Was quite surreal, engulfed in thick smoke, gas explosions erupting around the neighbourhood & totally surrounded by the firestorm. I’ve never seen a wall of flames move so quickly… I have to ponder whether fire like that has a ‘life’ of its own. We survived ok, heart goes out to those who didnt manage so well, (including the poor wildlife) & to those facing new fronts tomorrow. peace.

Art, I made it back to the good ole Big Easy myself, but only for a short night. Then it was on to the swamplands of Houma. Yup, Houma. I spent a nice few days with the fam down there. Like you, Art, I have to admit that it’s nice to be back in L.A. On a different note, I got a really cool mp3 player (Classic xp3) for Christmas that I am about to test. It’s charging right now. It will hold 10 gigs of mp3s, many of which will be Swervedriver. I’ll keep y’all posted on this thing. As for good music this year, you can’t forget MY VITRIOL. Finelines is a killer album. Jez, when will I be able to get my hands on the live album and the book??? Adam, when are you playing L.A. again??? Until next time, -Z-

Date: Tue Dec 25 22:32:26 2001 Name: Art City/State/Country: back in nYc Comment: Hello everyone. New Orleans was great, albeit subdued. I picked up a lot of excellent old vinyl in the form of several George Jones 45’s, some forgotten blues classics like Lightnin’ Hopkins and Bukka White, and of course some great New Orleans piano music via Professor Longhair. It was nice to get away to the Big Easy, but it sure is great to be back in the Big Apple! I thank everyone for your nice comments and for keeping this site so alive. You all provide the content, I just keep a small place on the internet for it. As you can probably tell, I’m pretty well entrenched in music of days gone by. But as far as new music goes, in addition to Mogwai’s Rock Action, I would lookout for a NY-based three piece called The Brought Low. Also, if you have not yet heard Hank Williams, III, do so. It’s eerie. And I would encourage everyone who has not yet done so to check out the music made by folks on this message board: Dragstrip Syndicate, Brazil, Sianspheric, Zelda Pinwheel, and Duel just to name a few. One final note, I listened to “So Slow” by Sophia for the first time a couple of weeks ago from that Swervedriver/Sophia split seven inch they did years back. What a nice song. Has anyone else been so idiotic in waiting this long to discover it? Have a happy new year all. Wish I could say it’s been a good one! Bring on 2002!!!

Date: Tue Dec 25 16:15:00 2001 Name: Bertrand City/State/Country: Liège\Belgium Comment: My best of 2001 will be very easy to decide, I’ve only bought one album recorded this year, Steve Wynn ” Here come the miracles” (seems very good after a few listens). I wanted to buy BRMC album but I’m not sure every song is as great as “Whatever happened to my rock’n’roll”. I listened to The Strokes the other day in a store but I was afraid to be quickly bored by the album which seems to sound the same on almost every song. So I decided to buy old stuff, mainly Sonic Youth (‘Daydream Nation’ and I don’t even speak of ‘Sister’) and some Boo Radley’s, Mogwai, Mudhoney, Velvet Underground and so on… But there is a ‘renaissance’ in some bands that start back to make rock’n’roll. I’m optimistic for the near future.

It finally started feeling like good ol’ christmas here in cold cold Finland. The temperature got down to a freezing -35 Degrees Celsius (-31 for all you “Fahrenheiters” out there) so there’s not a chance that I’m going to spent my leisure time outside. On the good side, the climate “forces” me to spent a lot of time listening Swervies. And oh yeah, on the subject of the best of the 2001 here’s my list: My Vitriol: Finelines, Circle: Taantumus, Psychoplasma: Until We Meet Again, Spiritualized: Let it come down and Ride’s triple CD box …
Date: Fri Dec 21 00:54:22 2001 Name: John City/State/Country: Seattle Comment: Here are my best for 2001, in no particular order. Actually, I was kinda encouraged by some of the stuff that came out this year…. Idlewild – 100 Broken Windows My Vitriol – Finelines Ours – Distorted Lullabies Guided By Voices – Isolation Drills Pete Yorn – Musicforthemorningafter Pernice Brothers – The World Won’t End Sad news about Stu Adamson – I agree that The Crossing was one of the better releases from the early 80’s. He was also in punk band before Big Country that is apparantly well thought of, in the UK at least (I forget the name of the band), although I haven’t heard anything from them…
Date: Thu Dec 20 22:59:28 2001 Name: Ghost City/State/Country: In a Big Country… Comment: Sad News… Stuart Adamson the front man for the Scottish band Big Country has taken his own life after fighting depression and alcholism and then dissappearing for a few weeks. I got The Crossing around 1988 and to this day I think it’s one of the most solid, perfect albums ever written. I still pull it out every couple of months and just dig it. To me it’s almost one of the earliest incarnations of the “emo” genre even though so far emo seems to mostly consist of American Bands, it has that “lump in your throat quality” that I love so much. I also love Stuart’s awesome guitar work of duplicating bagipes. Well thats all. Just sad.

