Date: Fri Nov 30 19:33:22 2001 Name: Fester City/State/Country: Toronto Comment: Yeah, just got in from work and heard the bad news. I’ve been a Beatles fan all of my life, but it wasn’t till I got a little bit older that I realized that it was Harrison’s stuff that hit me the most. Always remembered the McCartney story where Sinatra declared that “Something” was his favourite Lennon/McCartney tune. Says a lot about what he had to go through. “Bluejay Way” is a fav of mine too. “Here Comes the Sun”, and “Long, Long, Long” are also near and dear. A real shame, but that’s what it is. Cheers to George.

Date: Fri Nov 30 13:03:56 2001 Name: Erik City/State/Country: RVA Comment: George Harrison was by far my favorite Beatle. He wasn’t obsessed with the Beatlemania limelight and always lived life according to his own terms. Songs like “The Inner Light” and “Bluejay Way” testify that he was an inventive musician who wasn’t afraid to explore new demensions, even his bandmates didn’t get as “far out” as George. He was always searching for inner peace. I think now he’s found it, but I’ll miss just knowing that he’s a part of this world. R.I.P… Mr. Harrison. -E

The band then abbreviated their name to simply Quickspace to avoid being mistaken for Quiksave Superstore, a popular supermarket chain in the UK, rather amusingly.
Date: Thu Nov 29 18:59:19 2001 Name: Erik City/State/Country: RVA Comment: I gotta question for you folks overseas. Does anyone remember Th’ FaithHealers and Moonshake? I had the pleasure of seeing both of those bands for their first show ever in America (it was at William and Mary College in 1992, I was 17 at the time). My question is, what the hell happened to them? I know Margaret from Moonshake started Laika, but I haven’t heard anything about them in awhile, and Th’ Faithhealers just dropped off the face of the earth. I still really enjoy Moonshake’s first few Eps they did for Creation, but I lost track of their later releases (I didn’t like them as much after the girl split the band). Laika was a good, but they were no early Moonshake. And Th’ Faithhealers, “Lido” record… man, if you guys never heard that album, try finding it, (even though the bassist for the band dissed Swervedriver. I asked him if he listened to Swerve and he said, “I try not to”). But anyway, they were two great British bands from a magical era and I was just curious as to what became of them. -E

I missed ’em twice when they played in Rio the last coupla years and I don’t want any of you to regret that unforgivable mistake as I do.I’ll try to make it to the Trail of Dead show next week at a local venuw and see if it alleviates my sorrow…:The lucky bs from Sciflyer heard Adam play the homonym song with a dedication to them, WoW! I listened to their stuff available at MP3.com and it’s pretty cool, “instrumental indie” like Whitford, another good band found at Mp3.com).PS2: I listened to a coupla tunes by Death Cab, very good stuff, but right now Mr. Malkmus’ topping my list of lo-fi favorites (whatever that mean…) with GBV as first runner up…until I get a copy of that new four-track recording by Mr. Franklin, of couuurse…Cya…(“Here’s to shuttin up, at least until the wheels are off the ground….” pah pah rarah…)

Current listening Faves: “I Believe” by Stevie Wonder, “Teenage Rebel” by the Pink Faeries, “All Around Her” by Oneida, “Requiem for John Hurt” by John Fahey, “Is it My Body” by Alice Cooper, “It’s All Happening Now” by our boys, “Sennen” by Ride, and “Plume” and “Starla” by the Pumpkins (back when they were good). Lol. you do know that the town centre has basically went through a huge alteration. There is no more virgin megastore, there is an orange shop now next to that small shop that sell lots of sweets oposite mcdonalds, erm there is a place called music zone now which is quite good. The market called All Star Value is now called JD Weatherspoons / Glass House. Its a pub and a resteraunt, me and my friends always go in there on our college break times. Its not that bad of a place but its a bit boring, not much happens there. We have KFC that basically doesnt “operate” its in a bad location so they get no customers (st.helens on a whole ;p) you will ask for a chicken sandwich and you will be waiting for about 45 mins because they have to freshly cook the chicken and it takes forever! I wonder if they actually spend the majority of the time chasing some chickens around with a net in the back of the shop. Lol. Anyway cya later people and i will look forward to some of these tabs people are going to send in to art. By the way please send me some (mezcal_head@hotmail.com) because ive got a tab site dedicated to swervedriver and I need some more tabs. (www.geocities.com/swervedrivertabs). Cya later people! –Dave

Saturday night, as my band plays in “lovely” downtown Norfolk Va., Echo and the Bunnymen are playing in DC. I hope you all have good weekends. I’ve rediscovered 60’s psychedelia for the umpteenth time. The Chocolate Watchband, the Standells, and the Pink Faeries have been blowing my mind. Take care all. -E

Oh yeah, I uploaded an interview that Jeff Turner did with you for PeterBelly Magazine a couple of years ago. Check it out in the Interviews section. BTW, “Sprouts” looked and sounded great when he was here. Trik, what crap advertising are you talking about?!?! Sam, I wasn’t too keen on “last burning embers” maybe because I thought the vocals were a bit un-inspired. I liked the music though. Kind of reminded me of mid-80’s D.C. area stuff. ALL LIVE SHOW RECORDERS: Definitely Sony MiniDisc (I have MZ-R55) and Sony stereo mic (ECM-MS907) is the way to go. Half the size of a DAT with comparable quality. Okay, now back to the unthinkable….

