Comment: Ricky, a change is gonna come indeed. As for your amplification, I would suggest a Marshall JCM for your cab. Jon, one of the other guitar players in my band, plays my old JCM through his Orange cabinet and it fucking screams. I think it even sounds better than the Orange head he was using. Give it a try. As for the Catherine Wheel, I’m gonna keep my mouth shut. I hope you all had good weekends. -E

Comment: CW’s early stuff is great! I definately don’t think they measure up as well nowadays though. Swervedriver is constantly evolving, where as CW seems to be doing more and more cliche’ acoustic stuff. Even when Adam does an acoustic song, it still sounds so Swervedriver, wheras it seems that CW’s stuff is just about their singer. No offence, I just think Swervedrivers discography is much more solid!

Comment: Hey Seattle Random Visitor – There are Swervies here in the Sound area, as someone else said. I check in here every now and again to see if there’s any SWD/Adam news. There also is a large contingent of Catherine Wheel fans in the area, a band with a similar sound (and sadly, a similar situation as to current band activity, but that’s another story). Any CW fans here? I’ve been surprised to not see much discussion of them here, since SWD pops up occasionally on the CW discussions. If folks here haven’t heard them, by all means run, don’t walk, to your record store and check ’em out… ;>

Comment: I’ve gotta question for all you git fiddlers out there. Have any of you ever owned or played through one of those old Ampeg V4s or V22s? If so, give me some input. I had to walk around this section of Richmond tonight, called Church Hill, and deliver handbills for a cafe. You could see the entire city, lit up and beautiful. I listened to Raise and had a Verve-esque moment, “stood at the top of the hill over my town.” Have good weekends, all of you. I’m off to play some shows down at the beach “where the breeze flows easy through the sun.” -E

Comment: Hey Haw and Seb, You guys know Dark Star played some of the new songs on ‘Top of the Pops’? You can actually find those songs if you search for them. Look for ‘clicky’, ‘syj’ and these next few, I don’t know if they were new or old, but search ‘romanroad’, ‘thelastthingsheeversaid’ and ‘3seconds’. Also, as usual, I’m the Johnny come lately here. I just picked up ‘The Sound Of The Colour Of The Sun’ by SIANspheric. To me it sounds like early SIANspheric with some FSA (Flying Saucer Attack) mixed in for good measure. Defintely a great listening experience while pining for new SWD! πŸ˜‰ Dream well Swervies! SD

Seagull is the song that started me off down the road to Sonicsville in the first place. Well, it was Drive blind now I think about it but Seagull sealed my fate. Comment: Speaking of Oscars… In November I was fortunate enough to get to make a Video of Sir Adam Franklin’s acoustic show at The Black Cat in DC which was prolonged by multiple computer crashes and bad luck. But I finally got the finished version to Brad in Canada who runs Toshackhighway.com and hopefully in the next month if any of you were unable to attend any of Adam’s recent acoustic shows you can virtually go to one now and for those who did get to see him you can revisit. And I’d like to dedicate my pretend Oscar to Adam Franklin whose music I cherish and bla bla bla. Thank You Academy…

Comment: What do we speculate would an alleged last ever album from swerve be titled and what would it contain? Shouldn’t we, as long dedicated fans be now putting back in = that is to say offering ideas to the cause and not just raving on in some try hard, hang-er-on-er manner? “KICK START”(album title) with mixture of originals and “specially” selected renditions of covers. Beginning the album with either THE VAPOURS “Turning Japanes” or THE CHURCH’s classic “Unguarded Moment” AMEN. PS feel free to donate titles of songs, riffs and poetry/lyrics etc hereafter… snail

Comment: and not much has changed since then! Have moved successfully and all SWD CDs have been accounted for and back on line. it’s been 3 weeks and i’ve still got that dislocated feeling you get when the sun doesn’t set over the ocean anymore but sinks over dem hills. The problem with Newcs is that literally there is just no place to go on a saturday nite so its just us, the billy and the champers getting plastered like we did when we were 19, but with a much bigger CD collection now. keep humming along swervies. i could really do with some good news like oh, er, a SWD tour? must dash to my turn at the moose game….could do with that hat about now chizzy cause i keep losing each round :-)))