Man buys the jacket and the idea…It may sound strange but I think that’s how many a rock band is born nowadays…So here’s my pick for best statement by a rock musicina this year: “Fuck the lifestyle…” — Adam Franklin.

I think I might know what this gentleman, Carl, is referring to. Perhaps the “upcoming Swervedriver album” he speaks of is the live compilation that Jez has been working on for some time. And perhaps, he is referring to Jez and “Swervedriver’s Producer.’ But these are all just guesses.
Date: Wed Dec 19 13:03:55 2001 Name: art City/State/Country: NYC, en route to New Orleans Comment: First, happy birthday Erik! And congrats on finishing school. You and Mr. T are setting a good example for the kids! (“Don’t be a fool – Stay in school!”) As far as music goes, I’m with you, est. Rock Action was a great album – and to see them live this year on top of that was almost too much to take. I could have been struck by lightening right then and there and would have been just fine. I was definitely disappointed with the Strokes. The hype machine has done them wrong. Since I’ve been listening to a lot of MC5, Stooges (Fun House, esp.), Velvets, etc.. it’s just hard to appreciate such an obvious facsimile. Hey Erik, I’ve been rocking out to Blue Cheer’s Vincebus Eruptum a lot lately. Is that intro to Summertime Blues insane or what?! Most of my music listening this year has come in the form of obscure funk instrumentals on 45, which I collect. No one you’ve probably heard of, but some of the sickest grooves ever laid down on wax. I’m heading down to New Orleans tomorrow to fill in some of the blanks in my Meters collection. Zach, if you weren’t in SD I’d say let’s meet at Rock-n-Bowl for a beer. More to come…

I’m drinking French Wine for chrissakes!!! But it is good to be done with it all. I’ll be here in Richmond until April. I moving in with Robin in Raleigh after the band goes on a brief Sring tour. Thanks for the b-day wishes. My birthday is technically on Wednesday, but we celebrated on Saturday. Lots of champagne guzzling, great fun. On Wednesday, I’m probably going to see Lord of the Rings. I’m super excited about that. To get into a Tolkien-esque mood I’ve been listening to a lot of early T-rex, back when he was called Tyrannosaurus Rex and wrote songs about elves, dragons, and woodland princessess and dorky things like that. Dave, yes I believe Porpoise song is on that record, good shit. To all Strokes and Spiritualized fans, I’m sorry I busted on those bands. I need to learn to keep my fucking mouth shut about music I don’t like. I hurt a friend of mine’s feelings the other night by spouting off about the Strokes, (I think a bottle and half of champagne had a lot to do with that). In any event, don’t pay any attention to me, (just remember that this is coming from a guy who regularly listens to Deep Purple and the Monkees for god’s sake). Actually, the other day I found “Sound of Confusion” by the Spacemen 3 on vinyl and have been loving it so much that I’m considering giving Spiritualized’s newest another try. I hope everyone is doing well. I’ll probably be back later. -E

That really is a tough one. I think the Sigur Ros album was released last year, but I didn’t get it until this year, so it’s on my list 😉 . Another one on my list, which I have only heard twice since it arrived today, is a little known ep entitled,’everyday, rock’n’roll is saving my life’. A quick review of this ep would be, 😀 -‘Standards’ by Tortoise makes the list as well. ‘Silver Wheel of Prayer’ by Roy Montgomery would also be under consideration and at least garner an honorable mention. After going off and on since 1993, I am finally rid of academia… A certain Stone’s song has been sounding good tonight… “I’m free to do what I want, any old time”… I’m going to celebrate in a little while by drinking a bottle of French wine. Take care all. -E

Did Sigur Ross’ album come out in 2001? I can’t remember. If so, it twas a good’n as well. -E

