Comment: Paul, I actually grew up in Williamsburg. I had a lot of friends that lived in the Hampton/Poqouson area. I knew Sean from Germ Flux and from Nobody, I knew Maynard(I think that was his name, he and I used to drink together at Phillies, in the Blues) and Lisa, whom I must agree is quite beautiful. I see her pretty often here in Richmond. Small world, eh? I’ll tell Lisa you said Hi when I see her again. I would be most appreciative if you bought a Dragstrip CD. The best way would probably be to go through our label’s site: www.belugarecords.com How are things for your band? Hopefully all is well for the Monsters. Have any of you Swervies out there heard the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club? I was introduced to them recently and think they sound fucking great. They’re kind of like the Jesus and Mary Chain, Love and Rockets, and the Ramones all in one. Sensual Jim Reid-esque vocals, fuzzed guitars w/ lots of layered echo, and brilliantly simple song writing. I think some of you out there would really get into them. Take care all, -E

Comment: Hey Erik, I have to get to another one of your shows but I’ve always got something planned everytime you guys come to town. I’ll be on a train coming back from Rhode Island May 5th. It’s my first time traveling that far north. I am going to go to New York for the 1st time, I’m pretty excited. My first band ever was actually with some of the younger siblings of Baby Farm people, but they’re all assholes now. I saw some interesting things at the Germ Flux house though, naked bands setting the room on fire and the like. I was in Nobody for a split second in high school, did you ever hear of them? Lisa F was my favorite photography model when I was in college cause she’s so beautiful.Erik how about posting your cd ordering info on this site, I’ll buy one. Are you originally from Hampton? Ok gotta run. Bicycle!

Comment: Yeh Ghostie O. I saw Swervedriver twice at it. I love the place!! First time was during the Mezcal Head tour and it just happened to coenside with Mushroom season, which was nice. They played before the release of the album but I had managed to catch some songs on the Evening Session. They did Duress as an encore and I very nearly creamed my pants which would’nt have been very pleasent on mushies. King Tuts is famed however for being where Oasis got signed to Creation but we’ll let that one go. Anyone who listened to Adams acoustic set, Last Train to Satansville is Fucking amazing in’it! And that one about the people falling into the sea that never got released.

That club was shite, but I saw some good bands there, Sebadoh, the Melvins, etc. Do they still have shows at the old Baby Farm house on Armistead? I remember that was the “place to be” for awhile. I’m going to attempt listening to Adam’s acoustic performance. Everybody have good weekends, -E

Comment: erik… i missed out on seeing labradford with low. low played someplace else in mahattan the same night that i saw labradford play. the to bands met up after that show and did the rest of the tour together. i feel like i was cheated. mark nelson did a set as pan american in the opening slot. i really like the first pan american cd, but it was really boring live. bjork was in atendance at that show. she was sitting on the floor during pan american, about three feet away from me. she snaps her gum… on another note, i got the new mogwai last night and it is wonderful! more vocal tracks then usual… can’t wait to see them again in june!

Comment: Labradford live…that has to be a cool show. I would love to hear them play ‘Everlast’ live. For some strange reason, this makes me want to go listen to some Durutti Column..lol. I really liked Pan American’s first CD. Anyone have any of their more recent CD’s? Also, any light on the ‘announcement’ OTW over at the TS site? Man, we have been way too long without any new SWD material. “Dreamin’ number 99, get me to the world on time.’ Take care Swervies-SD

That’s when I last saw them, which was also a few months ago. I’m not sure if that tour is still going on, but I’d love to see them hit the road again.

Comment: Tuomas, I’d love to have a T-Star CD, but I know that you’re busy, so it’s no hurry. Let me know if you need any $$ for postage. Kik, thanks for sending the LaBradford link. It’s good to see some Richmond boys making good. Word around town is that some of their music may be used for an upcoming Oliver Stone movie. That would rule!!! (depending on the movie of course) Paul, tell Kelly that I said thanks for the support and that she really shouldn’t be scared to approach me. If Dragstrip fans only knew what a dork I was, our audience would probably be cut in half. We’ll be in your area again on May 5th (Cogan’s of course) Hope all is well in Hampton. The same for all you other folks in England, Oz, Finland, Belgium, Canada, San Paulo, Chicago, NYC, Space wherever… -E

Comment: This is sad that so many french or belgian rock bands sing in english, they usually speak french but they sing in english and then we wonder why American crap is so often on top of charts here. We’d better sing in french to promote this language. A little bit like english or American bands that will sing in french, that’s not frequent I think. Even if it’s not sure that they will still sell in english speaking countries. But sure that the European Union should give more attention to that if they don’t want to be always second behind the United States. I think that music is one of the biggest exportation income for the USA. If we decrease this income, the american Dollar will not be so high-rated compared to soon-coming Euro. Sorry, that becomes totally out of the subject but I had to say it.

