Comment: I’ll be there for the clones – just as soon as I figger out some of Jez’ licks. Or how to play the edit(?) in the break of “Why Say Yeah”. A SWD tribute band? Hmmm….. Let’s hope the band can stave that off with a new record. Well, it’s off to score provisions and smiles for a Labor Day weekend….

Comment: Ian, I think you’re referring to the Nuggets compilation. The long awaited Volume 2 just came out within the past year. It’s dedicated soley to British garage rockers whereas the first volume was Americans. Amazing music regardless of which side of the Atlantic it was concevied. That’s great that you’ve got a 6 degree speration from Marc Bolan!! I would be heaven if I could feast my eyes on his guitar and amp. I really get into things like that ’cause I’m a total rock geek. When I was Memphis recently, I was like, “Oh my God!! Sam and Dave, Otis Redding, and Elvis probably played on this street a million times back in the 60’s!!” My girlfriend just laughed at me the whole time. Amyway, it’s really good to know there’s a Swervehead teaching music technology over in Europe. I rest a little easier at night now… Paulo, I hate to admit it, but I’ve really lost track of the Lily’s releases. The last one I purchased was a purple and black cover that had the song, “Any Several Sunday.” That ep is great. Sounds like a totally drugged and blissed out Beatles. Sorry you’ve been having trouble trying to hear us, try one of these links: www.dragstripsyndicate.com www.belugarecords.com Thanks for checking us out. I hope all of you have good weekends. Vodka Sonic proof is sounding pretty good right about now. -E

Comment: hi paulo…i see you mentioned the name of my little band of merry men, ‘brazil’…if you’re interested our website is www.wearebrazil.co.uk and i think you can link to some sounds from there..if not we have stuff on www.mp3.com and www.peoplesound.com …we don’t have much of a swervie sound (though we’ve just recorded one that’s jazzmaster-tastic and more than a little swervey!!). jez produced the track ‘school daze’ and has done a couple of others that aren’t on the web as yet…they’re really cool and no doubt i’ll advertise them when they’re up!!…right – i’m off for some terra diablo action cos my boss isn’t here today!

Comment: WOOOHOOO!!! A new Toshack Highway CD!!! Thats made my weekend!!! And with the knowledge that part of the name has a link to the mighty Liverpool FC I love them even more. Trik – got yer mail. Cheers for getting in touch. Hope I’ll hear from you soon and have a good weekend!! Sundog – I know what you mean about the press thing. I am actualy on a mission from god to bring back shoegazing but Im always reluctant to mention it because of the sort of stigma attached. Bloody press!!! Carsten – where can I hear this Swervie cover? Is it on any sites? My sympathies are with everyone taking exams. I just got a new job teaching Music Technology at Ayr College so having crossed over to the other side I feel partly responsible….sorry & good luck!!. Erik (RVA) – A while ago I got a copy of a compilation CD with all that type of stuff on it. I’ll be fxxked if I can remember the name of it but it was full of old 60’s stuff I’d never heard. Some of them were so ahead of they’re time it is incredible. They sound like Garage rock. Realy rough. I’ll find out the name off the guy that lent me it and get it to you. Also I was in a Rockabilly/Cramps style band a few years ago and we went down to a guy called Boz Boorer’s studio in London. He plays for Morrisey now but I think he used to be in Johns Children. He had loads of old posters for gigs about the place and…get this…Mark Bourlands old Vamp Amp stack that appeared on an album cover and his old SG!! He also collected old pedals and had draws literaly full of stuff like big muffs, origional Tube Sceamers and Theramons (dont think thats spelt right) and stuff. Must go now before I electricute myself due to the dribble dripping onto my keyboard. Have a good weekend folks!!!

