I don’t listen to them much anymore so it was so cool to hear so many songs that I grew up to over the past 12 years. If any of you get a chance to see them, GO! You never know when a band may decide to call it quits.

Comment: The argument’s a bit futile because no-ones going to stop me buying vinyl or change my opinion, i’ve spent a lot of time working in studios and stuff studying sound and have to say and both me and you can definitely hear the difference between Cd and Mp3, although the rate at which it is encoded does have a drastic effect on the quality. Another thing, i’ve had so many CD’s lost or stolen over the years, it’s a lot harder to lose an LP than a CD. Anyway, didn’t this start from someone wanting a copy of raise? did you get one? Isn’t it funny how these things start? CD sound is better quality than that of vinyl but the sound of vinyl just adds to my romanticised view of rock and roll, the scratches nd surface noise add to that. And i reckon everybody here would much rather watch a dvd than vhs. I wonder what swervies view of it is, i reckon they’re vinyl lovers, think about it, the first toshack album came out on vinyl and that was like two years ago. I remeber buying terraform by Shellac on vinyl and it came out like a year before it did on CD, Albini’s a notoriously difficult guy though (still one of my heroes!). Does anybody have the first Drive Like Jehu album on CD? it just sats ‘Cd’s really fucking blow’ in small black letters, that always made me laugh.

Comment: Actually, vinyl does sound better than a CD….if you can afford a freakin’ $10,000.00 stereo. I can’t. Therefore, CD’s for me baby (But I still buy some vinyl for the collectibility, large graphics, etc). Not to mention I have about 1500 cd’s and they take up much less space then vinyl. As for MP3’s sounding worse than CD’s, it’s true for many of the people who rip songs at low to intermediate bit rates. Unless you record at a high bit rate, the first thing to go is the symbols, they become all washed out. If the percussion sounds like crap, well, then there isn’t any reason to listen to it 😉 However, all my friends who are big into vinyl? They’re definitely snobs..lol! To each his own. Aidy, sorry to hear about your vinyl being lifted. That truly sux. What’s really sad is that you obviously had some rare Swervie material, and probably some other rare stuff as well, that the people who stole it won’t have a freakin’ clue about. Dream well Swervies…

Comment: Aloha, I’m a Mezcal Head fan myself. Followed by 99th. Deep down I wish I could hear the Raise songs rerecorded a’la Mezcal. Not to denegrate Raise…. I totally love it the way it is. I’d just love to hear the Raise songs recorded a the same way as Mezcal (and there’s about other 100 bands whose early stuff I’d like to hear rerecorded – Samiam for one). Blowing Cool is the all time Swerve song for me…. with Last Day coming in at no. 2. But then again…. hey, remember hearing Mustang back in the day all you 30+ folks (like me). Ahhhh. Not many moments like that in life. It puts the ‘revelation’ of Smells Like Teen Spirit into perspective (ie. music biz = marketing) Anyway, it’s good that everyone has a different experience with Swervedriver’s stuff. I’m gonna be in LA/NYC/SF from 21st July – mid Aug. If anyone lives in these cities and wants to hook up for a brew or whatever, email me at whitewatersky@yahoo.co.uk I’m travelling with a mate and we’re just staying with friends and hoping to check out as many bands, guitar shops, record stores etc as we can. Comment: well 1000+ of my vinyl got stolen in leeds (strong bloody burglar) and i miss some stuff. i now have to dj with cd’s, which is not half as much fun, and besides, if you do not have vinyl, you do not have everything by swervedriver, which tells you their attitude to vinyl! Sounds like some of you lot aren’t as anal about their music products as i am, i love the smell/feel of a new single on vinyl! i also hate it when you get a new albini cd and it says “this was recorded to be played on vinyl” as it makes me feel inadequate!!!

