Comment: IVE JUST READ THIS ON THE SWERVEDRIVER MESSAGEBOARD ON AUDIOGALAXY.COM ……………….Swerving back on track: SWD to play Top of the Pops! : by forthcoming into the sameness of brit-pop-rock; a tidy tailored SWERVEDRIVER (qv) will appear on the virtually tolerable music- chat show Top of the Pops and perform their new single — leading off a soon to be released cd — “ten fifty two.” Wednesday, Adam franklin told a company of reports, “listen shortbritches, survival trumps any want for fame and balance. if we didn’t do what we wished” he said, “we be the stereolab…and come to think of it, being them wouldn’t be such a bad thing.” ———— IS THIS TRUE?!!??! GAD ZOOKS!!! AND BY THE WAY…………I WANT SOME TABS RRRRROOOAAAAAARRRR!!!

Comment: Art, I’m getting that classic “no response” message where it says either the server is down or the program is not responding. Hopefully you get it worked out. Some 24/7 Swerve surely sounds sweet!! And yes!! I do know the Oregon Hill Funk Allstars. Well, not personally, but I have seen them play. The irony in their band name is that Oregon Hill is the kind of the poor, white, redneck-ish neighborhood of downtown Richmond. Did they play up in NYC? I’m glad you got a little Richmond flavor your way. If only we could get our asses back up there…(sigh). All in due time. Good luck with your technical work. -E

Comment: that’s strange. Everything looks like it should be working. oh well, I will keep at it. The idea was to have a Swervedriver ShoutCast server running 24/7. Right now it’s all b-sides and rarities. Soon I’ll add live stuff. But if I can’t get it to work then… Actually Mac users with Audion can login and check it, too. Erik & Zach, exactly what problems were you guys experiencing? Sorry to be all business, but I’ve been swamped with work and such lately. I promise to return soon with some social skills! Hey Erik, are you familiar with the Oregon Hill Funk Allstars? I saw them briefly on Saturday night. Actually, my friend’s brother is the drummer. Just thought you might know them. Thanks for the tech support!

Comment: Ghostie-O, the only thing I have by the Creation is some bootleg CD called “Red with Purple Flashes.” I bought it like eight years ago when no one cared about the Creation and their music had yet to be re-released. I think if you get any of the greatest hits/collection CDs you should be good to go. Just make sure “Making Time” and “How does it Feel to Feel” are on there. Those are definte necessities. I’m sure just about everyone here remembers Ride’s version of the ladder of those two. Good version indeed. -E

Comment: Deus? They must be one of those bands from the great era that slipped through my fingers. Speaking of which, this weekend I found used copies of “Lido” by Th’ Faith Healers and the Verve “Lucky Man” single, (the good one with “Longest Day” on it). It’s been a fine a weekend. The band played a great show in Wilmington, NC. I’d never been there before, beautiful place with good peeps. Hope everyone’s weeks get off to a good pace. “Every Monday morning comes too soon,” but that’s ok because, “I’ve got Friday on my mind”… -E

I have some live videos from Raise, and the videos from MTV. I’d be willing to make copies for copies of other old songs I don’t have. Although you can get some rare and live stuff from places like Audiogalaxy and stuff like that. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Comment: Hey all, I hope everyone had good weekends. I’m at work right now, half drunk. A regional magazine called 64 just released their annual music issue. We were invited to be a part of the issue, the attached CD, and even better, we were invited to their private CD release party. The shebang took place earlier this evening on the third floor of the headquarters for a corporate bank. I felt extremely weird being surrounded by a bunch of suited corporate honkeys, but I gotta say I loved the free booze. Afterwards, Kevin, the other guitarist for DSS, and I went around to the corner to the local British Pub, Penny Lane, (Yes, that’s right, there’s an authentic British pub here in Richmond owned by two old Liverpudlians), and we drank even more. There’s something all too wonderful about being fucked up at work and having no one else notice… I hope all is well w/ everyone else. Ghost, goddammit one of these days I’ll be in town while you are here, I promise. -E

Comment: Indeed a sweet bit of info about the vinyl, gents. I’ve been even more vinyl crazy than usual because I recently bought an old elementary school, govenment issue, portable record player. It was built in 1961 or so and it rules!! My records have been sounding so sweet on it. This morning I christened my 7″‘s by listening to “Why Say Yeah” and “93 Million Miles”. Tonight, at Plan 9 records, I found two amazing collectable Otis Redding records. I was a happy man to find those. But anyway, I hope you all have good weekends. My girl and I are spending the weekend at the beach. And yes, the record player’s coming with us, along with some 60’s soul and some Swerve… -E

