Made me wax nostalgic for early 90s, college days of playing music, listening, hiking, fun…..sniff. Now I am married and concerened with Amperages for fuseboxes and outlets. Oh well. I can still listen to music and play guitar. This will stave off the old/fat/bald/slacks elements of marriage. At least my wife isn’t fat. YEEEOOORGHH!!!! P.S. Never heard a note of ESR, been saving it since 1996, figuring it will be “new” to me when I get aroud to it, after Swervedriver has stopped recording. I also have pulled off my ballsack. Bush (the band) sucks!!!! Should I check out Slowdive?? I have been “saving” them for about 11 years now. Thanks porn stars!!!!! -JoeT.

Hopefully you’ll be gigged in the same area as Adam. I hope that everyone who posts here is able to see him perform at least once. I often think of when I saw him play in Washington D.C. last summer. A dear friend of mine who’s a every bit the Swerve fan that I am recently tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend. I was his best man. At one point in the evening during the wedding we had the DJ play, “These Times”. It was a mighty fine evening. Take care all. -E

Is California treating you well? I’m sure it is. Every Cali-transplant that I know loves it out there. Yeah, Dragstrip’s going pretty well. A few labels have been showing some interest so I’ve been trying to book us as much as possible. We should finally be making the trek out west in February. I’ll let you know. Royboy, Sonic Youth was great. They opened with “Cotton Crown”, played “Shadow of Doubt”, “StarPower”, “Drunken Butterfly” and many other gems. Their new stuff sounded great too. Man, this just like old times. I need to start communicating on this thing again. Has anyone heard from Art in awhile? Seems like he’s keeping this thing up and running, but I was curious as to what’s going on with him. Anyway, good to hear from all of you. Take good care y’all… -E

I found this site that indexes internet radio sites. http://www.mikesradioworld.com and I started to check out the college public stations. A bunch of good stuff, but I have no idea what I am listening too half the time. It’s like a part-time job, very low pay.

I’ve been trying to read the archives from the past few months to see what’s been going on with everyone. I hope you are all doing well. Me, I’m just doing the same ole thing. Rocking steady, working, trying to hit as many good shows as I possibly can, (saw Sonic Youth a few weeks back). I’m also doing to booking for the Dragstrip Syndicate these days which keeps me fully occupied, (that’s probably the main reason I don’t post as much anymore), but don’t for a minute think I’ve forgotten about Swervedriver or all of you. I want to give warm greetings to all my old school pals that still post: Art, Tuomas, Kik, Ghost, Dan’l, Sundog, Billie, Ian, Hairy, Royboy, Chizzy, (everyone else I may have forgotten to mention), and of course to all the new folks out there as well. Adam, Jez, Jimmy, and Steve, I hope you are all happy men these days. I will always be thankful for all the times I have seen the band live, and even moreso that I got to know you in person. Take good care of yourselves. I have never lost the feeling. -E

Date: Wed Sep 18 10:10:55 2002 Name: Danno City/State/Country: KC Comment: Mike, obviously I have no way of confirming this, that is unless Jez should chime in here on the topic, but I was recently told by a band member on a Century Media band, that a tour bus alone cost $5k a DAY! to be riding around in. Now, I don’t know what the sales of 99th Dream was, but it does make me think that the label or the band wasn’t walking away w/ pockets full of cash. I really don’t know, I’m just thinking that the story I was told could have some merit to it. I also don’t wish to be misunderstood, that I’m try to talk smack about the band! I’m not, I really dig them and would love to see them play one more show. Who knows, maybe the label just made bad overall business decisions. It seems like they weren’t making tons of cash off the other bands that were on the label either. Lastly, I wondering if anyone knows the situations about 99th Dream almost coming out on Geffen and then suddenly ending up at Zero Hour! Cheers, Danno

Date: Tue Sep 17 12:54:10 2002 Name: Danno City/State/Country: Kansas City, but soon to be NYC Comment: So I sat here at work, with nothing really to do yesterday, and read the 3 parts of Jez’s book that are here to read. I found it very entertaining and funny at some points. It is cool to read about that world, that we as HUGE music fans may never experience, but yet we wonder about! The last segment about Dallas the bus driver was great! If only Jez could get a publisher! I’m thinking that many would read this book, and perhaps bring some much needed attention to the band, even if it is after that fact(although I hope that isn’t the case). Anyway, I spoke to someone the other day, who says that he was a touring sound engineer for the SWD/Hum tour that happened here in the states. This may not be new info, and I don’t mean this as a knock to SWD, but he said that it was SWD that caused Zero Hour to go under! I don’t know, maybe so, but is seems that it would have to have been a bit more than that to cause the labels demise! What other bands on that label were a worth damn? Perhaps some of you know more than me! What so you think?