Date: Wed Dec 12 16:59:07 2001 Name: mike City/State/Country: boston ma. Comment: mogwai’s “rock action” is nice.:) i do like spiritualized’s “let it come down”, but its not as good as their (his) others. ive got “everyday rock n roll is saving my life” on order, and im sure its quality as always. tool’s “lateralus” might have to be my pick for best album of 2001. has anybody heard the new curve cd called “gift”?
Date: Wed Dec 12 15:42:28 2001 Name: DTC City/State/Country: TEXAS Comment: I have to agree. Seeing Spiritualized live was also one hell of a letdown, I expected so much more and it just wound up being aural sominex.
Date: Wed Dec 12 14:12:02 2001 Name: Erik City/State/Country: RVA Comment: I’ve got to say that the biggest let down, musically speaking, of 2001 was, sadly enough, Spiritualized’s record. I was always a huge fan of Mr. Pierce but I think he’s sort of lost the plot. In reference to firing his bandmates, I agree with this one critic who said, “maybe Jason should realize that he could get by with a little help from his friends.” Dave, I agree that the White Stripes deserve an honorable mention, and I also must admit that “Headquarters” by the Monkees was one my choice listening faves this past year. It’s a surprisingly phenomenal pop record. The end of 2001 I have found myself favoring my beloved fuzz guitar/psych sound: The Pink Fairies, Blue Cheer, The Dirtbombs, the Go, the Amboy Dukes, and Dragonfly. However, the music that I enjoyed most throughout 2001 was Soul Music, the Stax/Muscle Shoals/Motown era. Wilson Pickett, Smoky Robinson, and particularly Otis Redding saved my life many a times this year. My happiest moment in 2001, amidst all the tragedy, was when my girlfriend and I went on a roadtrip through the Smoky Mointains in Tennessee. We made it to the Rock and Soul Museum in Memphis and it was an amazing, visceral experience for me. 2001 was probably the worst year I’ve ever known. A lot of deaths of beautiful people in my life; friends, family, and celebrities, (George Harrison and Joey Ramone), and not to mention the Sept. 11th attacks which brought America to war once again. But the music always keeps you looking ahead… Damn, sorry about my long-ass rant there. I didn’t realize I was getting that carried away. Anyway, 2002 WILL be better than this year. I can’t wait to hear the music. At least I finally finished college. -E
Date: Wed Dec 12 12:58:11 2001 Name: DTC City/State/Country: TEXAS Comment: Personally I like the Strokes, I’ll count them as one of the better albums this year. Guided By Voices “Isolation Drills” was also quite impressive. James’s new one wasnt bad, and Lift to Experience’s “The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads” is probably the best album to come out of Texas in the past 10 years, right up there w/ 7% Solution’s “All About Satellites and Spaceships”. I get a woody everytime I see them live. But I guess there you have it, thats all that I can think of that was worth a damn that I heard this year.
Date: Wed Dec 12 07:55:12 2001 Name: Ian City/State/Country: Glasgow Comment: The Strokes?!?! – The music’s good but I cant help thinking they’re taking the ol’ Brit pop/60s type thing down yet another level which may be good or bad (depending on how you look at it). Plus they look like a big bunch of girls blouses. There’s not been very much to jump about this year. Lift to Experience were great live but still havnt heard the album. Mogwais new album is pretty beautiful but still very…er…mogwaian. Dunno realy. Im starting to get worried now cause i realised I might be getting old and into that “It ‘owll saaands the bloody same to me…” old guy thing.
Date: Wed Dec 12 06:27:19 2001 Name: n30j3di City/State/Country: syd, oz Comment: Bertrand: PLan 7 is the short instrumental near the end of ESR, followed by a 1 minute track of silence, followed by Flaming Heart. Well, that’s my copy anyways… Ghost: At The Drive-In has to be one of the few names worth mentioning in relation to 2001. Shame they bust-up though 🙁
Date: Wed Dec 12 05:15:57 2001 Name: Fester City/State/Country: The Shire Comment: Being a huge fan of “Hard Days Night”, I can’t tell you what a pleasure it was to hear “Is This It”. Short, catchy, Harrison-like riffs, rough and ready vocals, tight little changes, and like H.D.N., plenty of rip-offs/influences/homages. But most of all, its fun and unpretentious. To me, the title has a double meaning. Given the hype and success, “Is This It(?)” is a great punchline to an inside joke that the band may have already foresaw. As the saying goes, “Where’s there’s hype, there’s backlash”. Best of 2001? Can’t say really. I’m too busy looking forward to next year, if you know what I mean. Peace!
Date: Wed Dec 12 05:07:55 2001 Name: dave City/State/Country: bradford Comment: it’s tricky, innit? i think the strokes are pretty good – not worth the hype (is anyone??) but i like the crappy sound they have. the white stripes are vry interesting (he said, stroking his chin…) i haven’t really bought any blistering rock’n’roll this year…my faves seem to have been fairly chilled – i really like the ‘A Camp’ album, ed harcourt’s album is really good (it may well be MOR…i can’t tell anymore!!!!!). ah, fuck it – the best things i bought this year were mike nesmith’s first 2 solo albums and….’from elvis in memphis’!!?!…terrible admission about the elvis thing, but i can’t help it!!!!!!!! it stops there, though. NO MORE ELVIS!