Comment: Well allow me to re-iterate. The purpose of vinyl and cd are the same = to play music. the differences are that the CD sounds clear and crisp, and the vinyl is scratchy and skips. Its just snobbery. And I seriously doubt I am any fool, I didn’t make my point very well at the start. and for that I apologise. And to the person that says MP3 and CD sound different…. Comment: Jeez – you vinyl junkies all talk the same! A properly mastered cd tops vinyl any day of the week. Aside from that, the very fact that every time you play vinyl you are actually contributing to it’s deterioration – needle scratching away on plastic etc. Seven inch singles were always by and large dreadful, sound-quality wise. Every old lp that i replaced with cd I was delighted with – take the 1st Damned album, fer instance. I played that to death when I was young – got it on cd a few years ago and the sound quality blew my mind. I was so used to fuckin awful scratchy shit that to hear it the way the master tapes MEANT it to sound was amazing. Anyway, what would you rather do – press number 7 to play Sunset or get out the big black plastic artifact of its sleeve (slightly scratching it in the process), then gingerly hover the needle over the gap between track 1 and 2 of side B of the lp? Like, hello????

Comment: there is definitely a different sort of sound between vinyl, CD, mp3. I don’t prefer any of them. it just depends. i do love vinyl and realize that it will someday become a rarity. so i buy stuff and then play them once or twice and stick them on the shelf, then i buy CDs so I can hear what I bought on vinyl, copy them and take the copies where ever i go because I can be a bit careless with accounting for things and like vinyl I can kill a CD in a week they aren’t that reliable. i know that’s completely ridiculous, but i’ve lost a lot of stuff, either taken or stolen or lost or broken.

Comment: I’ve go a lot of Vinyl and CD’s, tapes minidiscs and all sorts of other crap. Given the choice i buy LP’s for a variety of reasons, sleeves are bigger, more interesting (gatefold and things like that) I prefer using vinyl to Cd’s to DJ with too, and there’s still a lot of stuff out there you can’t get on CD. I love viynl and it’d be a shame to see the back of it but i reckon dj’ing is so popular that that’s a long time off. I’ve got loads of cool swervie vinyl, ESR with a 7″, for seeking heat/blowin cool, my zephyr, why say yeah, 99th dream in a cool plastic bag……the list goes on.

Download the free newsgroup reader (if you havent already) called Grabit, then download the new Super Furry Animals lp that someone has kindly uploaded on alt.binaries.warez.uk.mp3…:-) So this is what it sounds like, when Doves cry? Yo muzo boy – I have sold most of my music equipment over the years but still have my Aria Cat bass and my Marlin guitar and generic acoustic. The most pleasing thing I can play at parties/gatherings is either Blackbird (accompanied by catterwauling a la Yoko) or Rave Down. A simple guitar passage, it remains a beauty to behold when you play it solo. Sugarbabes rule, that’s the down low (“that’s ‘low down'”; “no doubt!”)

Comment: House and the borderland’s still there, i’ve picked up some swervie gems from there over the years, did you ever go to red hot records, it was the bollocks. Probably one of the best record shops i’ve ever been in. He tried to turn it into an internet cafe in about 1997 and it flopped and closed down. I was gutted. I suppose there are worse places to live. Apparently Swervedriver played here on the raise tour… i was a bit young for that though.

Comment: Whenever Joolz Holland comes on tv – like with Glasto – I fucking cringe. Like, lets here more of your plinkety-plonk honky-tonk piano shite with a bit of fucking jazz bollocks thrown in. jeez someone should tell him to sit down and shut the fuck up! Yeah, tv coverage of Glasto was patchy wasn-t it – you can always guarentee on lots of shit like Macey Gray and – worse – Davod Gray to appeal to the bank manager music “fans”!! Radiohead were a bit out of tune in places but still good – wish i was there. Really liked the Polyphonic Spree footage too. Haven’t seen the rest – just taped it. Adam Franklin was on the acoustic stage you know.

Comment: yes, my mate has a best of snub vid, there is also a dead good US special of the old later (pre smug holland) called no nirvana, which james in the falcon has, and various old ‘indie’ compilations knocking about. I have a vid of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club choosing the vids on MTV2 which includes Ride, MBV, Joy Division and Sonic Youth among others, which is really good, but you are right, there is a dearth of decent shows on telly. i remember this thing with a fat goth (she is a Times columnist) and Johnny Vaughan, which had its moments. I went to school in Stamford, and we used to make it down for the filming of Up The Junction in Cambridge, which was quite cool. I think though that Garry Crowley was the worst presenter on TV, though his shows had decent music. Even the old chart show had the indie chart every third week. The coverage of Glatonbury has not ventured to the Other Stage very often, or the New Bands Tent at all, let alone the other stages, despite having had 7 hours on terrestrial TV so far, which shows the emphasis of the TV companies. Isn’t it ace being old, so that you can moan about the good old days!

