Comment: Kik, I haven’t quite crossed over into “viagra” territory yet, thankfully. Sorry you missed Kiss (but not letting yourself get fucked is a good reason). It’s pissing down in Richmond and I’ve got the fucking flu… I’m going to stop whining now. Hope everyone else is in (sob) good health. -E

Comment: zach- here are those sophia links that you wanted: http://geocities.com/wouterberteloot/sophia.html http://www.geocities.com/cdmunter/gm/sophia.html the second one is the better site. more info, mail order and such. the first one is pretty new and that’s where i saw the news about adam coming back to NY. oh, and mogwai doesn’t have anything scheduled for new orleans… last night was the last us date on the tour, but i would imagine that they would come back once the new album is out… later…

Comment: I found a Haircut 100 record while thrifting today. 99 cents. Had to get it. Remember them? Thier claim to fame was that one of the guys was Ian McCullough’s cousin.I also found a really old looking Throwing Muse record looked like before 4ad but some young punk stole the record out of the sleeve.Did anyone see the great article on the Pixies in last months Mojo magazine from the UK? It’s excellent the whole story from beginning to end. Thier B-sides cd came out this month but still haven’t seen it in any stores in my shitty city. Alright Swervies. Bye.

Comment: I was in Champagne, Illinois (Hum’s home town) this past May. The locals there said that Hum had most likely ended things. The Poster Children are from Champagne as well. I used to really like them when I was in high school ten years ago, but I saw them with Swerve in NYC in ’97 and thought they were kind of lackluster. Maybe it was because of who they were sharing the bill with. I mean who wouldn’t look like Mickey Mouse after sharing the stage with Swervedriver…the same goes for Hum I’m afraid. The weirdest band that I ever saw Swerve play with was Samiam. What the fuck?

Comment: Yeah, Christianity is alive and well. So ? Ioesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a bit of SWD. You enjoy your’s and I’ll enjoy mine. But as this is a Swervie site, on to other things. I learned how to play Blowin’ cool the other day. Easy chords but fun to play real loud! Listening to a bizarre slow version of 93 Million Miles, right now. Fantastic! Napster seems to be still alive and kickin’. Haven’t heard much by Starflyer 59 in a while, had an album of theirs a long time ago. They still around? Would kill (or proselytise?) for a live version of Girl on a Motorbike. Later all, mig ps and those of you still in SWD, more please. Thanks much.

Comment: hi bertrand, i can see what you mean about cousteau – i saw them playing on tv about a year ago and my first thought was “what the #*%^ is this??!!?!” but i ended up thinking it was really quite good! he’s definetly a crooner! a couple of the dandy warhols were at one of our gigs last year (purely by chance!) but i don’t think we played very well which is a bit of a pisser…all i could see was the drummer’s MASSIVE hair! ahh, dylan and nick drake – spot on. i see there’s a dylan track on the ‘turn ons’ on the toshack site…excellent taste! enjoy your fridays everyone!

Comment: hey Ian yeah, i’ve also gotta admit that Swervie’s “It’s All Happening Now” is the most astoundingly original cover (dig the paradox) i’ve ever heard. I believe it was in this guestbook that someone mentioned that the song was intended for ESR but was taken off at the last minute when Dylan’s people caught wind of it. It’s just as well i suppose, ’cause it doesn’t seem to fit either the mood or lyrical theme of that album. You shouldn’t have any problem finding it on napster though.

Comment: I’m not ashamed to admit that I fell in love with Ace Frehley at the age of 4 (before I discovered sexuality) and credit him soley for me wanting to play guitar. My fave guitarists are: Ace, James Williamson, Ron Asheton, Leigh Stephens, Adam&Jimmy (of course), Nick McCabe, Kevin Shields, Wayne Kramer, Sonic Smith, and Nick Drake. Sorry for guitar geeking it there… Marianne was quite lovely when she was younger. Nowadays, she’s the kind of woman that I’d to step between her and her cigarettes. I’m off to Raleigh to see the lady friend. Have good weekends all. -E