Comment: Royboy, yeah Spiritualized and BRMC are coming through my neck of the woods too. I’m so there. As for the Bolan/SWD connection, I think “Chateau in Va. Waters” is brilliant mainly for the turn around in the middle of the verse, where they kind kind of linger on that A chord for a little bit. To me, that sounds amazing, (and I get a kick out of hearing them sing a song about my home state). Also, when seeking a Bolan influence in Swervedriver, I think one of the most clear cut examples is the slow version of “Harry and Maggie” (aka “93 Million Miles and Counting”). That song, at that speed, sounds very T-rex-ish to me, and it rocks. And as for a final Swervedriver tour, if this is true, I’m just happy to know that I’ll be able to see them one last time and say goodbye. I hope everyone is well. Have good weekends, Swervies. Never lose that feeling. -E

Comment: Like everything, I guess, Swervedriver must eventually come to an end. All we can do is grow pitifully old, reminiscing about the “good ole days”– aahhh… I would rather remember them as I know, than have them put out an album trying to make their last attempt at “success”. As far as I’m concerned they are the most successful band I’ve ever known. NO other band has ever captivated me so, nor entrapped me in a never-ending, never-tiring state of bliss and wonderment. How they do it— who knows, but they have some sort of magic. Just one more tour is all I ask. I don’t need another album (I would like one, but don’t NEED one). I have, on many ocassion, found myself with “Raise” being the only cassette in my truck for MONTHS. I never took it out of my player. I would start my truck in the morning to it and end my day with it. Is that out of control?? Does anyone else do that?? It’s not that I’m obsessed with them, it’s just comfortable that way. Anyway, who wants to really see them be popular. Isn’t that kind of the allure that they are OUR band. I would hate to see the corporate world suck them in. I would hate to ever have to hate them for something that someone else did to them. SORRY for rambling… By the way, I have videos that I am willing to copy for anyone who wants them. All I ask is shipping and handling along with the price of the blank cassettes. It is the least I can do to keep the art alive. Let me know if any are interested. –B

Comment: Basicly, I’m just saying that we should be keeping in the back of our heads! There’s definately tales on the message board about people missing shows for whatever reason…..so I’m just putting up the warning flag. I really cant rat out who told me, but he’s close to them and said that it would mainly be Adam’s decision, I totally agree that we should hear it from the band, but I’m letting everyone know what I’ve heard because no one should miss their last show rolling through their town, then hear a couple weeks later, from the band, that they’re done…..right? Last thing I want to do is upset……just don’t miss any show’s this summer/fall for jobs, girlfriends, 55gallon drums of tequila….etc

Comment: Damn! An OLM shit-kicking and it looks like I just missed it. Up here we have Canadian Content laws that serve bands like OLM a little too well…Just think, we get to hear them on the radio – alot. And they wonder why there’s fighting in hockey. Here’s my my POV on the “last” swervie: If it hasn’t happend yet, it will likely not happen. However, should it happen (and believe you me, I’ve go my fingers crossed to the point of exhaustion) then I would expect them to make it their best. Going out with a bang and all that. BUT, if it is their best, than what will likely happen is that it’ll catch fire, blow up, and save the musical universe from itself. Sorta like the Beatles, but with a lot more wah-wah. Then, Jez will go on MTV and say something like, “Jesus saved the Swervies”, where by, the bible belt will get really pissed, and attack the MTV studios. As the fires of holy retribution eat away at all those Britney Spears videos, the swervies will find themselves trapped. Suddenly, Billy Corgan will appear at the studio’s secret back door! “We’ve been expecting you”, he says and quickly ushers the swervies into an escape limo. From there, the swerves go back to the peaceful underground, having made a lasting impression on generations to come…..This is all speculation of course, but if there ever was a band that was due, it’s the boys…-F;)

