cortex release somebody was talking about was australian i think… and congrats to leeds united and jez for qualifying for the quarter finals… if liverpool hold out against roma tonight i’ll leave a drunken message..maybe (damn! that’s probably the kiss of death) and you would all have had a much nicer valentine’s day if you all left the computer alone and got out of the house once in a while!……i’m kidding, honest?&*^%$#@

Comment: No problem Erik, you can diss Soundgarden all you want. I wasn’t trying to get into a SWD vs SG debate because at the end of the day, I’m a much bigger SWD fan than a SG fan. I only wanted to offer my $.02 about “why” SWD wasn’t loud enough on their tour w/ Soundgarden and point at that despite appearances, SG band members have openly professed their respect for SWD..

Comment: James, sorry for dissing your local heroes, but my opinions of SWD vs Soundgarden remain the same. SunDog, the show was incredible last night. I’m really bad about Labradford’s song titles so I’m not sure if they played the tune you mentioned. Their set was great aside from some dipshit getting up in front them screaming and acting like he was at a Skynard concert. They were very patient about him though, naturally. Where in the Chi-town do you live? My band’s label, Beluga, is based out of Chicago. We’re playing there in March. I’m looking forward to being there again, but I’m not, however, looking forward to the wheather. I’m too much of a Southern boy for those Chi-town winters.

Comment: Oh, and one more thing about those pics. I just stumbled upon this place and didnt realize that SWD may peek in occasionally, so I just wanted to mention that, since I’ve never been on a stage, I didnt realize at the time what an annoying distraction it can be for some musicians to have a camera flash in your eyes while playing…so I’m apologising, now (I feel guilty about my possible connection to the absence of an encore that night!) –shawnte

Comment: I was at 2 of the shows w/ SWD opening for Soundgarden (Portland $amp;SF) and remember how frustrating the minimal volume was during the SWD set. Still though, they were great shows. Monster Magnet was weak, but SWD $amp;Soundgarden were both amazing. Adam, I appreciate your passion, but not sure that too many bands are capable of blowing Soundgarden “the fuck off the stage”.. Not sure what was up w/ the SG soundman, but I know for a fact that most of the band members (definitely Thayil and Cameron)are avid SWD fans. Just a couple of years ago in Seattle in fact Thayil mentioned SWD as a band he really liked in an interview in the Rocket (Seattle music rag).. Not trying to defend Soundgarden here, but my hunch is that it was a powertripping soundman calling the shots on volume and not some band plot to slight SWD. I do wish those shows were louder though.. I’d seen SWD for the first time some months before that in 91′ touring w/ Poster Children at a small club in Seattle (Rock Candy), and I’ve been a huge SWD fan ever since.

Comment: Hey, I just read an article that mentioned Swervedriver once doing some shows with Soundgarden. Were they actually touring a leg together, or just intersecting on a few dates? Any other info about these shows? Soundgarden is my other favorite band, so I was extremely curious about any details about a possible interaction between the two of them. By the way, I took some photos of the last Swerve gig here in Phoenix and they (surprise) came out great. Here’s a link, if you would like to see them. HTML is, well…html to me, so it’s just a cheesy AOL site and the pics look grainier than they actually are. “http://hometown.aol.com/garlicsoul/swerve.html”

Comment: Excuse the next rant.Just got back from the pub having won £200 playing pool and having seen the mighty Leeds storm to a glorious victoire against the part timers from Anderlecht (wherever that is Bertrand).Vous avez etait completement crucifiee,n’est pas.Just choosing mes mots so all our English speaking friends can understand. Can’t hear much noise from L’Equipe des bientot Chaumagee – ou bien est-ce qu’ils savent comment on nettoye les toilettes?Nous cherchons quelques povres pour exactement ce metier a nos stade.Shit French, but the triumph remains!!!It’s my birthday saturday – boy am I up for a party now, Monsieur Bertrand. As to the bet – if you beat us next week I will personally (through my new label – LUFC Records) release some of the rarest Swervie shit in existance.See I did most of the recording so I have all the DATS!!!Swervedriver doing En Viva El Fulham anyone???If I can find it (really) and Anderwho beat Leeds that’ll be a free mp3 on this site (the lord Art willing). By the way – ironic someone mentioned that Aussie radio sesh today (Chris).I’ve got the DAT from the radio station including the five or six tunes we did after we went off air.Have you got like six of the 12 I got or just what was broadcast?Just interested.Got the top Superheroes or Duress or It’s All Happening or Sunset?Sound’s rubbish but the playing’s pretty good.Early evening, sun going down,South Australia, good weed,Planes flying overhead,a hundred people and us on a rooftop and 80 degrees – ‘course the playing’s pretty good!!!It’s a tough life… Dave me darlin’ – my birthday’s saturday.but the party rolls on to your gig – bring cash for my drinks and copious quantities of serious narcs, stout yeoman.I’ll bring the fruit!! Writing bollox ain’t talking it,but pretty good nonetheless!!!See ya,jez….xxx