Date: Tue Sep 17 02:53:09 2002 Name: Bertrand City/State/Country: Belgium Comment: I’m coming here for about 3 years now I think and the most interesting thing is the fact that the first addicted are almost all gone. As if they were tired of hoping for something that “could” happen with a low probability (let’s just hope not) now. And in the end, that’s always the same in here at every change in the visitors, restart the same cycle. I’m not complaining, ’cause I like the band enough to read everything with the envy of a beginner but I’m not sure some are not tired. Not any mails from the mailing-list neither, as I said, the old fanbase is at a kind of dead point. The only thing to do is to put Raise in your tape player or CD player or disc player and listen to it for a lot of years until the end.

Date: Mon Sep 16 13:58:10 2002 Name: Dan City/State/Country: Chicago Comment: St Helens Dave – I was just trying to get a rise (Raise?) out of Art – but, sad to say it, but it appears to be late in the game concerning SWD’s career. They’re not giving Art too much to work with. The interest that drove the aforementioned to put together this site, the comps, etc. has waned. I’ve been posting/reading here for about a year now, and even the level of activity between then and now is… subdued. Not so much past tense “we loved SWD!”, as it is “are they gonna put more music out or no?”. Some people feel that a band is somehow obligated to dole out the “same old, same old”, just cuz it made them feel good. If they aren’t gonna put out, they want to take their attention and move on. A band is *not* at the beck and call of their fan base – even tho one might think so after buying the poster and the t-shirt and the lapel pin and all the bootlegs. That attitude is largely due to the uprising of the music industry in the last century. An artist (or a band of artists) has but one commitment – to bring to life what it is that makes them tick. Considering the trouble SWD has had with labels in the past, danny boy’s “straight to internet” idea is a very good one. Anyway, sorry for the rant… the mystery surrounding SWD’s return continues… it would be too cool to see SWD/Toshack be part of establishing the 21st century way of doing music business… space travel rock n roll, and all…

Hey Jez…sell print your book, sell a shitload, save the dough, go on tour and charge us eager bastards 40$ a pop, and make a dream come alive. I must hear Duress live at least one more time before I die. Whaddaya think?

Date: Sat Sep 14 21:05:30 2002 Name: danny boy City/State/Country: montreal Comment: O.K. this is it…when the hell are these guys going to go out on tour again. They must!!! There’s no question. Considering their problems with record companies, why can’t they put out a low budget cd of new stuff and sell it via internet. Jesus Christ..technology permits this kind of thing. Besides, that would sure beat having to go into a studio to produce one of the finest albums ever recorded (Mezcal Head), spend a shitload of cash that they’ll never make back and later write books about their misfortune. I think they underestimate their fanbase. Anyway, if they dont come around soon, I’m gunna be forced to get a tribute band together and bring the music out to the people. But I dont want to do that. (And I dont think a song like Duress could ever be played by anyone but themselves. Peace

Date: Sat Sep 14 14:12:46 2002 Name: jerry City/State/Country: High Plains Comment: I have a boot of a Swervedriver Peel Session. Did that ever get a legitimate release? It has a song called “Over” which is not on any studio recording. The other songs are Out, Volcano Trash, and Zedhead. “Over” also pops up in an early live boot, circa 1990, but disappears after that. Who sings the vocals anyway? At least the fist part is someone else, then Adam takes over in the chorus.

The comps have a lot of miles on them – I wonder how I got along without ’em before. I’m not comfortable with the bootleg issue, but what are ya gonna do? Ajay’s odc.net list is sporadic but active, and usually has the same personalities popping up with interesting views. It’s the only list I’m on, so I don’t mind it. Who’s Dan Chan? And what does he have that I don’t? 🙂

Date: Thu Sep 12 19:16:02 2002 Name: Dan-o City/State/Country: Chicag-o Comment: Maybe the thing to do is hook up with all the old school Swerve nuts out there… the folks who put the “Passenger is Wired” and “Serene/Surreal” CDs out. Maybe use the same methods for putting a quality video comp together. I know I’d lay out good cash for it. Been wondering where RudAwakning, Art, Ajay, etc. have been. Understandable if they lost interest… but does this site run on autopilot, or what? I’m a lurker on Ajay’s Swerve list… for the last year, pretty much the same names pop up. I remember Rud asking about recording with computer equipment, and that’s about it. Say la v…