I found out about Adam’s E.M.P. show here the FUCKING DAY AFTER!! bleh- Say, have you heard the local project, “S” album was called Sadstyle? Fucking brilliant. My initial reaction was something to the effect of: “God damn this is the best fucking (new)recording I have heard in at least a year at best. As if Slowdive merged w/ Bjork… with hints of much more… PHONE-COMPANY: I think that was an understatement. Anytime I hear the words “Our Lady Peace” my mind IMMEDIATELY goes to one of 2 thoughts: 1. I never paid much attention to the lyrics on the “Satansville” version, but the demo version really brings home the message, you know? But anyway, yes Low Sunday is great. Steve, I hope you’re enjoying yourself down there at SXSW. Did you call the house the other night and drunkenly scream, “You Pussy-bitches” into the answering machine then hang up? Who else could it have been? We all got a kick out of it. I was bummed there won’t be a Seattle show though… Anyone else here checked out the band Lowsunday? I got their album “Elesgiem” recently after seeing a review comparing them to Catherine Wheel, My Bloody Valentine, Ride and other “shoegazer” bands. They’ve got the big, layered guitar sound, but I’d say they sound closer to the Jesus & Mary Chain and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club than some of the other bands to which they were getting compared. Still, not bad at all for a band out of Pittsburgh, and if you’re looking for a fix of heavily layered guitars, it’s worth picking up….

Comment: Remember that spring 1998 when 99th dream was supposed to be released in Europe around the 20th of february. It was finally on store around three months later. Every week, I was going to the store asking if it wasn’t released yet. Quite a boring teenager (16) I was to annoy so much the poor sellers. Ohhh, and, it is quite an official noise, but the mix between rock’n’roll instruments and jazzy surfy saxophone in “never lose…” is the best mix with kind of different instruments I’ve ever heard.

Comment: Good thing I friends from the UK, or I wouldn’t know what a “Carry On” movie was or a “# 99”. Or the intricacies of why swervie might be frustrated with the Fulham Cup. LOL! While were on the subject of ear candy, anybody also catch the beat tokes in Jaguar “E”? And I know I have brought this up before, but a just a little reminder on the cow bells at the end of satansville: they’re a sample from the movie Duel – (which is, of course, the same movie that the single Duel is supposedly based on). The Movie Guru has spoken! Cell door slamming in Satansville? Thanks for that little easter egg. Never caught it before, but I’ll listen for it. est-Caught a little Trail of Dead. Any band that is a fan of Bladerunner I’m a fan of, and “Relative Ways” is hitting me nice. Chizzy-Thanks for the invite, it would be fun to go, but anti-social bastard could apply to me as well. When talking to the swerves myself, the impression I got is that they were happy with 99th Dream. Jez was a big fan of “She Weaves, Wrong Treats, and These Times”. For me, 99th rocks as equally as the rest. Yes, it’s not as crazy complicated as Raise, but that’s the beauty of it. The subtle thing about 99th is the latin vibe that comes out in places. Very cool. Where the hell is Jez?:) He’s about due for an appearance.;)

He said his absolute fave was “Bubbling Up” off ESR, and his least favorite was “You Find it Everywhere” off MH. I told him that there wasn’t a single song by the band that I disliked. Hairy, did Adam really say that 99th was his least favorite? That’s strange because to me it always seemed he was pretty proud of that album. Perhaps all the redtape surrounding it’s release left some bitter memories for him. It’s mighty cold in Carolina today. -Erik

Comment: Raise is the best for sure as it has EVERYTHING I need in EVERY way. Then, ESR seems to be more like an old time classic. Mezcal is sometimes a little slow when you need some “punch” but every song is near perfection. And then 99thdream, just need to skip to track #5 and then it’s excellent. On the four first, the voice goes (too much) down into treble and it tends sometimes to be exagerated. This is just my opinion of course. Raise is full of bass sounds and I prefer this.