Comment: Back in 1995, listening to MCM (French MTV equivalent) and then I saw what I had been searching for 14 years, “Son of Mustang Ford” video clip (never seen it again since that day), and because the way I wanted to go appeared so early in my life and due to that way, I’m now totally against that stupid mass consumption! I’m 19 and just want to go to Africa to live a nature-based life without all that money and crap, back to roots, I don’t know if I have to thank you for opening my eyes or f*** you because now I will live with that feeling (bad conscience) in my head ! If you know José Bové, I think I will end like him, in jail because of protesting against mondialisation. But sure is that rock’n’roll reaches its highest point when you guys play so I think I will thank you And especially you Jez because you’re so “accessible”. But I had preferred Anderlecht to beat Leeds , that will be next week ! A bet? If Anderlecht beats Leeds next week, you make a show here? That’s fair? He? Just swimming across that “Manche” sea and you’re here, not too difficult!

Comment: Erik, i have the ‘why say yeah’ 7″ so it’s all good. Swervies did a radio session in Australia and played various songs, i have about half of it – and with napster closing down it’s going to make my search even more difficult. I first got into swervies in…let’s see..96? so i was about thirteen i think. I always thought swervedriver was a nazi band (yeah, i know now – skrewdriver) until i was shown the error of my ways by my brothers friend who played my duress (i was big into sonic youth, dinosaur jr and polvo at the time and i was like “oh my god”) he did me copies of mezcal head and ejector seat (but ejector seat didn’t work – he forgot to press record on the tape!!) so what i’m basically trying to say is that i’ve listened to swervies constantly for 5 years. First time i saw them was in 98 with my brother and his friend in Camden Town (his mate said it was the best gig he’s ever seen – and he’s seen a few). Speaking of the Smashing Pumpkins, i’m listening to Siamese Dream now. it’s still good – but everything they’ve done since has been bollocks.

Comment: Damn, who do I respond to first? Let’s start with you Paul (Garret told me your name, I hope you don’t mind me saying it here) I was at that boathouse show that you spoke of. It was my first time seeing SWD and the Pumpkins (this of course was way before the Pumpkins turned the suck factor up to eleven) That still remains to be one of the best things these eyes have ever seen. Swerve played a perfect blend of Raise and Mezcal Head material that night… Tuomas, that is quite meddlesome of the Finnish army, but fuck Finland. It’s small potatoes. T-star shall soon be taking over the world… Kik, Chapel Hill was great, thanks. We didn’t have to run for our lives out of there so it was a good night. The night before our show that guy, Eric, from the Archers of Loaf’s new band played. It was great. Mojave 3 played across the street from where we played, on the same night! Lousy timing… Dave, that’s funny that you mentioned that “Change is Gonna Come” experience, I had the same one to the same tune…Jez, “Bubbling Up” is a wonderful tune. I remember you telling me of your attachment to that song when we met in DC… Damon, this is really surreal. Carolyn, from the ABC store, is an old friend of mine!! That’s weird that you know her. What’s even more strange is that she’s a Swerve fan. I totally never knew that!! She must have required this taste in recent years because she used to tease me about my “sissy British music”. Yeah, definitely let me know if you get some music rolling, here’s my email: j_nevada59@hotmail.com A friend of mine who lives in Tejas saw the Bevis Frond there as well. I will see Nick Saloman play live one of these days Goddammit!! My faves of his are “North Circular” and “Son of Walter”. Have fun working at Tower with Tony Bitch and Brittany. Ghost/Paul used to work there too. Hope all is well with everyone…Erik

Comment: Hello me darlin’s.Only me!First – coming to Brazil gig on 21st as long as I’m told where it is and am on the guest list plus one (old tart these days,me!!).Dave – those tomatoes are getting well squidgy mate – is that why you ain’t told me where you’re playing?Or is the gig oop norff? Regarding production stuff – haven’t recorded Powderfinger yet (although they are on my list for this year).Anyone got a bootleg of me doing LIVING TYPE live with Bernie in ’98?I’m putting a video together 4 them $amp;want to cut some of that into it.Must thank them for getting 7 vip tickets for my mates to go 2 the BDO in Auckland,by the way.Lovely boys the ‘Fingers… SWD songs that mean anything?Loads obviously (Duh!!!) but two mainly:”Bubbling Up” on ESR cos apart from loving the words, that recording of the drums is the only time I ever played the tune.I just told Adam to drop it into record and count me in.I’d never heard it before,so was playing blind along with his voice and acoustic.I can hear how much I’m blagging it!!!The other tune is “Rave Down”.Apart from loving playing it live, when I was up for auditioning for Adam and Jim back in ’92 a friend sent me a copy of Raise to suss out a bit.My grandfather died a few days before the audition and the only tune I wanted to hear when I found out was Rave Down.Still dedicate it to him every time we do it (AHHHH!).So there… My production credits are limited (being a drummer and all that!) but we did do pretty much all of Elasticas latest record at the Swervie studio “BAD EARTH”,I co-remixed The Orbs “Fluffy Little Clouds” with OTP – and me and a mate demo’ed around 17 songs 4 the yet to be released new Ash record “Free All Angels” – two of which have been mixed by Owen Morris and stuck on their Shining Light single – which went in at No.8 in the uk chart last week.Got to be because of the Swervie influence – right?!Apart from that and a bit of ADF remixing,it’s all dodgy bands like Brazil!!Looking 4ward to working with that band they call Swervedriver again at some point – talented bunch them..! Does that cover it?Hope so.Take care y’all.Later…..jez….xxx