Comment: Last evening, I went to Brussels(Bruxelles) for a Dandy Warhols concert. The first part was Cousteau. Heard about? Good music really but the singer should be sacked, awful voice, nothing to see with the music (Shaking his fingers like a variety TV singer, really stupid) but a great guitarist. The Dandy Warhols then played 2 hours along. Behind them a screen showing psychedelic cycles like Winamp plug-ins. I think it was a fabulous show with these psychedelic riffs that keeps you in your own trance. Far the best concert I go to (Sorry, I’ve never been to a swervie show). I even manage to get an autograph by the keyboard(ist???)girl on my ticket. They were more sober in their attitude that I thought they were (really sympathic, not arrogant). Definitely my second favourite band behind Swervedriver. And my Swervedriver favourite song is ‘single finger salute’ (just a little bit too short) which brings me the image of a man on his sledge pulled out by huskies (the dog) crossing a flat snowy north pole land.

Comment: go for it kik – you’ll only regret it if you don’t! is it REALLY the last time or are they just saying that? all i can really remember about the film is marianne (aaahhhh) riding around (on her bike – not the frenchman) looking spaced in a kind of inane way…cool leather suit though!…i’m sure i can’t compete with our scandanavian brothers but it really is bloody cold here!!!

Comment: erik, i’m sure you’re right…i pretended to be marianne faithful to alleviate a spell of existential boredom. she was in the film of the same name though, and when i saw it a couple of years ago, i just had the swervie song in my head the whole time…well almost, it does get a bit steamy as i recall! fave swervie song is definetly very hard to pin down, seeing as how they haven’t done anything even remotely crap!! i think i would have to go for ‘laze it up’ though…along with ‘standing here’ by the stone roses, ‘ocean size’ by jane’s addiction and gimme shelter, it’s definetly one of the best sounding records ever!…in my humble opinion, of course!

Comment: Sundog, yeah, I’ve come to know the highways of Indiana very well. Everytime we drive through there I’m like “this is the state that produced James Dean and Kurt Vonnegut!!” I get into geeky things like that. I forgot to mention FSA’s first album in my last post. Their cover of that Suede song is hilarious. Yes Paul, I dig “Just For a Day” as well, particularly “Erik’s song”…hehe…they even spell it the same way. Is Marianne Faithful the “Girl on a Motorbike”? I always thought that song was written about a band friend who was raped by skinheads. Definitely changed the vibe of the song for me after I found that out. It’s a beautiful tune regardless. I think today my favorite Swerve tune is “Bleeding Heart”. Kik, you humble me so calling me a rock star. Does mean that I’ve got a groupie in the Oz land? 🙂 I hope all the rest of you are Sci-flyin’ high… -E

Comment: When the hell is Swerve going to put out a new album? Do y’all think we’ll ever see another? As for the best Swerve song, for me it’s either Duress. No, it’s Never Lose that Feeling. I like Laze it Up too. And Andalucia. And The Other Jesus. Damn, how can you narrow it down to one song? Impossible. Do any of you swervies like Cool Your Boots by Ride? That is an incredible song as well as those mentioned above. Take it easy, Z

The last time I was at the Empty Bottle was for the band ‘Trans Am’. FSA, I really love their first disk the most. Slowdive is excellent! I saw them on their last tour at the Metro and they were definitely one of those bands that sounded even better in concert.

Comment: First day of spring in Canada, which means about another 7 weeks of snow and rain. All this T-shirt talk has got me thinking about other cool SWD stuff. One thing I totally regret not getting back at the 94′ show was the big MezcalHead poster. It was a beauty. Deep Seat was the first swervie tune put to my ear. I was drunk in the backseat of a car. My friends had just picked up raise and took the oppertunity to give me a listen, and Man, oh man! Sweet sounds be praised! One thing that is distinctly SWD is their ability to marry title/lyrics to the music. Satansville sounds like a train, Girl on a Motorbike sounds like a bike changing gears. My Time sounds like time passing. Very cool. My favourite though is Superman. Adam’s voice through a telephone (phone booth?), cymbals crash like falling debris, and the big base line gives the feeling of the earth rumbling. Its things like that that put the art into rock. SWD–More than just music!