Comment: “Behind the Scenes”‘s perhaps the best song on 99th, it’s pure, traditional, stylish wah-wah-pedalling Swervedriver. The long intro seems to start where “Sci-Flyer” took off (you can actually play them in sequence like they were a two-piece work). Notice how Adam’s voice takes on a different texture as he says “…million m-i-l-e-s..” (he’s singing much better on that album than on the others, adn especially if compared to the older live recordings, where he definitely strays offkey on some songs). Can’t wait for the new ep with the acoustic version of Hitcher (love that song too…). Erik, lilys rules (do you have “Brief History”? Would like to know if it’s worth looking for it…I only have Eccsame and the other one with the flowery cover. “Songs for the Soon to be Departed” is great too). I like the suggestion of having everyone’s band name+site compiled so we can check ’em out easier (I’ve been hitting words like Terra Diablo, Brazil,Dragstrip Syndicate onto my Limewire to no avail so far). Well, time to get (as Adam used to say) “the creative juices flowing”… — “walking dowstairs sideways, vod-ka so-nic proooooof…”

Comment: Ghost, I’m only going to one CMJ show that I know of: Alice Texas @ Sidewalk Cafe on the 13th. Is there anything that you think I shouldn’t miss? Let me know. Kik, the more swervies in NYC the better! Good luck!! Adam’s acoustic version of The Hitcher is amazing. I almost didn’t even recognize it when I first heard it here in NYC. Can’t wait for the Spacebaby CD. BTW, I understood the name Toshack Highway to be a reference to John Toshack, a former FA Cup star with the Liverpool club. I know Adam is all into soccer- um, I mean football. I don’t know what the Highway part means except maybe that ongoing obsession with driving…

Comment: LOL Fester, wasn’t meant as a burn, just an opinion. I remember the early 90’s where many of the bands we like were dumped on by the media and now with the media raving over RH, it’s sort of like, ‘Where were you then?’ ;). Thanks Erik for the Birthday Wish (It’s Spet. 24th, but I’m not rushing it..lol, I’m old enough as it is!). Ian mentioning the ‘Beta Band’ reminds of that scene from the movie ‘Hi Fidelity’. There was a record store I always used to hang out in (knew the people who worked there) and that movie just captured the atmosphere of it perfectly..lol. Which is how I got my vinyl copy of ‘Dots and Loops’ by Stereolab. Man, everytime I am at these boards, you guys send me off in directions (music listening wise) I haven’t been in awhile. Thanks! 🙂 P.S.-New Toshack Highway! Cool. BTW, does anyone know where the name ‘Toshack Highway’ comes from? Just wondering. Dream well swervies, the music is always there.

Comment: Check out the song from the Factory. I swear to God, they were a mid 60’s shoegazer band all the way. Also give John’s Children a listen, that was Marc Bolan’s first band. ANd while your at it, give it up to one of Oz’s finest, the Easybeats. Ok, I’m gonna shut up now. -E

Comment: OK, disciples of Swerve…. on “Behind the Scenes…”, the lyrics go “…score your provisions / score a smile /__________ for a million miles…” Can anyone fill the blank? I swear I saw it on one of the links, but after 45 minutes of looking again, I’ll be damned if I can find it. One of my favorite SWD lyrics, but my short term memory damage rears its ugly head again…. BTW, I’m still kicking myself for not being able to check out everyones’ music on here…! No machine at home (yet) and no speakers or sound card at work (at least it’s speedy)… I’ve only been on the board here since May, but just as I suspected, all you fellow SWD freaks have some tasty tastes in music. And are friendly to boot! So excuse me for running off at th’ keyboard like this….

Which means I am able to listen to all the great music being featured on this board. There is no doubt that the boys from Diablo have got skills. Ghost, very solid. Her vocals are rock candy baby. Erik, your next, but for some reason the Beluga radio link ain’t happening for me. I’ve still options though, and the Syndicate will be heard. Happy Birthday to the Dapper Dan Man Bertrand and all the other swervies growing up in Swervonia. Mercury Rev release date is approaching. Heard the previews and all I can say is Yummy! Gettin’ burned by the Sundog-ouch! Speaking of which, I’ve got a CD in the oven as I type. This rocks! Peace my brother. Cheers!