Date: Tue Dec 11 22:53:35 2001 Name: ghost City/State/Country: Happy Thanksgivingland Comment: I’m with Erik on that one the strokes suck. I kept posting about a much better ripoff band that was out this time last year. (which noone ever commented on) At the Drive In ripped off the Mc5’s act but their outrageously inventive lyrics and dueling guitars let them be a band of their own. I saw a 2 minute interview online with the Strokes and even every still photo they’ve taken have been set up to look like the 70’s. Ron saw them on Target Tv. Then Ron saw himself on the surveilence monitor and when he came home he said, “My trip to Target was lovely, I even got to be on the TV”.
Date: Tue Dec 11 22:31:34 2001 Name: Erik City/State/Country: RVA Comment: To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure if I bought any new albums this year. Most of my music purchases were from used record stores. I thought the BRMC’s album was pretty decent. I’m not too keen on the Strokes, they’re definitely not worth their hype. “Second coming of the Stooges” my ass. I think my votes would have to be The Cherry Valence self titled on Estrus, “Seen it All” by Skywave, The Greenhornes self titled on Tel-Star, and “Everyday, Rock and Roll Saves my Life”, (even though I have yet to get it). There may be more that I’m not remembering, but those spring to mind for now. -E

A friend of mine (who’s into indie rock and stuff) voted for Kings of COnvenience “Quiet is the New Loud”, which is not a bad album but wouldn’t run among the ten nominees in my h. op. I like Mercury Rev’s album but it’s certainly not exttraordinary, neither is BRMC’s…(I can hardly think of anything extra-ordinary this year…) Lift to Experience is a stronger candidate but I still have to spin it a coupla times before passing my verdict on that strange sound…Yeah…I guess maybe it’s not yet time we chose the Best of 2001…(I wish music critics waited at least two years before choosing their Best of…)

There, delivering America’s national news was John Roberts, or, to us Torontonians, J.D. Roberts. Ya see, ol’ J.D. was a hippie back in the day who got his start by hosting a new and innovative video show called “Toronto Rocks”. Everyday, after school, the ritual was to hurry home to watch J.D. set up videos by the Clash, the Police, and REO Speedwagon to name a few. Toronto Rocks eventually became MuchMusic, which some of you may already know as Canada’s answer to MTV. J.D. has interviewed just about every rock star on the planet, and yet, there was substituting for Dan Rather for crying out loud! In a suit! With his hair all cut and grey! Damn, do I feel old. What makes this really funny is that on this particular night, of the three major networks, two of them had Canadians delivering America’s news. And don’t even bother to get me started with CNN. Sorry, I’m having trouble sleeping. Too much bad news. God Bless all swervies.

But why didnt Never Lose That Feeling, Kill All Super Heroes and Juggernaught Rides feature on any of the albums. As they are some of the best tracks ive heard by them.

Date: Tue Dec 4 14:07:01 2001 Name: Johnny City/State/Country: San Diego, CA Comment: I have a question about a Swervedriver Mp3 I found on the net. The title of the song is apparently “Over” and it’s definitely Adam’s voice, but I have a few questions…Who is he singing with? When was this played? Is there an album version?

A guy at a recent show of ours wrote a really nice review and put a picture online, (I’m the one who’s all stretched out with his arm in the air). Since we’re kinda like family here, I thought I’d share it with you all. http://www.X814X.com I hope everyone’s weeks are off to good starts. Take care. -E

Date: Sun Dec 2 23:10:50 2001 Name: Erik City/State/Country: RVA Comment: What’s up gang? Hope everyone had good weekends. I returned today from a weekend jaunt up north with the band. Man, those kids up there were mighty kind to us, it was great. Delmonte Man, thanks for Th’ Faithhealers info. Anna, thanks for your reply too. Good to know others out there still dig those bands. Stockholm, eh? There’s a lot of great Swedish rock bands out there these days, particulary the Hellacopters. They rock!! I never thought I’d see a band do such diverse covers, everyone from the Stones, the Misfits, Smoky Robinson, Kiss, the Temptations, Bob Segar, and Skynard!! As a Southerner, the last one really kills me, hearing Swedes singing about Yankees and all. But anyway, hope all is well for you Swedes, Canadians, Californians, and everyone else. -E
