Comment: I posted this before, without any response. I believe it bears repeating : Has anyone tried cutting the Toshack tracks Valentine #1 and Board The Bullet Train, then reversing them (using a standard wave editing software like Soundforge, Wavelab etc)? The results are astounding. You will of course be aware that Board The Bullet Train is Valentine #1 reversed anyway, with overdubs from Adam. now listen to BTBT backwards, and it sort of sounds like Valentine #1 – yet is altogether brilliant and different. Suffice to say, I believe those 2 songs have the most beautiful melody of any song bar “Soon”.

Comment: It’s okay Dan’l – just pulling your leg about the JD track (attempting post-irony!). Although anyone who’s suss enough to give covering a Joy Div song is okay in my book! Cos they were gods amongst men. As for SWD, why can’t I find any fuckin live tracks anywhere! In this day and age you can normally find the most obscure shit somewhere, mp3-wise or otherwise. It’s like half the people here have access to all these live tracks etc apart from me! I’ve got the memory of seeing them live, of course (in 91 and twice in 93) but for prosperity I’d love to get my hands in some live stuff – past OR present!

Comment: to bertrand and many others here…you may enjoy living in the past, but why should adam or the rest of the band do so as well?..to say that he shouldn’t try new things musically, and vocally….times change, people move on. I happen to think that his new stuff, including reworked swerve stuff has reached a new level of songwriting, and talent in playing. He is trying to satisfy the fans by playing songs he wrote 10 years ago. and to say that the new stuff isn’t good, and is “annoying” (i know it’s a matter of opinion), try listening to the new split if you can, and anyone who truly respects adams song writing, and not just the “wall of sound”, will be so glad that he is still writing, recording, and playing live.

Comment: ricky….re: all systems go….obviously it wasn’t as good as swd, but it was still totally cool…he tought them some songs and they rocked out ! marc arnold is actually a really good player, he just came off tour with the breeders….ps, the new stuff that adam is doing are totally different than the first acoustic gigs….he’s playing his jazzmaster loud with effects and has a drummer….you would all be super stoked….in some ways it’s cooler than swd because the guitar playing has reached a new level of insanity…and many of the old songs have been re-worked….

Comment: No offense meant, Simon – I’m referring to posts such as Jerry’s from May 13th (and a few others that I’m too lazy to search for, but remember reading). Again, no offense, but what Joy Division track? We were doing a jacked-up version of “Interzone” in my last band, but no reference in my post…? For Bertrand: I’ve found live SD to be spatially different to be sure, but disappointing? Some tracks yes and some no, so I guess I’m with you. For lack of a better description (I’m banging this out so I can catch my train home for the weekend :)) I find some of the live stuff delicate in a manner unlike any of the studio work – a given without all the processing – but that’s the nature of the beast. The first Toshack LP didn’t do anything for me at first, but I grew into it, which make me appreciate it that much more. Again, the anti-flash-in-the-pan at work that we like so much. Shit here comes the train gotta go!

Comment: Dan’l – don’t assume we’re all “folks who’ve discovered them way after the fact, gushing about how good they are/were”. I was there when Raise was released and have been a devotee ever since. Incidentally I can’t find that Joy Division track you were mentioning in the same post.

Comment: I really think as Dan’l. Was listening to Adam solo live Dave let us download a few months ago, sorry to say so but it wasn’t that great, ways too slow and sort of annoying. I think he was playing sciflyer, a so beautiful song. Sad. And why the hell trying so many things with his voice? Keep it simple. What’s the point of reaching high tones while slowing them to a ridiculous tempo? Adam is not Thom (Yorke). We don’t want sleeping music, we want some rythm some enjoyment some do do da da do do da (drum section of Satansville). So, I know everyone’s getting older and wiser but I’m not really sure this is the sort of music we (or maybe just I) were (was) expecting, I think we are in some way living through Swervedriver’s past. Which is never a good thing. I love the 4 records but then, I was deceived. Personally, I think (for myself), Adam really needs Jimmy, Stephen and Jez. I know you won’t like my writing but that ‘s just my disappointed opinion after Toshack relaease and some listening of A dam solo live concerts.