Comment: Hey kids! I finally made it back home to Richmond. It was a blast on the road with the band/girlfriend. I think she and I saw every nook and cranny of Tennessee, from the Cherokee Indian Reservation in the Smokies to the Rock and Soul of Beale Street in Memphis. It was amazing being in on the street where Otis Redding, Wilson Picket, and Booker T used to rock out. Good times, man. I missed reading the message board regularly. I want to wish belated happy birthday wishes to Kik, Trik, Art, Bertrand, and Zach(?) Sundog(?). So many of you had b-days while I was gone I lost track. Thanks also to all of you for your advice on the Swerve songs for my driving compilation. I ended up saying fuck it and brought Mezcal Head in its entirety. Paul, excellent news about your new band!! I can’t wait to give it a listen, I shall do so soon. If you’re friends with those Astropop kids then you should hook up with Skywave (www.killerrockandroll.com) Good people, great band. Paulo, that’s great that you’re a Lily’s fan. My friend, Mike, is their bassist. He was just offered to be the bassist for Will Oldham’s band since Kurt is taking some time off to be a dad for a little while. Mike’s going to be touring Europe soon with Will Oldham getting paid good money. Christ, I hate that fucker. But anyway, it’s good to see people paying respects to the Lilys, Husker Du, Bill Hicks, and “O Brother Where Art Thou?”. Steve, that’s cool you got to see Mudhoney. I’m sure they rocked as usual. I hope all of you are well. Love you guys, it’s good to be back (but it sucks starting classes again…) -E

If you want some more stuff send your address to terradiablo@woodstock.com and Ill get some off to you. Theres no much of an Indi scene going on over here right now though there’s some good bands about like the Beta Band, Billy Mahoney, and stuff but its kind of lacking that sort of ‘tribal’ “we all listen to…” sort of aspect. I guess there’s too many different styles now. Give me back 1991 I say. Happy Birthday Bertrand you young whippersnapper you and one last thing. ‘MON U REDS’!!! champions league here we come!!

Comment: It was the english version and it was subtitled in french. I always watch movies in the original version(subtitled if not french), whatever the language is. The dubbing sucks too often. Exemple: In english, they scream, in french, they just talk louder, so almost all the power of the dialogue is lost. But why this question? For the ol’ accent?

Comment: Ian, How ingnorant of me you have only been speaking of your band Terra Diablo on here for a year right? When i clicked on that link it took me to some Dj page so thats what I thought you were trying to show me, but after some poking around I found your band. Let me say I think it’s excellent. And that also answers my own question about Brit Indie. I love the guitar bends and super drum fills on Levitation, and you have a great vocal range, deep and raspy but getting those highs in there too. How can I get a TD cd? And not to offend with comparisons as you said earlier, but this may be the very first Brittish EMO i’ve ever heard. Are you aware of that whole movement? So when are you playing the States?

When I write to my penpal in Bristol and I ask her about something I like such as: MBV, SWD, ride, lush, Pale Saints (all the shoegazers ) Etc… she always tell me that’s Indie music. Is there a Brittish Indie scene going on right now and if so can you name some bands? And is there a music show on that BBC that plays the Indie music? thanks

Comment: 1)I might have posted this before as a potential SWD cover… Fleetwood Macs’ “Hypnotized”, from the Mystery To Me LP. SWD could slow it down, turn it up and make it a major slow jam, a la “Duress”… 2)Art, Bill Hicks is a comedian, no? Guess I could answer myself and click on the amazon.com logo down over there… 3) Billie – I scored one of those very same shirts at one of the Cabaret Metro shows here – it gets better treatment than some of my Sunday best… 4)Sundog – I’ll admit the UFO idea came up after my usual weekend warrior debauchery of smoke & barley pops… actually I’ve thought up whole lists of shit for the boys to consider, but promptly forget it come Monday morning…

Comment: Haven’t been here in a few weeks, definitely a lot happening. Erik, WTG on the tour and hooking up with Albini! Any ideas on the time frame you guys will be entering the studio with him? Dan’l, SWD playing UFO’s ‘Love-to-Love’ would be cool. I would also love to hear a SWD rendition of ‘Lights Out’ and being an aviation nut, I can already picture a video with Spitfires, Hurris, 109s and He-111s, drums and a lot of guitars!..lol. As for RH, I like some of what they have recorded. I think most of the people who absolutely ‘swoon’ over them, never heard MBV, Ride, Slow dive, The Boo Radley’s (Giant Steps), Blur, and all the other early to mid 90’s great pop music out of England. I think I need to go listen to ‘In Ribbons’, by the plae Saints now. Oh yeah, Erik, a little late now, but for a `driving tape the girlfriend can deal with, with a SWD song’ I would have to pick ‘Stellar Capris’ off of 99th Dream or if it has to be shorter in duration, ‘These Times’. Take care everyone, good to see many fo you with ‘positive circumstances’. Dream well.