Comment: baptiste, I found the answer: “The Porky Prime Cut comes from Porky’s mastering studio in Shaftesbury Avenue which is the legendary vinyl cutting place. This is the stage in between the final studio mixing and the manufacturing of the vinyl. George Peckham (Porky to his mates) always puts Porky Prime Cut on his vinyl. It originally came from when he did bootleg vinyl in the 60s. The “Porky Prime Cut” was like a quality stamp, designed to let the purchaser know that they were buying something at least halfway listenable. The reason that the band scratched additional comments on the vinyl for the first few years is that the band would attend the vinyl mastering session and add the comments themselves whilst sitting around reading endless back copies of Studio Sound magazine. The CD master was then usually done as an unattended job later on. However from around 1992/1993 onwards, CD had become the prevailing format and the vinyl was then the afterthought. Hence the band would be there for the CD mastering session but the vinyl would be cut later in their absence. Hence the lack of witty comments in the run out grooves. If someone would care to list all the run-out groove comments then I’ll go through and explain them. thanks Dave —– Original Message —– From: “Guy Brookfield” To: ; Sent: Friday, January 11, 2002 9:51 AM Subject: Re: vinyl veiws…. > — “lethe” wrote: > > >I maybe didn’t explain myself clearly, but I do think the WHAT is written on the ride vinyl (the majority at least) is self explanatory, I was actually asking if anyone knew why they did it in the first place, was it just reserved for certain vinyl? I have only seen it on indie stuff (most of the ride vinyl and the lush as i mentioned) And why did it stop? > > Why they did it in the first place…. Because they could? The Smiths did a similar thing with their Rough Trade stuff. The ‘Porky Prime’ stamp probably referred to the pressing plant Creation used when they were still ‘indie’ (for want of a better word). Also, I remember reading in Vox or some similar rawk publication around the time of GBA that a lot of vinyl plants were closing down, since record companies were trying to phase out the medium, so maybe the later records were pressed abroad where there was no scope for putting messages in the run-out grooves. Or, maybe Creation switched pressing plants after the Sony take-over in 1992. This is all speculation, of course… – Guy from www.space-trash.co.uk” So there it is… I think

Comment: Hey Ian I have never even seen it called Mickey. We Americans always seem to get the shaft when it comes to U.S. releases. That’s an interesting little difference. I just got a brand new copy of “Never Lose that feeling” on 12 inch vinyl today. And it came from Scotland. From a store called Groovy Vinyl in Moray? Maybe you’ve heard of them Ian. I am curious are the cds you have on 2 different lables or 2 different distributors? Do they have different dates on them or different colors? And can I say different one more time? I am sorry I just got off of work and it retards me a little. There is nothing funny about being handicapped but today in my store I helped 2 clowns in wheelchairs. And when I say clowns I don’t mean jerks or fools, these were actual party clowns rolling around in electronic wheelchairs. They were shopping for file cabinets. It made me feel INSANE.

Comment: Did any of you by any chance ever listen to this band called Poem Rocket? They were originally from my neck of the woods, but they relocated to NYC. I’m not sure if they’re still together, but they are great, man. They’re like early Slowdive, MBV, Sonic Youth, even Cure-esque here and there. I would recommend “Felix Culpa” and “Infinite Retry on Timeout”. “Milky White Entropy” and “Period” from the F.C. album are beautiful, lamentful songs that hit the spot with me all day, just like it was 1995 all over again. But anyway, this weekend was a good one for me. My band played two great shows and the Royal Tennenbaums is an outstanding movie with great tunes. Go see it when you get a chance. I hope everyone else had a good weekend as well. -E

Comment: Me again (promise to spare all the “geez” this time…). I was rummaging among old files and found out I too have something swerve to trade: a creation poster signed by tje band (actually I’vegot two, the other one has been hanging on an notice board for ages to remind me that once upon a time there existed a thing called rock and roll…):O It’s not in mint condition but still quite hang-able and I’d swap for live swerve videos, especially of the Raise or ESR era. Is anybody here in possession of such exotic delicacies? // Good to hear about Medicine. I’ve recently bought a record by a band called Lusk, which I’d read was the solo project of Tool’s bassist and was worth a listen. I thought it to be both weird and good at the same time . As I read the credits who should I find there but Mr. Brad Laner! No wonder…//”Her words profane, her mouth divine/I tend to sympathize with both sides…” — Mainman in Mercury Rev (forgot his name…)

Comment: WoW! 2002’s already here! Went with me girlfriend and friends to a nice lil’ town upstate for the holidays and drove back while listening to Drop Nineteens, geez, does anyone know if any of those guys still into the rock and roll biz? Geez how I luv that third song from first album (delaware?)//Saw Lord of the Rings yesterday…and llluved it! Reminded me of the good ol’ days spent on Middle Earth Role Playing (and Rolemaster) adventures with the other members of what I could call the Fellowship of Nerds…To be honest I had the impression that Tolkien’s world was something of a Middle Ages without Christianity (and now I tend to prefer the real thing) but it certainly is a MARVELOUS novel and the movie’s very good indeed (altho you can’t compare them of course…I remember reading an interview with an acclaimed french director who said that the reason for his success was that his films were nevere based on Classics, for you simply can’t make much out of a Classic…). //Listened to some stuff by Exps in the Sky, great songs, gotta get that cd. //Stephen from Jersey, just three words for you: you lucky bastard!//Ain’t got the new TH yet, boy am I late!//Ride, Creation comp, geez, lotsa catch up with, guess i’ll turn in now and come back tomorrow, cya……

Comment: Hi Last night I went to the japanese amazon website and I couldn’t read anything on the page cause it’s in Japanese, but I put in Swervedriver and the first thing that came up was a Creation records 2 cd set that has a blue cover and it’s called Creation Records “International Guardians of Rock n’ Roll 1983-1999” does any one have this? I then looked it up on amazon uk and amazon usa and it didn’t come up. I want to order it it’s 3600 yen but I can’t read that shit to get to the order forms. Also you guys that got the Ride Box set did you have to order it? Or do you live in places unlike Hampton Va that carry it in stores? Well happy year 2000. Oh, it’s 2002. Does it even matter anymore? I think we peaked at 2000. For the rest of my life it’s just going to be the year 2000, ok? Goodnight.

Comment: Best Album of 2001: Explosions in the Sky ” Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever” Mogwai and Godspeed!-like scorching instrumental rock intensity, but so damned more down-to-earth or emotional or something. Craploads better than Rock Action. Check em out, they’re on Temporary Residence records. After that: Lift to Experience, the New Year, the Clean, Techno Animal, Creeper Lagoon, Labradford, the Pilot Ships, Stars of the Lid, Amnesiac, M Rev, New Order.