Comment: Dunno. Nothing’ll touch the first two, that much is certain. But this is a statement made about loads of bands that make milestones with their first couple of albums and consequently have to spend the rest of their careers producing music that lives up to that standard. As for 99th, the only track I’d say doesn’t quite work out well is ‘in my time’. I may be opening meself up for criticism here tho!! However, ‘Expressway’ & ‘Behind the scenes and sounds…’ are fantastic songs I think. ESR half finished? Never noticed it meself, however considering Creation seemed content to pump all their energy/money into O***S I’d be none too surprised if that possibly did happen. Anyway…….are My Vitriol any good? Not heard any of their stuff but vaguely remember seeing a gig review where the journo called them My(bloody)Vitriol. I think he was tryin to be sarcastic, but only succeeded in arousing my curiosity!

Comment: 99th is weird, The first 6-7 tracks are like the best album. Then it runs out of steam ( for me anyway). ESR is patchy. Theres some good tunes but it sounds half finished. Mezcal & raise are the most consistent of the four. Just sold my Fender Flame for Β£450.00. Feel pleased as it had taken some knocks recently. Will be gigging in June. Really looking forward to it. Going to see SEAFOOD on friday, saw them supporting My Vitriol last year, to be honest SEAFOOD were loads better. Must go….gotta pretend to do some work.

Comment: I know it’s not Adam’s favourite album but 99th is ace. ESR is the better album of the two purely for the work of genius that is known as ‘The Other Jesus’. I always liked the scratch on ‘Director’s Cut’ but the guitar solo before it is the standout bit for me. Ammmmaaaaazzziiinnnngg!!!!! Can’t beleive the scratch is off ‘Electric Warrior’. I’ve had that for donkeys! How could I not have noticed…….

Comment: What a shite start to the week. Landlord causin’ me stress and got an essay due on Thurs. Wouldn’t mind but everybody else has got stuff in at the same bloody time which means no books& no computers. Ah well, sod it, I just won a CD of ‘Mezcal Head’ off E-bay so that means I can preserve me vinyl one special occasions only. At least today has one bright spot. Trik- the gig was good, very good in fact. Supports were top too. Pretty much missed most of the first band’s set but when I came up the stairs, beer in hand, I could hear the sweet sound of feedback being manipulated in someone’s hands. I knew then that the music would be right up my street! second band were a bit heavy but a coupla nice tunes. Ian’s band were last on and I was really impressed to be honest. Havin’ never met Ian before and not knowin what he looks like I could only look out for someone playin a Jag. Music was top banana, some Swervie influences definitely being worn on the sleeve. All the better for it I reckon. Some of the songs were of a definite ‘sitting at the top of a sandune looking out to the sea at dusk’ type quality ‘When you’re minced’ also springs to mind. Reccomended definitely. Ian- sound geezer if I remember correctly, but a few too many Southern Comforts had kicked in by the time we met so things are a bit blurry from my perspective. Anyhow, anytime anyone’s in Glasgow go see his band if they’re playin’. They is quite good… Oh and Dave-got that bit on Motorbike. I know what you mean, it’s hidden right at the back, innit?

Comment: Looks like things are going well for everyone’s bands, projects, etc. Especially you, Ian. Congrats, my good man. I think our label woes may be coming to an end. That clown from our last label is going to talk to us soon about giving us the rights to our full length AND the master copy. Also, a small label up in Pennsylvania is putting out an EP for us. Every cloud does have silver lining I suppose. I’m going to attempt to respond to a few things here. Re: Emo, I have to admit that I dislike about 95% of the emo that I hear, but of course I live in RVA which is one the huge Emo capitals of the East Coast. It’s funny though, my day job these days has been working in this cafe with a bunch of emo kids, who I’m all very fond of, but we always seem to get in these passive battles over control of the cafe’s musical atmosphere. Today I kept attempting to play “Raise” and “The Sound of Speed”, and they kept trying to play Modest Mouse and some other band. Pretty silly. Re: Trail of Dead, the weirdest thing happened to me today. I went into one of the local tatto shops and I ran into two old friends who have been living in Austin, Tx. They have a band called Those Peabodies who are currently touring with Trail of Dead. My friends were stopping by the tatoo shop to see some people they knew before heading up to Washington, DC tonight to play. Not only was I stoked to see my pals again, but I met a few Trail of Dead guys!! How weird is that?!!? I wish I could have gone to see them all play tonight, but alas, I’m stuck at work like a goddamn slave. I hope you all have good weekends. My band is playing some shows down South. Take it light, my good peeps, and always ride the “expressway through the heart of it all”… -E