Comment: But that’s enough about RH… Okay maybe one more note, I tend to like the new stuff better than the early poppy stuff. That’s all I have to say. Bert, I think if Mogwai doesn’t immediately suck you in, it will win you over time. I have a history of loving slow, repetitive music makers like Velvet Underground, Flipper, Loop, Main, Magnog, Codeine, etc.. so, Mogwai fit like a glove. And of those other bands I only got to see Codeine live until Mogwai, which was pure bliss. Zach, I’m in still NYC. Way too hot to even think of going to NOLA this time of year! Trik, my b’day is this Friday 8/24. I’ll be spinning Raise, Mezcal Head, and 99th Dream at a bar uptown (check www.jrfunk.com for details) and chanting “Lager, lager, lager!” in my head at the same time. Baptiste, good point about RH. BTW, I’m sure Loveless is in the record collection of most bands that appear on those “Best Album” lists, so therein lies the irony. To all: Jez is back from the 5th dimension and promises to have something live to listen to soon. More later…

Funny you mentioned Mogwai. I was talking to Stuart Braithwaite at the Lift to Experience gig the other week and he said they’re selling their Marshall cabs and asked if I wanted one. Only thing is they’re probably ripped to fuck but its worth a shot. If anyone is interested I could get hold of one so e-mail me. I pick up my new motor on Friday so its a weekend sitting on a hill with my guitar somewhere in Scotland for me. FREE AT LAST!!! Comment: Loveless has appeared a few times on Alternative Press lists, usually within the top twenty (Mezcal Head has been on 2 of the 3 lists I’ve seen. Once ranked 95 and the other time at 50. Both out of 100 alblums of course.) I’ve also seen Loveless appear on a top twenty list for one of the more popular guitar magazines. It was weird to see it among other albums from Van Halen and the like. That list also featured Husker Du I believe. I gotta tell ya, I miss the days when I used to turn on the dreaded “alternative” FM station in town and “Duel” or “Satansville” would come on. And being played along side Catherine Wheel, The Smashing Pumpkins, and yes, being from Toronto, the Barenaked Ladies… 🙂

Comment: Just because Radiohead didn’t become Bon Jovi when they got massive doesn’t mean we should all pat them on the back. Just because they borrowed elements from Mo Wax and Warp acts doesn’t mean we should diss them…afterall, what’s a band to do when it realises it’s gotten too big for it’s boots? U2 did the same when they immersed themselves in and borrowed elements of MBV for their Pop album. It’s just the end result(s) of Radoihead’s recent album(s) are very average, in those terms…and I think Mogwai are superior….as of course are the Swervies…..and besides Kurt Cobain really did have the last word on being angsty and fuckin pissed off! Kik’s right about the flutes though….how come Loveless never appears in any ‘Greatest Albums of all Time’ lists?

Comment: Unhappily, I can’t tell in ‘english’ what I think of Radiohead. The only thing I can do is to compare the level of modesty of Thom Yorke (why the hell do they always need to film his self-centred face/appearance?) and the one of Jimmy, Steve, Adam and Jez (Yes, I can think about (and by) something else hehe). I totally hate that guy. Art, speaking of Mogwaï, I finally bought that ‘Come on die Young’ record, listened to it ten, fifteen times and I still don’t know if I like it or not (quite usual). I find it very repetitive. But, each new time I listen to it, I prefer it. Just have to understand the feelng… I bought SY ‘Daydream Nation’ at the same time and that is what I call exciting and clever music. Wanted to ask you: Is there any precocious child (Supergifted?) in here? Just curious.