Comment: Starting in 1990 I got into shoegazer music. I loved it. ( my friends still call me a dumbass for shunning Jez 8 years later)

Comment: “You’ve been away, for so long… you can’t ask why…” Gawd, that brings back old memories… my girlfriend went to the UK in the fall of ’93, fell in love with some British guy, and dumped me. I used to bawl myself to sleep listening to that song… and it still affects me that way. Interesting how music gets intertwined with memories and lodges itself in your brain, eh? Any other Swervies have a memory connection to a certain song? BTW, the girlfriend ended up dumping the Brit, too… and when she came backa after 6 months, she wanted to get back together. We had a brief fling, and then I dumped HER and moved to LA… (wonder what song she connects THAT memory with…) Thank you, Swervedriver, for the impact you have had on my psyche. PLEASE MAKE MORE MUSIC!!

Comment: When “Going Blank Again” first came out the only song that I liked was “Leave Them All Behind”. It slowly grew on me, but the was the last good Ride Album. I hate to admit it, but I did enjoy Hurricane #1 (guilty pleasure). Yes Kristen, I think the song on YLT’s newest that you mentioned is called “Cherry Chapstick”, that song is beautiful. It sounds like my friend’s old band, “The Ultra Cindys”. They were a stellar pop band, but unfortunately, very shortlived. Not to spam, but for all you Jesus and Mary Chain fans, you should check these guys out: www.killerrockandroll.com The band is called Skywave and they’re incredible. Hope all is well with everyone. Comment: I love the YLT albums “Heart Beating as One” and “Electro Pura” RIDE was the one that started it all for me. I was so obsessed with ride that my parents put some blurb about it in my senior yearbook. But again when Carnival of Light came out i said…”Fuck” it’s over. I have and incredible ride concert film from going blank again. It’s actually shot on film with a big production, like the cure in Orange. I also have every Swerve video on tape and a bunch of concert tapes. Although I am not sure if any videos were shot for 99th dream. Did anyone see any? Pale Saints were also one of my favs, I still love them, even the stuff with the female singer. I recently dug up a video from an old 120 of Time Thief of the first pale saints. Hey if anyone wants to trade, I would like to get Dave Kendall episodes of 120. write me at thelovebutcher@msn.com

Comment: And hey guys let me know what you think of these bands. And since everyone flirts with kik i thought i’d be an ass and say hi to her too. Also against popular opinion here I was very disappointed with the new Yo La Tengo album. In fact I thought, I need to take this crap down to Kinko’s and get it shrinkwrapped so I can take it back from whence it came. “sorry”

I really think you’d all like it. www.mp3.com/zentraedi They are a “new wave” pop band with a great guitar style and an adourable female singer, and don’t forget the lo-fi stylings of The Society For Probable Monsters at www.mp3.com/sofopromonsters also for a great guitar based trio (see earlier posts on trios) check out www.mp3.com/fulflejwackass

Comment: Tuomas, you’d better get your pale, Finnish ass into good health again. You all probably already know of this, but there is an amazing live version of Rave Down floating around out there. It’s from the London Band Expo or something like that. There’s also a version of “The Other Jesus” that’s just Adam playing an acoustic and singing. He’s says that it’s a song about “Dopplegangers”. Dave Ashton, are you related to Ron and Scotty by any chance?

Comment: The promo copy of ‘Ejector Seat Reservation’ went for £60 on ebay last night/this morning! Sadly it wasn’t me that won it, which is probably a good thing as i can’t really afford it anyway. Someone has got themselves a right little rarity on their hands. And it’s just goes to show how obsessed with the swervies some people are – 60 quid for a cd you can get in the shop for a tenner, with only the added benefit of one song (but hey, it’s a good song!)