I’ve seen the video topic kicked around some up on here before – somehow it never pans out. I’d lay out cash monies for early/late & any/all Swerve vid. Ironic how much “the MTV” has shaped my rock education, yet I’ve never seen anything more than the Road Rash vid. Matt/NJ – I’d gladly kill a weekend night with 4 hrs. of bad quality Swerve vid – somethings’ better than nothing… god help me if I have to watch Max X or Street Smarts again… well, OK, Street Smarts isn’t all that bad…

Lost a lot of the intimacy though in the crap warehouse setting, I really do hate that venue, unless you are pressed against the stage any hope of getting into a show is basically out the window.

Date: Tue Sep 10 22:56:20 2002 Name: Fester City/State/Country: Toronto Comment: est-Good to see you back. Yeah, it was a cool show, I mean, its the Doves. You’re right though, the other one was better. Mainly because the acoustics at the Warehouse completely suck, but mostly because it was basically the same show. That’s a silly thing to say, I know, but even the encore was the same. Just hoped for a little variation. I dare to compare, but when Swervie doubled through here in 98, they broke it up large. Yet, one of the many countless reasons why they rock. Cheers!

I also have one for Magic Bus which is just a load of Snowboarding, though it’s pretty cool, it’s from the daytripper snowboard movie, i guess there’s one like that for ejector seat reservation from the Odd Man Out movie too, though i haven’t seen it. Someone should put them on the internet if they can/know how?

Date: Tue Sep 10 11:37:26 2002 Name: royboy City/State/Country: bflo Comment: I friend of mine had a video titled “On the Road with Swervedriver”. I’m not sure where he got it, but it had lots of swervie footage. “Sci-Flyer” @ CBGB’s, interviews with a Boston radio station, some sound check thing where they played the “Twin Peaks” theme, some other show footage, as well as the videos you’ve all listed. Pretty cool, though I think the tape dissapeared some years back… cheers.

Prepare for a Mitchy ass-kicking on the 11th. He’s not happy.;) I was channel surfing the other day and just by amazing luck caught Bowie on MTV berating them for not supporting bands like the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. Date: Sat Sep 7 01:21:23 2002 Name: Ralphy City/State/Country: Duluth,Minnesota USA and God bless us All!!!!! Comment: I already did pull my balls off Ricky! Man, I hate to think of a screwed up world of ours without the music of Swervedriver to help with just getting thru everyday life anyway. God heel US! .I remember sharing a smoke with the boys before their first ever gig at First Avenue main roon in Mpls. I asked them if they had ever heard of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry ( my fav band before Swervedriver came along). They said they never heard of the Lorries. I was shocked as I was convinced they were influenced by the Lorries (my own foolishness as work as usual). Anyway, I saw Swervedriver at 7th Street entry (I think their second ever gig in Mpls or maybee even their first; their 1st ever Mpls gig could have been at the Uptown Bar??? ) and what a gig that was. It is still in my top 3 for my best gigs I have ever been to. Their music blew my mind beyond the limits of my musical introspective observation!!!

This may be old, but did anyone ever see a site called the bible of alternative rock maintained by trouser press (www.trouserpress.com)? Jack Rabid (the big takover)wrote the swervedriver summary. I really like the idea of that, but maybe a little more detailed. Did anyone ever see it or know of a better one?

After a long Labor Day weekend with Doves “Lost Souls”: it doesn’t have the bombast that made SWD rock (bombast = i.e., ‘I Am Superman’), but still a very slick record.

So laid back, AMAZING BEER (and herb), great food, not too spendy, really nice people (although some are a bit hippie-ish–oh well). Saw Burnside skatepark –didn’t bring my board though, but lots of pics. I’ll get ’em up sometime soon. I missed some of the best shows ever. A band by the name of Sonic Youth., as well as Wilco & Nebula… I saw the big rocks from the movie “The Goonies” at Cannon beach, on the coast. All in all — a fan-fucking-tastic trip. Thinkin’ bout movin’. Later…

Would be good to catch up and discuss the “old” days and characters, The Arms,Bude,Surfing,Abergonolwyn etc. Still haven’t heard any of your music but this Swervedriver mularkey appears to be rather popular – a little more so than The Rabid Dogs, The Jacklsons etc. Ta Ta For Now – Matt B