Personally, when it comes to music, I’m more about direct word of mouth. That’s one of the reasons why I dig this site so much – The taste. I haven’t made too many buys lately that didn’t involve you guys giving the nod, so, thanks! Chizzy – Naw. Didn’t go. Sounds like a goody though. RPM! I think it’s called the Guvernment now. That place has changed hands quite a bit, but around ’89ish it was about as happen’n has Chicago seems now. I saw Ministry there way back when. Lost my hearing for three days, but one hell of a show. In the days when you could still put a cage up the front of the stage. That night there was two drumers, 4-5 guitars, and Conneley on boards. They had guys from Killing Joke, UK Subs, and Ogre from Skinny Puppy. Awesome night. New Doves March 14th!? Beep, beep!

Dave, seriously, if the rest of your mate’s are into Marrilyn Thingumie, you need to consider some subliminal ways of converting them to the altar of Swerve…. Regarding ‘Shoegazing’, I always thought it was a bit of a shit expression. I mean, does that mean Oasis are shoegazers??(apart from the fact that Andy Bell is in the band I mean) They don’t exactly look up from their guitars much, do they? Eeeeeehhhhhhhh, I don’t know, muso journos come up with the shittest names for things. Before shoegazing, most of those bands were known as ‘The Scene That Celebrates Itself’. Since then we’ve had Grunge, Riot Grrrll, Noelrock, Dadrock(ok, I did find this one a bit funny), and countless other genres. Now we have something called Emo? What is this exactly? I think I’ve moaned enough on this. The nurse wants to take me away for my treatment and then I have to play bridge with the other pensioners….

Comment: I would have loved to have seen that show! Hey, why don’t you guys tell me what think about the NME? ::Ducks:: πŸ™‚ Hey, just about every band I liked in the early to mid ’90’s’ was considered a ‘Shoegazer’ band and the critics friggin hated them. They used to blast them for standing on stage and ‘gazing at their shoes’. Damn, here I thought being a music critic was about the MUSIC!!!! What the hell was I thinking. Just because they didn’t bounce around the stage and do crazy stunts, they have to suck. Hell, one of the best shows I saw at the Metro in CHicago (Besides SWD) was Slowdive. They sounded more awesome in concert than on any recording they made, IMHO (The show was that good musically). For me, a good critic is someone who listens to the record and has a good ear and says, if you like ‘A’ band and ‘B’ band, you might like ‘C’ band. The guys that just say ‘A’ totally rocks but ‘B’ sucks ass are the ones I try to avoid. I’m not interested in the critics taste. I just want to know what it sounds like! The true power of the internet to put those puppies out is our ability to listen to it from here and make our own decisions. Unless it is labeled SWD or TH in which case we just order it. πŸ™‚ Dream well Swervies…SD

I said 1500.00 He shook his head and laughed and said a guy won it for 5,000.00. Then he figured the kid had paid so much he flew to the US, Chicago I think to deliver it to him in person. He said the guy had a bunch of friends over so they walked down to the local music store, plugged in and Adam gave them their own private concert! How fucking awesome is that?!!!