My personal fave choon to play at the minute is ‘it’s all happening now’. E-mail us a list of what songs you want and I’ll get it scribbled $amp;snailed to ya, Address is 9906861m@student.gla.ac.uk

Comment: Yes Londoners, listen to Paulo. I got to see Yo La Tengo a few years back in Athens, Ga. They were touring in support of “I can Hear the Heart Beating as One” (which is a phenomenal album as well) They are amazing. Ira definitely brings the sounds of a Stratocaster to new levels.

Comment: Wow! Pale Saints, the early Pale Saints of the first two records, wonderful band…I guess the main man there was the bass player, very talented guy, though he seemed to be very unpolite. I heard he used to play with his back to the crowd. Shyness is nice, ma non troppo…Gonna look out for that band Lorimer. As per Yo La Tengo, do NOT miss their show if you ever get the chance to see them in support of “And Then…”. I saw them in Boston last year and can’t describe it. They opened with the last song on the CD, and Dave spent some 15 mins playing around with his guitar and the feedback from his amps. I know it doesn’t sound that shocking, but the thing is, he seemed to have EVERY single soundwave totally under control. He sure went bankrupt rehearsing that song. Amazing performance indeed. Lucky me, I’m seeing them again this friday in a local venue.

It’s not an easy thing to do, but here’s my top 5 faves of ‘2000: 1) The Go (self titled) 2) Toshack Highway (of course) 3) Yo La Tengo “and then nothing turned inside out” 4) The Doves “Lost Souls” 5)The Hellacoptors “High Visiblity”

Comment: Oh, yeah. Ozric…I like them for what they are, but once I start listening to them it’s time to pull out the Steve Hillage and Gong disks! I wish SWD would mount a major comeback. I can’t stand Blink182! Talk about all marketing/Crappy music. Didn’t Billy Corgan of SP say one of the reasons he called it quits was that he had to compete against the likes of Brittany Spears? I really miss the so called ‘Shoe Gazer’ Bands (MBV/Slowdive/Early ‘RIDE’/Pale Saints). Though it isn’t Shoe Gazer, I really liked ‘Dots and Loops’ by stereolab for a late 90’s disk. Of course, I can’t whine too much, because we did get TH, which was a complete surprise to me. Oh well. Rambling. Time to go crash to ‘Just Landed.’

Comment: Totally agree with the lack of creativity out there. I think many factors contribute to this, but the major one is an over all lack of muscianship. It’s hard to play what Swervie does. And it’s that blood, sweat and tears that allows them to go places other bands can’t. For me, bands of the late 80’s/early 90’s thought in terms of alblums. Now-a-days it’s all about singles. Score that one big hit and let the record company take over from there. The importance of videos doesn’t help either. You don’t have to be good if your marketable. MTV has proven this time and again. This is why the Swervies have to get it in gear and mount a counter attack. If Radiohead can have their cake and eat it too, why not SWD? It’s not about becoming part of the mainstream, it’s about invading it. If we could just get Dallas to drive Brittany Spears tour bus the revolution could begin…But I’m not waiting for the world to get it so I go sleepy bye-bye now.

Comment: (sorry, had to interrupt the msg): as I was saying, good trios are rare. I didn’t get the chance to listen to Mascis’ new album (“More Light” I think), but am vry curious about it…I’ve been trying to catch up with the new bands but what I sense is a general lack of creativity. After listening to some of the new acts that came out these last years, I’m reaching the conclusion — correct me if I’m wrong — that the late-80s/early 90s breed of indie bands was very special indeed. Take the post-rock scene for instance. With the honourable exception of Tortoise, all of them, Mogwai, Quickspace, Snowpony, Navigator, are quite boring. Not to mention Godspeed, unpalatable in every aspect. Call me (and Dame Edna) old fashioned, but there’s nothing out there like the good ol’ dreampop. Last year, for example, besides Toshack, Yo La Tengo, in their 13th year of existence, put out one of the most sophisticated albums of the past few years. Anyway, enough of this aesthetic nonsense…

Comment: Yeah, Sundog, I’ve heard about MBV’s wall of sound, the famous 10 minute long “death chord” they used to deliver upon the crowd. I got this friend who was in London for the Rollercoaster Festival ( 92?)and he told me that people looked really incredulous, staring at each other as they played, trying to understand what was going on, some would leave, while others covered their ears or just laughed…And thta’s exactly what Mr. Shields expected to happen. I know what you mean when you talk about Dino headlining that show. I am big fan of Dino myself but once I saw them at Brixton Academy in London and was a lil’ disappointed. But I must confess I have a problem with live trios. I don’t BELIEVE in trios. Mind you, i’m not saying all of them are shite. Hendrix used to make it sound like an ORCHESTRA. And once I went to see a band called Ligament at the Garage in London and was quite surprised. It’s not really my cup of tea but on that show they played a dense, well-rehearsed fierce-rock set that dropped my jaws…