I swear I will if hear it one day if its the last thing I do goddamit! Shameless gig plug coming up. My band TERRA DIABLO are playing the MONARCH in Camden/London on the 12th of APRIL as part of the Bar Fly sessions. I beg anyone who visits this site to come down. There are some heavy Swervedriver influences in our stuff mixed in with some mellower Sofia/Slint type thing and I pledge a free Chuppa Chubb to anyone who turns up in a Swervie T-shirt and if Art, Jezz, Adam or anyone else reads this please come along as I can say then that I have truly fullfilled by destiny in this cheesy football we call planet Earth! Comment: I’ve “been away for soooo loooong”. I just got back from my band’s little mini-tour. SunDog, I was in the Chi-town a few nights ago. We played the Empty Bottle and Morseland, it was a great time, but unfortunately, my southern fried ass is fighting off a cold now. Art, that sounds amazing. Not only is Kim’s the best record store that I’ve seen in all of my travels, but seeing Swervedriver there playing what might be my favorite song by them would rule. Paulo, I think my favorite FSA album is “Distance”. I think that it’s available on Drag City records, but I’m not too sure about that. They have so many releases that it’s difficult to keep up with them. Yeah, you’ve got to be careful with some of their EPs. They’re one of those bands that likes to release a lot of “filler” material in the form of an EP (which is generally useless, live guitar feedback). “Chorus” and “Further” are also good albums. Paul, yes Slowdive is excellent. I think Soulvaki was their stellar release (though the earlier MBV-sounding stuff was great too) Kik, good to hear from you again. Sorry those fucking yanks stole your best shirts. Hope everyone else is well. -E

Comment: forgot to mention, i only recently got a listen of the whole toshack cd, & have to say there are some gorgeous songs on there. also heard a live acoustic take from that iNet show adam did, (a song called ‘Over’). apparently was to be a swd song from mezcal days but never made the cut. darn good song though. hmm fresh swd treats 🙂 anyone got that show on mp3 format??? i was thinkin of recordin it myself through realplayer then converting -> wav –> mp3, but the stream keeps breakin up. If no-one has already, i’ll put in the effort & post the tunes, but someone with better connection would get better results.

PS: D’you wanna know how do Swervies sound live? Go to Napster and downloadn Triple J’s (“rare”)live version of Blowin’ Cool. It’s PURE swervedriver. Both guitars are in PERFECT synch and Jez is practically EATING UP the whole drum kit. The closest you can get to the real thing…

Have you all heard them before? They’re from Brooklyn, NYC and they’re fucking great. They were this whirlwind of fuzzed out guitars, farfisas, and one of the most intense drummers that I’ve ever seen. Hopefully they’ll make their way to everyone else’s parts of the world. Hope all of you are well. -E

Comment: SWERVEDRIVER: BITS n PIECES. We always hear about one’s favourite records and songs, but there’s hardly any discussion about the “song bit” dimension when it comes to rock and roll. You know, those two or three breathtaking seconds that totally blow yer mind…Here are, in my opinion, two of Swervedriver’s fabulous moments: SCI-FLYER [from 03:45 to 03:51]: Where did Adam/Jimmy get that whining tune from!? Seems like amidst total chaos, there comes a loud and agonizing scream from someone reaching out for help, only to be engulfed again by a thunderbolt of frenzied guitars. DEEP SEAT [from 03:27 to 04:12]This one’s beautiful. It’s like doldrums inbetween storms. I’ve got a friend who says that when listening to that bit, and if you’re deeply into it, you can actually travel “in your very own parallel time” through another dimension and hark all the way back to the early 90’s. Gotta try that. Anyway, you’ve CERTAINLY noticed I’m not too competent a music critic, but I’m sure that’s much more realistic than any NME review :). Just trying out a whole new subject… PS: Alistair, you still didn’t tell us precisely WHAT did you expect this site to be about, but all your suggestions will be welcome. PS2: Tuomas, great move! There’s not a single reason why you should be looked down upon by any well-meaning person for wearing a Swervie t-shirt.PS3: GarlicSoul, if you find out about that Swervie footage, please let me know, I don’t have anything to trade but I’ve been putting $ome aside just for that.