Comment: Thought about this some more on the train home last night… SD’s career is sort of enviable, actually… despite the downfalls. They could have gone through the typical record lable machinations: chewed up, spit out, and forgotten like so many other bands fronted as the flavor of the month. Instead, evidenced by the occasional posting here by folks who’ve discovered them way after the fact, gushing about how good they are/were, the SD legacy is weighty in that record companies *were not* able/willing to commodify them. I think that speaks volumes about Adam & the boys’ craft. Moldy as producer, as well – shit, who did the fucking Pumpkins turn to for a shot in their arm? Anyway… I think it’s time to realize that, despite the “maybes”, SD is no longer. I hope I’m proven wrong.

Comment: Yes, Dave, a final show would be good closure. It would be to me what a night at the opera is to effete men who wear ascots, and carry small shi*bag dogs. When I saw some footage of Audioslave playing on a roof in NYC this year, it was very vitalizing. Loud guitar, Chris Cornell growling and harmonizing.

Comment: All I wish is that Adam and the rest of swervedriver did one last tour then called it quits. They could do another album which would be great but I think they know it wouldn’t sell too good. One last tour for all thier fans and then just close the swervedriver chapter.

Comment: Devil’s advocate speaking here… on one hand, I wholeheartedly agree SD got the shaft through the 90s… on the other, it *is* water under the bridge, the members older and wiser (and possibly not interested in winding out the genre). It would be nice if Adam came through here with some form of a band, though… for old time’s sake…

Comment: You’re spot on, Derl – I’ve been saying that for years (mainly to myself, as I dont know many other people who’ve even heard of The Second Best Band In The World). If I won the Lottery I’d make em an offer they couldn’t refuse! Not for them the rarities or b side compilation, rehashes, repackaged and remastered to fuck. Oh no, we have to make do with their 90s output!Still, my fave band is My Bloody Valentine and they released about 2 hours of music in their lifespan, so I’m used to disappointment.

Comment: For the love of god, I can’t take it anymore…can we just take up a collection of money and just pay them to get back together? If Swervedriver never comes up for air again to claim the credit that is so rightfully theirs, it’ll be one of the greatest tragedy’s in rock music history. I sound pretty fired up, sure, but come on…this is ridiculous

Comment: Met Adam before the show… Sianspheric was blaring on the stage some of the songs he played where Stella Caprice, 99th dream, the sounds and the times, the other jesus and some songs I didnt recognize cause I dont have the split single yet. Adam got on stage at about 1:00am it was great to see his gear on stage (having a personality and history of there own). Fuck Adam can guitar! He makes it look to simple…. I asked him the question that has been on everbody’s mind, Swervedriver? Adam shrugs and laughs… Dont know.. Mabey. Well that mabey is good enough for me. Saw the flaming lips yesterday. I cant believe what I saw. By far the best show I have ever been to.. except for the swerve show back in 98. Vancouver is the place to be my friends.

Comment: You’re right of course Dan (I was just being ironic btw) – they were always lumped in with the “Shoegazer” scene as opitomised by the likes of Slowdive, Chapterhouse, Ride etc but were the antethesis of these bands. Muscular rhythym section, kick-ass in-your-face guitar sound (as opposed to using the guitar as a sort of soundscape like Slowdive etc) – they had more in common with some Kerrang! type bands. MBV weren’t shoegazers either – they invented their own sound (which has yet to be surpassed to my ears). Lazy journalism is what it was. New Super Furries album out soon – the single Golden Retreiver rocks!!! Fuck yeah!

Comment: Yeah Joe T – loved some of the Boo Radleys stuff – especially their first “proper” album Everything’s ALright Forever. ‘Does This Hurt?’ must be about the best song from this whole era! They did fab b-sides too – although like just about every band from this scene (apart from our Swervedriver) they went off the boil a bit trying to disown their shoegazing roots in order to jump on the Britpop wagon. Noel you cunt – you have a lot to answer for.

Comment: whoops, pressed submit too soon, but aaaaanyhow, I agree with you Joe T. The early 90’s were just absolute blast musicwise… I’m still really stuck to to that scene… to the point that few years back I almost tatooed “1991” in the back of my neck… whew, luckily it didn’t happen… but hey, I think that nearly all of the regulars here agree that “those were the days”. Luckily we have some of that time filed to our memories and even better, to records…

Or am I just blind? ๐Ÿ˜‰ A band here in Toronto all must check out – Broken Social Scene. “You Forgot It In People” is their latest, and its really, really good. Is that Lou by way of Bramptonia? T.

Comment: Has anyone heard The Swirlies? Their name alone suggests a shoegazing tribute band and that would not be far off what they sound like. They’re ace – go check em out – I defy you not to like them if you like MBV (who are to them influence-wise what Swervedriver are to Sian)!