Comment: Yes Aidy I remember that. It was shown just before Duel was released as a single from the “forthcoming album” and I though ‘fuck – this is the BEST thing they’ve ever done!’. They were also on a Gary Crowley hosted program on ITV around this time where 5 songs recorded live in London were aired. The same show also had live stuff by the Boo Radleys (remember them? -fantastic!)and lots of other indie based stuff. Whither are the decent music programs now (anyone remember Snub? The show with the Pixies and the fab Butthole Surfers?)??

But, while we are on the subject, there was a swervedriver special on 120 minutes many moons ago. I remember raise tracks, never loose that feeling and snowboarding footage. Does anyone else remember this? It was cool, but i lived in leeds at the time, and we got burgled a lot, so my copy of it went the way of most things i had then. i still cry when i think about my vinyl and my guitars. Boo Hoo!

Comment: lowgold? last i heard they got fucked over by their record label which went bankrupt, they got left with huge debts owing, and then the drummer quit, you know the usual…but now i heard they got a new drummer and will soon be releasing a new cd. got this off the bigtakeover message board if anyone is interested – After Doe, we took a short walk to Village Underground, where Adam Franklin was to play (I thought) an opening set for another artist, but it turned out he was actually the headliner. After doing about 4 or 5 solo electric numbers, he was joined by a terrific drummer with a very laid-back style (forgot his name, but I think it’s the same guy who plays on the new Toshack Highway/Sianspheric split CD). The combination of the two worked perfectly, as the songs never out-and- out rocked, but instead had a nice, hypnotic vibe (which at times got pretty loud!), really drawing you in. I mean, Franklin can do the same alone with an acoustic, but I really liked this presentation. Plus, Franklin can just make so many great sounds come out of his guitar (whether it’s acoustic or electric), that his shows are never stale.

Comment: Yes Chris – Dont Stop is wierd backwards. There’s another one off Cmplete Stone roses – Where Angels Fear To TReat I think – another backwards song which when reversed soudns great. No Aidy I didnt see Mogwai in Lincoln – damn! I love Fear Satan (have you heard the blistering remx by Kevin (MBV) Shields? Also, Helicon 2 is god-like. But there are some superb songs on this new one – esp the opener. Very summer-y.Too many of their songs I feel dont have a loud/soft/loud structure, and are fairly meandering (this from someone who loves Spacemen 3)

Comment: indeed mogwai v melodic, but i prefer the more dirty soft/ heavy, quiet/ loud crescendo groundbreaking sounds of previous albums. If i wanted melodic, i have countless albums to turn to. As i say though, they have already altered their sound, so unfortunately it may turn out to be the most melodic thing thay will ever do. Remember, this is the band who had a 20+ minute single produced by 70’s disco/ 80’s electro ledgend Arthur Baker, and engineered by 80’s / 90’s/ 00’s revlutionary noisenik god Steve Albini. Comment: I too have blasted the new Radiohead lp for 3 months so am well used to it now. I think it’s fuckin ace. Same with Mogwai – ackwards step? It’s the most melodic thing they’ve ever done! Chris – yes I too use Soundforge to piss about with songs – try reversing My Bloody Valentine’s Soon – it is just awesome. And remains still the best song ever written by anyone ever!! Comment: i hate metal, yet love mezcal head the most, i must just be really stupid. duress, girl on a motorbike and last train are my favourite swervedriver album tracks. all on mezcal. would be improved by inclusion of never lose that feeling, lucky americans (apart from having bush, obviously) mogwai newie a bit of a backward step. too one dimensional, but they are already set to change sound on tour. Radiohead good, but i have had three months to get used to it, and besides, i prefer mezcal head, so what would i know? if nothing else, love swervies slagging off thatcher, remember winding up posh tory types at my boarding school in 6th form. mezcal also has memories of being THE album to relax to after all night sessions with mates.