Comment: just saw the ‘Doves’ at the Crocodile here in Seattle last night. Killer show! When I closed my eyes it felt like I was at a Swervedriver gig .. It was a total SWD homage, the guitar tones were so tasty, bouncing all over the place. Interesting multi-media feel w/ the random short movie clips ala Bhole Surfers.. Swervedriver played this same club back in June 98′ and wreaked similar havoc on the place. It’s small and the sound just roars. Two of the best shows I’ve seen in a few years. Time for SWD to get back out on the road I think..

Comment: I noticed someone wondering about J Mascis, many posts ago. I think Mascis’ new solo album is great! I was relieved because I didnt really dig the last Dino one, too much. Kevin Shields participated in the recording sessions for a few weeks (though it doesnt clarify what he may have done and on which songs he would have done it on), but Mascis plays pretty much everything by himself. A possible official Swervedriver live album? That sounds great. Speaking of live Swerve, I would love to get my hands on some live Swervedriver footage, if anyone is interested in a possible trade. I remember seeing some boot video with mostly clips of 92/93 era Swervedriver songs, but I was too slow…errr…broke to get it. My e-mail is garlicsoul@aol.com, if you want to inquire about a trade. Mind you that I have absolutely NO live Swervedriver stuff to trade, so hopefully I will have other bands that may suffice.

Comment: The pedals shirt was beautiful, I remember when I ordered it way back in 93 it was sold out. The fx thing seems to me quite symbolic of Swervedriver (more than other dreampop bands). I remember once this NME review about a Swervie gig (in Amsterdam I guess) where the reporter said he’d never seen so many boxes onstage (he actually COUNTED 14 of them). Jez, what d’you think about reissuing that one? Tuomas, odd reputation!? Comment: I put a Swervedriver page on my new website (in french of course). I just found back an article in a french magazine (in 1998) talking about the 99th dream release, if somebody is interested, I can try to translate it in english but it won’t be easy because to describe the album they had to use a more elaborate vocabulary than they usually do(I just thought that Swervedriver is above their intellectual level)… But (at your demand) it should help me to speak english better than I actually do so I’m ready to do it. Maybe in your review section Art ?

Perhaps I could seel it on ebay, but then again I can’t see many people being interested in wearing a holey rag that has my drunken, teenage perma-stench branded deep inside of it. Comment: Yeah Paulo it’s a good one. I love how they tend to embrace Espanol at times. I regret not ever buying the old shirt that had the effects pedals. That one is long gone I’m afraid.

Comment: Hey, Erik, I’ve still got that shirt myslef, and mine’s pretty worn out too (although there’s something particularly strange about the silk screen that won’t fade out). I have four swervie shirts but that one is by far my favourite. And it fits me well, the others are all XLarge. Gee, I could cut two overcoats out of that Raise shirt…

Comment: Eliminate the need for Swervedriver to tour again? Chris I think you’ve been partying a bit too hard mate. Kik, I think that Kylie is now Mrs.Cave. I could be wrong, but that’s the word I got. Sorry about your shirt. I still have my “Jesus ama los Swervies” shirt from the ’93 tour. It’s got more holes than a donut factory because I wore it so much back then. Hope all is well. -E

Comment: Dave, don’t worry about the video – i mean do worry about it. what i mean is that it’s not as if i sit by the letterbox everyday waiting for it (just on weekdays) oh well, you know what i mean, take your time. Oh and Kik, i’m sorry to hear that you spilt red wine down your swervie t-shirt, but here’s an idea…why don’t you dye it red!? (or at least pour wine down the rest of it) thus eliminating the need for swervedriver to tour again!?!?! My god i’m acting like a madman – ignore everything i’ve said.

Comment: ‘cheffing & blinding’, featuring brazil as produced by the svelte jez swervie is released …. TODAY!!!..available through amazon.co.uk i believe. does this count as a swervie rarity?!…our track does actually feature the swd bass drum, snare drum and tambourine, so it’s the next best thing to a new swd release..arf! arf!..ok i stop now.

Comment: Dave Ashton- I’ve finally started doing the tabs you asked for. Sorry that it’s running a bit late but I have been a bit taken up with things like splitting up with girlfriends and getting out of my face to compensate. You know, run of the mill stuff.