Comment: There’s a new band out called MELLOW, and the album is supposed to be a cross between Syd Barret, Nick Drake, and especially The Beatles. I bought it yesterday, and it’s quite amazing. It’s a French group, but they sing in English. I think Swervedriver people might like this.

Gene Simmons was on Ben Stein last night and he said he’s had sex with thousands and thousands of women and he takes a picture of every one, and that Kiss is over cause he’s too old to pretend he’s a rock ‘n roller anymore, and now he’s going to produce television shows.

Comment: Actually, kik, Jedi IS a real religion, no kidding! George Lucas knew his shit when he wrote star wars, its full of symbolism that reflects historical fact. The Djedi (jedi) were an Osirian sect in ancient egypt (c. Middle Kingdom). They were mystics & practised what was considered magical feats (including changing the molecular structure of objects, astral projection etc). The light saber thing represents the ‘missing’ phallus of Osirus, around which the whole Djed culture revolves. There has been a resurgence in this ‘cult’ recently (unrelated to ‘star wars’), instigated by a bunch of people (mostly US new-agers) who believe the cosmis age is about to enter a new phase, or so-called ‘golden dawn’. However, no, i wont be putting down jedi as my religion in the census, i might instead put ‘go fuck yourself you pisspoor nwo stooges’ or something like… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Comment: Tuomas, yeah man Texas is full of Surprises. It defintely has its fair share of Rednecks, just like any other place in America, but that state (regardless of George Fuckhead Bush) has produced some pretty cool things. “And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead” is from Texas as well, in case you haven’t heard them. Steve and Chris, thanks for expressing the honest opinions of the “Magnet”. I had pretty much figured they wouldn’t be worth seeing. As much as I love their influences, like Blue Cheer, Sabbath, MC5 & the Stooges, Monster Magnet seems to not be to hittin’ of a band. It’s hard for a band to fuse Rock and Pyschedelia convincingly these days. That’s why “Raise” was such an amazing album. It had the rough Stooges edge, but definitely took it in a way that no one else has. Incidently Tuomas, I thought that T-Star was an excellent psych/rock band… Talk at “y’all” later. -E

Comment: hey erik… monster magnet is acctually from the town where i live (red bank, nj.) when i was 15 i took a few guitar lessons from the guy who taught their bassist. but i digress. i worked in a record store a few years ago with a guy who was friends with them so they wre played in the store constantly and they pretty much suck. their music is boring, their lyrics are trite, and the vocals are just plain aweful. real cheese rock… at least that’s my oppinion.

Comment: Oh yeah, I also meant to ask if any of you have ever seen that goofy band, Monster Magnet. They’re coming to my neck of the woods pretty soon. When I was in high school I dug their first album because it was really psychedelic. I haven’t paid much attention to them since then and was wondering if they were still worth seeing (seems doubtful). It’s strange to think that a band that uses Satan as their schtick toured with Swervedriver, but I’ve got to say that I’d take the Magnet over fucking Samiam anyday. How the fuck Swerve ended up playing with them is beyond me. Hope all is well -E

Comment: Have any of you heard this band from Austin, Tx called 7% Solution? A friend of mine a few years ago told me to check them out because they supposedly sounded like Swervedriver. Well, they don’t really sound like our boys, but they’re still a pretty cool band, echoed guitars, harmonized feedback, etc. There seem to be a lot of Shoegazers down in Texas. I guess it’s an extension of the 13th Floor Elevator legacy, not too shabby… Later all, -E