Comment: Can’t get over how much that Sian track This All Happened borrows of a couple of Swervies’ tracks! Not that there’s anything wrong with that – it’s been said a million times already but bands like Ride were copied to death, yet the Swervies’ sound – melodic, hard, fx laden – has been ignored to my knowledge! How sad it is that the general listening public are ignorant to songs like You Find It Everywhere, The Birds, Duel, bla bla [goes on to list about 50 songs].

Comment: trik i saw j acoustically a few months back. he was excellent. took a mate along who had never heard a thing of j or dinosaur jr. he was blown away and now owns everything in the back catalogue. j released a live acoustic cd over here of 2 tours ago called martin and me (martin being the make of his guitar). not sure if it saw the light in oz but worth getting. did he use that mad foot pedal that allowed him to loop the strummed chords and then solo over the top? gotta get me one of those. i am off to see evan dando (and you am i ?)tonite yippeeeeeeeeeeee. the new album has really grown on me – didn’t like it at all at first now love it.

Comment: If you mean the radio station was in Canada then yes. I don’t think they have college radio stations in Hamilton, Scotland or college radio at all. I did however send a copy of the album to Beat 106 in Glasgow, so maybe you could get Jim Gellatly to play it on his indie music show. As it stands now, the split will not be out in the UK until late August, to accomidate UK press.

He still has a fantastic voice (Sinatra eat yer heart out) but the guitars are a limp compared to the ‘Sistine Chapel Ceiling’ days. The ‘3×3’ album’s quite good in a mellow way. Comment: Adorable were an amazing band. Polak are ok, but certainly are not Adorable. Pete’s vocals are the unifying link and he sounds exactly the same as he did with Adorable, but what they are missing is the wonderful guitar sound that Adorable had on Against Perfection. Add to that the fact that Polak refuse to play any Adorable stuff live and you have to call it a let down overall.

Comment: i finaly have heard 99th dream. swervedriver should have been every bit as big as oasis, radiohead etc etc etc. i was first turned on to mezcal head. about january of this year. ever since ive done all i could to get there cds. no thanks to any record stores in my area. so on ebay ive slowly and might i say somewhat exspensively been getting the cds! i still havent heard Raise but its coming soon. i just want to say that its fucking un believeable that this band was thrown to the wayside while other shitty bands were given too many breaks. i have a feeling that there will never be any more new swerve music cause if i was adam and i wrote the songs he has and was screwed over so blatantly i would throw down my guitar and scream fuck you ive just given you the heart and soul of my life and you dont know what to do with it meanwhile the fucking spice girls are riding the charts. my hats off to swervedriver i think they have made some of the most kick ass rock and roll some of the most beautiful ballads andsome of the most ear grabbing melodys ever written F you record companys and F you radio stations for being so blind

One thing puzzles though – there was a song entitled “Snowmobile” included in the Napster search results. I’ve listened over and over to this song – it is superb – but it certainly aint by Swervedriver. Anyone know what I’m on about? If so could you let me know what band actually did this track? Love and kisses.

Comment: Has anyone tried cutting the Toshack tracks Valentine #1 and Board The Bullet Train, then reversing them (using a standard wave editing software like Soundforge, Wavelab etc)? The results are astounding. You will of course be aware that Board The Bullet Train is Valentine #1 reversed anyway, with overdubs from Adam. now listen to BTBT backwards, and it sort of sounds like Valentine #1 – yet is altogether brilliant and different. Suffice to say, I believe those 2 songs have the most beautiful melody of any song bar “Soon”. That is all, Big Kiss from the UK!!

Comment: even Ian Stuart isn’t stupid enough to waste his time cutting and pasting nonsensical rubbish. And being that he’s dead – it would prove most difficult. It was some 13-year-old cretin suppressing his latent homosexuality with monotonous streams of vitriol. For the record – it was not uncommon for clueless musical press bottom feeders to look at Adam in dismay and ask – but your music is about white supremacy, no? Poor Adam would just shake his head and say – no, no, no – swervedriver – not skrewdriver. (Incidentally – I’m embarrassed to say I actually own the first skrewdriver lp – though I haven’t listened to it in more than 20 years – before they became puppets of the NF they put out one half-way decent lp and 2 singles for chiswick record…but once their politics became more apparent…they got permanently stashed in the basement).
