Lay back & listen to he whole album alone, its a trip. Listened to ‘Pancake’ off their first one on the ride to work today…gawd that song rules.

Comment: This one’s from Jon of Superchunk. He writes in his 2001 tour diary about the time he worked in a record shop and attended a lady that was looking for a record by the Clash: “This reminds me of the time I worked in a record store in Greensboro, N.C. and a woman came in seeking “Rock The Casbah” and asked my co-worker for the song that had the lyric “Siamese don’t like it,  not the cat’s fault.”” Hehe, this is superb! I think if Jez quit publishing the book, at least he could write his tour memories and put them on the site. I remember the Swervies’InfoZine used to offer marvelous stories about the band’s trips and gigs.//I heard that the new issue of Spin magazine comes with an article on the resurgent wave of college rock in the U.S. If this is true, it may be good news indeed. Think I’ll wait for it get quality and then head for Boston, the coolest city in the U.S. (sorry new yorkers, l.a.ers, friscoles, etc…), and hopefully get to see some shows.//and yeah, “musical algorithm”, too metaphysical definitely, I think “timeless and unique” should suffice :)//”Sounds and spells, magic blast/who cares what they cast…” (Jonathan Mercury Rev)

Comment: This is last call so let me just reiterate my point about the Beatles: The fab four have nothing to do with time and doesnt belong on that list (let alone when placed side-by-side with Korn…). Beatles/Stones, Bach/Beethoven, Miles Davis/Bill Evans (please buy the album “Alone” and you’ll understand), these are all parts of the musical algorithm, you just can’t compare…//Cheers!

Comment: Ok, I gave up quoting Mr. Rabid, the whole text’s worth a reading (unless you’re a true, poster-hanging fan of the Strokes…). I don’t know if any of know took the time to read Spin’s article on “The 50 Greatest Bands of All Time”. I know EVERYONE would say yes to some names, and no to others. I acquiesced to several bands in that list, despite the fact that they’d never spend an hour on my turntable. But, apart from some laughable suggestions (Korn?), there’s one serious mistake I’d like to point out. They chose Beatles for number one but this is wrong. “Of All Time” presuposes history, the passage of time. But Beatles is A-HISTORICAL. We’re talking metaphysics here, come ON…//Vdub, if you’re a big fan of Swirlies, do not miss out on those two new tunes, whihc I hope are the forerunner of a full-lenght LP that’s sure to be among the very best this(or next year), if they don’t fill it too much with those random noise bursts with announcements (the last LP “They Spent Their Wild…” had too many fake tracks filled solely with screech-scratch…)//M’afraid the gentleman I mentioned down there goes by the name of Steward Copeland, and not “Steve”. Cya!

Comment: Ian’s got something there. I remember ages ago Jez talking about a vacation/trip that included a visit with The Dandy Warhols and then Steven, the drummer of the Flaming Lips. I also remember talking with Steve George ages ago, and when the subject of the Lips came up, he said something like, “Hey, they’re just like us!” Not so much as a direct comparison, but more in a philisophical way. Anyway, my point is is that there may be a connection of some sort between the swervies/Toshack and the Lips. On an another note, just saw Ocean’s Eleven and there’s a very cool tune right at the end of the movie that totally reminded me of Cars Converge on Paris. Just some random thoughts y’all. Hope the weekend treats ya right. Cheers!

Comment: Right!! I’ve got a question. I just heard the new Flaming Lips album and by the end of it found I had to change my attire cause I *** myself at the sheer, utter, unbelievable magnificance and beauty of it…which leads me to the question. Why the fuck arnt Toshack Highway supporting them at some point on they’re tour!!!??!? The similarities in sound between the two albums sticks out a mile!! In fact, I’m going to the Lips website to put messages up telling everyone to get the Toshack album (if you can still get it) in the vain hope that someone might see bloody sense and book what could be the gig of the fucking century!! Who’s comin?….

Comment: Just read (only too late, I know…) Mr. Jack Rabid’s text on “2001 in Music (A Look Back)” (bigtakeover.com), lotsa fun indeed. A 10-page overview (no photos!) on last year’s feats and defeats, lots of info and an optimistic conclusin (“I…am pleased to note the second straight year of improvemnt over the moribund 1999”). Judging by the steep slump in the teen junk pop sales, it certainly may be true. Here’s an excerpt that deserves full quoting: >. Heheh, spot on. He also suggests that “the time is ripe for something big to happen, but no one knows how to find the future in music”. It certainly is time for a new pied piper to call the tune here, but I don’t nourish that kind of hope…It’s not that I don’t want it to happen, the prob is it takes a lot of inspiration, it takes a Brian Wilson, a Townshend, a Steve Copeland, a Frank Black…At one point the scene was such that we had to bring in T-W-O Reid brothers in order to fix it. It’s hard graft, seriously…Meanwhile I keep diggin deeper underground looking for good stuff to listen, and there’s a LOT of good stuff happening. Wanna a tip? Go to bakedbean.net and try a song called “I Think I’m Leaving Camus” by Alotia. One and 1/2 minutes of pure cristaline pixies-ish pop that’s also very well played (listen for the drums), by a band that, judging from the other songs available, seems to be fighting on the post-rock front (Tortoise-style). And what a good surprise to find also at bakedbean.net that Swirlies are still rocking, and rocking SERIOUS.”Give us moon rocks”, brilliant new tune, beautiful melodic lines squeezed between two chunks of string-pounding guitar chords…and of course the classic soothing vocals of Mr. Tutunjian. Talk about high-wrought lo-fi gems (if I may..). Ok, time to give Cosmic Rough Rider’s record another spin (Ok, only too late, I know…) and stash some cash to by the BigTakeover. g’night!

Comment: Metallica’s “and justice for all” (now aptly titled–thanks lars–you fuck) was one of the albums that helped me learn to really play guitar (aside from “Never mind the Bollocks” and “Combat Rock”). There’s some fucking amazing work on that album (AJFA)(which was their last good one– I might add). I still listen to it quite often. Finally heard that swerviestock accepted payment from me, anyway. I guess that’s good news. Can’t wait to hear “It’s All Happening Now” off of ESR in good quality. Whoever has that Jazzy is one lucky bloke- I’ll tell you what. Later all– off to band practice with chizz (I think … there’ll be beer drinkin’ anyway…)

Comment: I’m with Hairy on the Jazzmaster… if I had my paws on that, it would take a bullet to the head to cause me to part with it! As for Mr. Matt in Jersey… I’ve got no real qualms until you start listing Bon Jovi… I mean… shit mate, come on now!! he’s a REAL great musician… FOR ME TO POOP ON!!! (HA!) Any near hostilities you may rcvd are clearly based on the fact that this is a message board, and any big solicitations, even ones put up by ADAM are done through e-mail and postings on other sights, which may be linked… it’s all about proper social mores and etiquette.

It’s a phaser with a stereo pan- but here’s the thing: you set the phase sound to either left, right, or center channel. trippy as fuck. Comment: Fester–man that new Flaming Lips is amazing. I too have a bootleg–no track listing or anything, but man-oh-man what an album. Have you noticed all the songs about death and dying between the Soft Bulletin and this one (I don’t even know the title!!!)? I just thought it was kind of weird. I like the “she’s a blackbelt in karate” song, and the “dun-nun-nun-dun-nun-nun-nun” (sorry) noisy instrumental with all the screaming… And BTW, our (Chizzy ‘s& mine) band, Corsair played a show with the Flashing Lights here in Buffalo, like 2 years ago. They were pretty cool. Zach–as far as new shit, I’ve been diggin the new DJ Shadow cd. It’s pretty smoove. Later all………….