Comment: Y’know, I thought for a long time Radiohead were in that Catherine Wheel/Pumpkins/Barenaked Ladies axis… all I knew is that the dreaded “alternative” FM station in town treated them with the same amount of yucky adulation. So naturally I avoided them like the plague. Then it was “dude you gotta listen to OK Computer”… then it was a spot on Saturday Night Live. And then somebody gives me a copy of The Bends. Yeah, Radiohead has some pretty songs, but I don’t see what all the hype is about….

Comment: ::Begin RH rant:: Maybe it’s because I grew up against a backdrop of Dixieland and Brass Band Jazz that I like RH’s use of horns on these past few albums. Maybe it’s because I grew up listening to the Beach Boys that I love their use of the Theremin here as well. Perhaps it’s cool to hate RH now that they’re achieved a virtual U2-scale superstar status, but I still think that what they’re putting out is imaginative and enjoyable. Of course I worship SWD & Mogwai, but there’s still plenty of room for RH in my CD collection. ::End RH rant::

Comment: Not at all, Zach. You might want to try downloading two wonderful songs by Lilys called “Claire Hates Me” and “Dandy”. I got ’em from LimeWire last week. I THINK they’re on a record called “Brief History of Amazing Letdowns” which they say it’s Lilys at their best (It’s from their MBV-like dreampop phase). If you want to go for a full album, I’d recommend the one called “Better Can’t Make Your Life Better”. It has a 60s-ish flavour, very different from the previous records, but with BRILLIANT melodies that never sound outdated. I’m not particularly obsessed with originality, and here’s someone (heasley) who can prove you — with genius — that sometimes an imitation is not JUST an imitation.

Comment: Erik – Yeah I dig MOTO. It’s short for Masters Of The Obvious, one of my favorite band names. Guitarist/singer Paul started out with himself and a totally foxy chick drummer named Beck, touring in a Chevy Chevette and putting out a slew of 7 inchers. (you don’t have to be a)”Dick About It” is my favorite MOTO jam. As of late Paul has branched out to include a bassist, and added more power to his pop. Very unpretentious and refreshing, like the Jam. “…away from the numbers / that’s where I’ll be….”

Ex-tool bassist Paul D’Amour’s solo project. This is certainly a VERSATILE musician. Try the realplayer sample from “backworlds” at cdnow.com. and you’ll get the picture; 3) LILYS: Selected EP. No need to listen before buying, this guy Kurt Heasley is surely one of the most talented out there, I’d love to see him working with Kevin Shields.

I~ve got a bunch of friends heading for leeds just as i write these words, lineup this time~s very good, featuring some Classics such as P.J. I can~t go this time but will book my ticket as soon as I get to know the lineup for next year. Hopefully the Swervies will be there. And they~ll play so hard they~ll sink the isle off the map…

Erik, life sounds too sweet for you right now. Albini and all. I saw Radiohead and I like them just as much as I did before, which is lots. I think they are a talented lot that is not held hostage by or afraid of their celebrity status. Plus, there’s hardly a radio format song on the new album, which is a little ironic. Whatever, to each his/her own. The Bends still rocks most every other non-Swerve album of the same period.

I have collected alot of articles and interviews with Albini and I like all of his thoughts about the industry and life in general. And I have read all about his obsessive behavior when designing and building that studio. Congrats dude and have a blast.I am exited for you. I myself have hooked up with a band I am very excited about. Its got a female singer and female guitar player they have like 40 songs and I really dig their stuff, (i will be playing 2nd guitar and backup vocals)Its kind of hard to pinpoint but it has a Nirvana meets early 10,000 Maniacs. But we need a drummer, they’ve already auditioned 3 in the three weeks I’ve known them and they all want to play Limp Bizkut, so if you know any drummers in the hampton roads area let me know we need one immediately. Also Erik, have you heard Astropop 3 from Va Beach? I am now absolutely in love with Angelique. Alright man, keep us posted. Bicycle!