Have a lot going on here (The company I work is in chapter 11, yet we have some stuff in the works could pull the company through). I have been so tied up with getting it all straightened out, I didn’t remember Adams show until late in the evening and I was already too damn tired to do anything (worked all day). If I had known he was first on stage I might have tried to get my ass up there. Glad to hear the show was great (Did anyone of us really expect less? 😉 I don’t have anything to record with though, so even if I had made it…. Dan, was he selling the new TH EP up there? Does anyone know if it’s out? These past few months have been very weird and I only think they are going to get stranger. Glad I have all these SWD disks and this board to help keep it level. Dream well. SD
Date: Mon Nov 12 13:52:07 2001 Name: Dan’l City/State/Country: Chic-a-go-go Comment: Adam’s gig here 11/10 was excellent. A lot of leathered & scented hipsters due to the Reader writeup, but I done too much drink/smoke to care. It’s tough to get a good loud sound out of an acoustic guitar, but he pulled it off, and he leaned over several times to tweak something special on the floor that I couldn’t spot from my vantage point. Juggernaut Rides, The Other Jesus, The Hitcher… Toshack stuff (not familiar with all the songs yet)… and I heard he did the Beach Boys’ “Til I Die” for a soundcheck. Soundcheck?? Aside from what seemed to be an abbreviated set (30 minutes max), a pleasant evening indeed. Skipped out on the headliners too, just to show ’em what’s what, and went and smoke/drank some more. While I didn’t record it, I can put you in touch with a fella that did, with DAT and two PZMs, if yer interested. n30j3di – I wish I had time to shop around – thanks for the info. I own the home recorder/Walkman player package, real happy with it. The MiniDisc portable recorder I spied on/in a bar a few months ago was really slick – seemed to have stereo mics built into it and was green in color. I’d like to have one to record my own band’s practices, and bust it out for shows, too. “…they shine so hard / so why can’t we…”
Date: Mon Nov 12 09:49:33 2001 Name: n30j3di City/State/Country: syd, oz Comment: Dan’l (chicago): a MiniDisc is the non-DAT way to go for decent live recordings. Make sure u pick up a good stereo mic to go with it though… makes all the diff. Sony’s MZ-R700 MiniDisc is highly recommended (by moi) for a good feature / price ratio, though the model #’s prolly diff in the States.

Suckily, I work on weeknights, but I’ll try to get out and see you guys. What’s your band called? If anything it will just be cool to meet some more Swerve-heads. Actually the band’s playing at the 506 down there on Saturday. Wish us luck. Yes, Dan those are all some mighty fine bands you named, particularly Breadwinner and Polvo. I know members from each of those bands. Steve Popson, who was Polvo’s bassist, owns a great club in Raleigh called Kings. That’s my main hangout when I’m down there visiting my lady. We’re all just waiting for the day when Steve decides to start rockin’ again.

Date: Thu Nov 8 18:35:58 2001 Name: Dan’l City/State/Country: Chi Comment: Seam were based here for awhile, but marc’s right – they got their start in CH. In fact, my ol’ friend Bob joined Seam (on drums) after Headsparks, and they recorded The Problem With Me, did some touring, etc. If you like Seam, check Bitch Magnet, Bastro, Breadwinner, or the everpopular Slint. As I remember, Headsparks didn’t do it for me, but it’s been awhile – I’ll have to borrow it offa somebody. TPWM, my bias notwithstanding, was much more savory and worth owning. 2 days ’til Adam gets here – I heard that he got a short but favorable write-up in the Chicago Reader (free weekly rag that’s got all the music listings).
Date: Thu Nov 8 14:41:30 2001 Name: marc fort City/State/Country: austin, TX Comment: Yo Erik! That’s not so off the wall. I love Swervedriver and Seam and most of the bands that originated in Chapel Hill, NC including: Seam, Superchunk, Polvo, Archers of Loaf, Small 13. “Headsparks” is killer. Mac from Superchunk plays drums on it. Bloody fucking killer. Actually all their records are quite nice.
Date: Thu Nov 8 14:32:21 2001 Name: Erik City/State/Country: RVA Comment: One of my usual off the wall questions: Did any of you ever like Seam? I used to love their “Headsparks” album. I busted that out this morning and it’s been sounding quite nice. I think Seam is from your area, Dan’l.

Date: Wed Nov 7 20:52:47 2001 Name: art City/State/Country: nyc Comment: Adam’s show here was great! He played a lot of songs that I hadn’t heard before in his other acoustic shows. That acoustic version of Juggernaut is amazing and I never get tired of hearing Hitcher that way either. Check out the News page for a photo and a blurb. I did get a chance to speak with Adam and, hopefully, when he returns from LA we’ll sit down and do a real interview for the site. Then you can all have your questions answered once and for all. For now, just know that he’s having fun playing these songs and traveling the states. You can pick up the new Toshack 4-track at his gig.