Comment: Having had to face a critic or two in my time, I have to say that the entire medium is full of shit. Really. Ultimately, a reviewer has to sound like he knows what he’s talking about, which makes them a bunch of know-it-alls, which means they have to always be right, which means you can never win with them because they’re indistructable. Even if they decide to make shit up or put forth false assumptions in the pursuit of sounding like they know-it-all, because it doesn’t matter to them one way or another, because they just move on to the next review. Who reviews the reviewer? I mean, what kind of credentials does one really need to be a critic? None really. Just a basic knowledge of their chosen topic, and a B-52 full of bullshit. How can one quantify subjectivity? Everyone is a critic, and everyone has an opinion. That’s fine. But not everyone has access to a media outlet for which their opinion can be flushed out into the ether and gossipfry someone else’s opinion. The critic’s greatest weapon: The power of suggestion. Blah! Thanks guys, I feel better now. Cheers! P.S. Should there be anyone on this board who has happened to choose criticism as a profession, I hope in the grand spirit of swerviesism we can be friends, knowing that you have always given the swerves 5 outta 5, or a “thumbs up”, or whatever it is you freaks do.;)

Comment: Hairy, I think that guitar ended up not selling. Most likely it’s still in Adam’s possession. Did you guys ever hear that Billy Childish song, “I Hate the Fucking NME”? Seemed an appropriate thing to mention for now. Go down in flames you talentless, muckraking, pretentious, twats!! (Sorry). -E

Comment: Aha! The can of worms that is the printed press has been opened!!! Don’t even get me started people!!! Nah, seriously I couldn’t give a monkey’s what they think. Seb’s right, it’s only a matter of time b4 the NME bites the dust. 12 years ago, that paper was almost a bible for me. Now? Well, I think the fact they are struggling so badly in terms of sales that they have to put pish Kylie Minogue & Slipknot on the cover says it all. Why are they goin’ down the tubes? ‘Cos of sites like this, that’s why. Personally, I’d rather share my passion for/get info about the bands I love from sites that don’t pidgeonhole them and then write them off as shit six months later. I’d actually go as far as to say I F*****G HATE THE NME AND ALL IT STANDS FOR!!! Right, sorry folks, I kinda lost it a bit there. You can tell it’s been building up for a while!! Actually, the last time I really read anything about Los Swervies was when Magic Bus came out. Mark Lamarr (British comedian/tv presenter) was guest reviewing in MM. Said he loved the band but thought that the fact they released a cover was dissapointing…..

Comment: hi zach – it was a band called chuck from my home town, reading. the review had nothing to do with the music, just slagged them off. typical nme really. i’m now in a v bad mood as my boss has told me i’ve got to work in scotland on the 20th…. the same day as adam’s acoustic show in london. typical…….

Comment: Yeah, I dont really pay attention to what some shitty magazine has to say, i mean at the end of the day its thier opinion, its not law or something. So i just take it as the next marilyn manson fan slagging off swervedriver….you just ignore them and reply with a stupid sounding “yeah”…then move on. I dont really think Kerrang is anything good either, think about it compare Sugar (teen pop magazine) with Kerrang (so called “real music” magazine) and you will notice they contain similar information….its just gossip about the “pop stars” or “rock stars” I feel like i loose braincells when i read kerrang. However this is only my opinon (smiles). Rock On People to whatever music you think kicks arse. Cya Later –Dave

Comment: I agree with Mr. Dan’l. Even great critics who I tend to agree with, such as Lester Bangs or David Fricke, are often full of shit. It’s funny though, it seems that every non-British critic has given Swervedriver great reviews. They’re press darlings almost everywhere execept for their home country. WTF???!!!

Comment: yay! acoustic show in london!!!! re : nme – kerrang now sells more than nme. the public have had enough of shite biased journalism. i stopped buying it a year ago coz i was fed up with their reviews. my housemate has the dubious honour of having signed the only band who ever got 0/10 in nme album reviews… the album is actually really good. says it all really……

Comment: Shed some light, anyone. Last year I was in Salvador, Brasil for the carnival. I heard a tune that sounded familiar in one of the music shops in the old town but could not immediately recognise it. It was in Portugese (I think) but I knew an English rock version of it. The thing that bugged me was the little octave spanning two note riff after the chorus. It later came to me that it was ‘Rave Down’. So are Swervedriver known in Brasil or did the band borrow the tune? Anyone know?

Comment: Boy could I ever use a Swervedriver show right now. Music in general needs a shit-kicking by swervedriver right now. Two shows in Toronto in early ’98 are still two of the most ‘rockin’ since… and thus I lament…. when?