Comment: Hey kids, got a question for all of you. Even though I just returned from a road trip with the band, my girlfriend and I are about to head on another one. I’m putting together a “driving mix” for the two of us and was going to throw on a Swerve song, but in taking all the other music into consideration, I probably have room for only one of their tunes. She doesn’t dislike Swervedriver, but she’s not nearly the fan that I am. What one song do you think could win someone over? I was thinking either, “Duel”, “Change is Gonna Come”, “Son of Mustang Ford” or “The Hitcher”. Lemme know what you think. Hope the drink is treating you Canadians well. My best friend (who’s Canadian) and I did some drinking ourselves last night. We went to a local pub called “Penny Lane”. Yep, just like the Beatles tune. The two guys who own it are some Scousers who used to work at the Cavern Club when the Beatles still played the Liverpool club circuit. Needless to say, those guys have some interesting stories to tell. As for the Radiohead thing, I must admit that I think they’re severely overrated. But anyway, Jesus, what a gabber I am today. Hope all of you are well. The weekend is upon us!! Steve, I’ll be staying with my folks in Williamsburg tomorrow if you want to try calling there. Remember their number? Talk at y’all later. -E

Comment: Hey Erik – sorry I missed the show dood. Like on the Brady Bunch, “something suddenly came up”. Good to hear the Wicker World experience treated you well. His Royal Skinniness is a pleasure to work with from what I hear. Someday I’d like to hear my drums recorded with some of the crazy microphones he’s collected….

Comment: Hey all!! Yes, I’m back from the road. It was such a great time. All the shows went really well, particularly in Chicago and Ann Arbor. It was nice to actually come back WITH a little bit of money instead of sporting the “Jesus, I hope we at least break even” ethic. In Chicago, we had the pleasure of meeting Steve Albini, who is scheduled to record our next album in December (if all goes well). He showed us his studio and it was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. It was 3 floors, with 5 five separate sound rooms. There was any kind of recording equipment imaginable, and the walls were made of adobe bricks shipped up from New Mexico, fucking incredible. Sweet times indeed. I missed reading the message board while I was out. Sounds as if everyone is doing well. Ian, congrats on your radio performace. I shall be checking it out later on. Zach, glad you survived the move. Kik, you should become a pro surfer! It’s funny you mentioned that Weezer lyric. We were rocking out to that song while driving home yesterday. I guess everyone else is gearing up for the Radiohead shows. My housemates were supposed to go the one in Centerville, Va., but it was rained out. Tough luck for the folks who bought their tickets on Ebay. Steve, if all goes according to our plans, we’ll be touring again this spring with the Cherry Valence. Hopefully we’ll make it down to Austin to see you. Hope everyone is all right. Good to be home again, whooo!!!! -E

Comment: I’ve discovered Gomez in a big way. Great band. I remember months ago I suggested that Swervie should do a cover of the Beatle’s “Getting Better”. Well stupid, missed-the-bus, Johnny-come-lately me didn’t realize that the boys from Gomez have already covered it. And I must have seen that microsoft(?)commercial a million times! Anyway, I’ve got a better Beatle’s cover they should do – “She Said” off of Revolver. There, now I feel better. Hope everyone is doing well. Outside of Radiohead/Beta Band at bullshit Barrie Park, there’s not a whole lot going on music wise up here. Swervie, where are you?!!

You should be able to hear it buy going to the BBC Radio 1 web site, looking up the Evening Session and then going to Session in Scotland. It will be aired between 8 and 10pm British time. I dont know what that will be in everyone elses country but any feedback from it would be most welcome and I would be most honoured if anyone take the time out to have a wee listen. Oh yes, and fave Swervie lyric. “And when the dawn begins to creep, sunlight finds you in a heap, and how you wish that you could sleep” Describes my best Swervedriver listening experienses perfectly.

It’d be cool to talk live with a Swerve freak from outside my circle of friends (Lisa, you out there, you corn-huskin’ mama?) As for lyrics, I’ve posted some of my standouts already, and now with Net access I’m learning more (any more lyrics out there besides Kidneyboys’ site?) The lyrics to The Birds hit home for me… pretty much describes how I felt at 18… and now, as well. Come to think of it, Adam hits home a lot. And Jez’ work, too. And Stephen.