Comment: Ian and Bertrand, I dig what I’ve heard of Sigur Ros. They remind me of Verve’s earlier music with the exception of the female vocals, cool guitar sound. Paul, the CD release show went very well, thanks for asking. We sold about 40 CDs and the crowd seemed to be really into us. Our friends from Raleigh, the Cherry Valence, played before we did. Holy shit, did they ever make us work extra hard. They’re a hard band to follow, possibly the best Rock and Roll band in the world. Imagine the MC5, James Brown, Black Flag, and Deep Purple thrown into a vego-matic, fucking fantastic. Hope all is well with the rest of you Swerves, -E

Comment: hey art… that is a great point. i think a band has to know when to call it an album (or an EP for that matter.) two of my favorite albums are acctually EPs… ‘EP+2’ by MOGWAI, and ‘SLOW RIOT FOR NEW ZERO KANADA’ by godspeed you black emperor… they both only about a half hour long, but they are two of the most moving and powerful recordings i’ve ever heard… a great example of an album that didn’t know when to quit (and i’ll probably get some flack for this) is catherine wheel’s ‘happy days.’ some great songs by a wonderful band, but some songs that really should have been b-sides…

Comment: Steve, I agree that the CD is an altogether different thing and I really do like the concept of continuous play. I guess what I was trying to express is that I think bands feel compelled to record 74 minutes worth of music. For less prolific bands, this means some great songs and [at least] a few crap ones. Well, I just assume not ever hear the crap. After compiling the new Mogwai release from various mp3 sources, I was pleased to find approximately 40 minutes of pure gold. Nothing but keepers.

Comment: art… just read a comment that posted earlier and i wanted to respond. although the advent of the compact disk did kill to concept to the album side, it created the ability to produce a more fluid recording on the whole… i think that the continuity of a cd more then makes up for the lack of individual album sides. to me, listening to vinyl is like listening to two seperate recordings. this is not always a bad thing… don’t get me wrong i love vinyl and i think it has its own charm (i am still one of ‘the few, the proud, the owners of a record collection,’) but i am not ready to morn the death of the album side, especially when more and more great bands are releasing their recording of vinyl anyway… later… steve.

Comment: Bands should be able to sell music by any means possible. Its about the only thing that will keep them alive now as its pretty obvious you cant rely on record companies (look at the trouble Swervedriver had). But it is a special thing when you get an album for the sake of a few songs only to discover it is everything its cracked up to be. Doesnt happen very often but when it does it is a very special thing indeed. They’ll be the albums you’ll have with you for the rest of your life.

Comment: And, BTW, I do agree that bands should start selling their songs one at a time. The CD completely killed the “album side” format, so why bother trying to create a complete listening experience. 74 minutes is just too much space to try and fill up with great music. There’s bound to be some filler somewhere. Frankly, I can’t see how bands came up with 30 – 35 miniutes back in the vinyl days…

Comment: Why can’t you, or any other band, seem to get it together to sell mp3’s of your songs online? Someone like me, who would never buy the whole album just for a couple songs, would spend a buck a song anyway, and it costs close to nothing to offer the service… I guess I’ll just have to get it off Napster, and when Napster goes down, Napigator or whatever comes next. Too bad, I’d like to buy Duel. But I’m not going to spend $10 + tax and shipping and handling and then wait a month for it.

Comment: Tortoise is a two bass, rythmic, noise experimental, mathy kind of thing out of Chicago. Definite Thrill Jockey stuff. They started out pretty ambient, but have lately turned to more Trans Am, Atari sounding kind of stuff. I imagine they’d be good to see live. Art, that’s strange that you mentioned the Afghan Wigs. 1965 has been one of my favorite things to listen to lately. It’s funny because I used to lividly hate them. Typical that a band’s music starts hitting it for me in a posthumous manner.

Comment: Have you guys heard Mogwai’s version of the Spacemen 3’s “Honey”? Very cool. Swervedriver always played cover songs like “Jesus” and “In the City” really well. I could defintely get into hearing them do a Spacemen 3 tune. Something like “Revolution” (even though Mudhoney did that) or “Che” (even though that’s a Suicide song) Goddamn, now that I think about it, everyone covers the Spacemen 3. Maybe that’s why Swervedriver never touched any of their tunes. They should just keep busting out some of their own I suppose.

Unless all the band members relocate, or unless they manage to come up with a trans-Atlantic working relationship, I’d think it would logistically be too difficult for them to continue. Oh well.