We got word that they received it, but I think it takes while for them to decide who plays and who doesn’t. Hopefully we’ll be there. The show in Roanoke the other night was a blast, but I’m still pissed about missing Adam and Iggy. What lousy timing… Sorry I haven’t mailed you that stuff yet. Between school and the band, I’m one scatterbrained motherfucker these days. I’m also going to have hunt down someone who has a CD burner because Drew took his back. Date: Sat Nov 3 13:40:03 2001 Name: Paulo City/State/Country: Real Comment: I listened to some very good choons by My Vitriol yesterday. Great guitars and a competent drummer. Didn´t find too many traces of Swervedriver there, though. Foo Fighters are surely an inevitable comparison, but more elaborate (BTW, Mr. Grohl and his acolytes played at the 3rd edition of Rock in Rio back in January and wreaked havoc onstage with a PERFECT performance. I watched ~em on telly and it was the only show that got me eyes glued to the screen…). Art, Duel~s on mp3.com and they also have their own hp at www.listen.to/duel (now those guys are almost ILLEGALY influenced by the swervies.). Yesterday I was listening to a whole bunch of new bands, from Lift to Experience thru Beulah to White Stripes and then I audiogalaxied The Hitcher, only to reach the inexorable truth pertaining to all of them: Swervedriver are way too cool…

There are probably many more lurking out there as well, since I know there are a lot of Catherine Wheel fans here in the Northwest and they tend to be SWD fans as well – maybe we can convince Adam to stop here, eh? Anyway, glad to see folks are enjoying My Vitriol, I heard Always Your Way on the KEXP (local college radio) morning show today. Hopefully they will release the album in the US and come tour here one of these days…

Just search for them there. Have you checked out My Vitriol? I haven’t been able to get some of their songs out of my head lately. Check out “Cemented Shoes” and “Always Your Way” among others. Fantastic stuff! Later all, Zach

Jez, I am looking forward to your book and the live Swervie stuff. I hold my comments on Fulham, though. Erik, you ever gonna send me that vid and CD you promised me last time I was in VA???? Good luck with the show tonight. You still gonna try and make SXSW???? I should be in my house by then so I will have plenty of space. Well later, nigel
Date: Fri Nov 2 12:57:04 2001 Name: Erik City/State/Country: RVA Comment: Jez, thanks for always updating us on your life. It sounds like things are going well for you and I’m happy to hear that. Adam, good luck with tonight’s show in DC. I wish I could be there. I’m sure the “Ghost” and his posse will come. Iggy Pop’s going to be in town as well. Perhaps you two could get together and do some old Stooges songs, kinda revert things back to the Shake Appeal days for a short while. Paulo, it’s not a problem at all. Like I said, as soon as I see Mike, I’ll ask him about that recording. I can’t 100% promise that he’ll have it because he’s only been in the Lilys for a few years, but Mike’s an ardent music/bootleg collector so it’s very likely that he’ll have every recording the Lilys ever did. As for everyone else, I hope you have stellar weekends. I’m off to the old Virginny mountains to rock some college kids (hopefully). -E

Art, you lucky b…!, gonna have the première!! (You deserve it, Art! COngrats for running such a wonderful and beautiful site). Erik, you’re so kind, thanx very much. I’m not telling my girlfriend that I MAY get a copy of that live recording lest she ends up dying of heart attack (she’s an ardent fan of Lilys now after stealin all of me records…). Good weekend to y’all! (driving songs for the weekend: “A Hundred” by Duel; “Her way of praying” by Jesus & Mary Chain)

Anyway, back now.Off to France for the weekend, then going to a studio to put the finishing touches to some stuff I reckon you might all be somewhat interested in… I’ve been trying to find time to get this completed for literally MONTHS now. I’m really chuffed with what I’ve put together so far.Art,you will be the first to get “it” when it’s done to my ridiculously exacting standards – which has caused me no end of strife this year (not to mention a good number of beer tokens in studio time!),I can tell. Can you send me your home address please?Expect a package around the 14th.Sorry to be so cryptic, but I want this to just how “it should be” before I start blabbing about it – OK? The other day I thought I’d lost some vital master tapes, which made me change my pants a good coupla times,I can tell you!!!But I hadn’t – just left them in one of the many studios I’ve been using over the past few months – DOHHH! 🙂 As to my book – still not out I’m afraid – this publishing game seems to take even longer than getting an album out! Sorry about that.I will let you know the details as soon as I’m allowed…At this point,I just want the damn thing out, so my mum can find out the true depths of my depravity over the years – poor woman! And she thinks she knows it ALL!!!ho-hum… I really only wanted to post a message to say “Good Luck” to young mister Adam Franklin with his latest batch of “Travelling Bilberry” shows (I take it you’ve still got the “grapes” Converse, mate!!!).Hope it all goes fantastically for you.Maybe do a version of “En Viva El Fulham” one night in my honour 🙂 Take care,eh??? Right! I’m off! I’ll be in touch again really soon.Keep up the great message board – always good reading your comments – Later, jez….xxx