Comment: 99th Dream/Toshack/Sian (aside from the music, the CD design really kicks ass too)/new Flaming Lips EP/new Radiohead/The Police/Gene (the first one – guilty pleasure ;)/some Beatles (Help & Rubber Soul). The thing about raise for me was the mixing of the vocals – way too hushed which is a shame because the lyrics are solid throughout. I’m a Mezcal guy, but the whole Beatles/swervie mythology/diversity of ESR probably puts it on par. Raise is king and 99th solidly completes the circle. Comment: bill – you know i say something very similiar about some of adam’s new stuff, particularly his “every day” EP which is supposed to be a collection of just demos, but I think he really acheived his style of inspired song writing on that one, (wish i knew who the girl was), and thats the very thing that i liked about swd, inspired rocking, memorable tunes, interesting lyrics. i think you kind of have to really be into music (obsessive in fact – the best fans are) to “get” what’s going on in some of the better toshack songs. Comment: I’ve never heard anyone say the production of Mezcal Head was better than Raise . That sounds just plain nutty to me. Mezcal Head I find very difficult to listen to, the guitars stick out all over the place and the sound is way too canned (condensed?). I think Raise is a million times the album, both in songwriting and in production value. One has to be a discerning listener to “get” what’s going on on Raise, while Mezcal Head’s an lp that any stupid metal head can appreciate.

Always wanted to know how they got that sound at the start of feel so real, my best guess is a whammy pedal? i know Jimmy used them. I wouldn’t say that the production on Raise was poor though, maybe it could’ve done with a bit of tweaking. Just think of how good that distortion sounds when sandblasted kicks in, as for as swervie moments go that has to be one of the best.

Comment: Yeah, if Raise had the identical producion as Mezcal then it’d be hard to beat. Such a shame that it suffered from the typical early 90’s indie production values. True enough they had a fantastic rhythm section but on Raise of course they were pushed to the fore, with the mighty guitars pushed way back in the mix. The opening bars of Feel So Real still give me goosebumps after all these years but after the intro the guitars are just lost. Whatever, this ramble will mean nothing to anyone except the most obsessive SWD fans so why waste my breath?

Mogwai played their first gig outside scotland here (in the falcon, infact). our footy team went to the millenium stadium(and lost). there is a classic horse race called The Lincoln (it is now run in Doncaster because Lincoln is so small) bargain hunt and watercolour challenge have both been filmed here, and there is an american president and a mis-spelt nu metal boy band named after us. in other words, stick to glasgow, at least you have venues.

For one thing I always admire the fact that, despite being predominantly a “guitar band” their drum sound and style is immeadiately recognisable. I used to go to the Falcon a bit – now and again I still do at dinner times (in my suit – get funny stares). Also I am a bit old for going out now so am happier to stay at home smoking a few blunts (I am 37). I used to frequent the usual shitholes that catered for anything slightly left of field i.e. the Jolly Brewer & The Vaults (ugh!). I stopped going out so much (apart from local pubs) about the time that Lincoln’s student population went haywire. Are you a student? Dont take that as an insult (although usually it is!)

Comment: I dont think that Mark or Andys or Adams or Kevin or Belinda’s vocals are weak. They are supposed to be quite quiet and have a droning like quality to them. Lets face it ride would be complete shitif James Hetfield was doing to the vocals for kaleidoscope. I think the style of singing done by them bands is very raw and emotional and i think its fantastic. The guitar is the main attraction for me from them bands, but the vocals compliment the guitars perfectly.

Comment: Well I am wanting to beef up the jazzmasters tone a lot. I really want to play heavy rock (swervedriver – for seeking heat etc) I dont want a humbucker sound, but I was thinking of putting P90’s in it? Would p90’s give me a nice BRRRRRAAAAANNNNNGG! sound on the bridge? Because at the moment it just PANK PANK PANK, flat, thin unuseable. I am convinced I can get this guitar sounding monsterous. I have a fender strat and that guitar is 100% perfect and i cant fault it. I want the jazzmaster to be its replacement and be as loud and beefy as the strat. I got a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder for bridge for the JM and it sounds completely horrid. I’ve taken it out. I really like the sound of the middle pickup selector where both are in use.. out of phase i believe? I think there is hidden potential there. CAN ANYONE ON HERE HELP ME!!!!

Comment: Everyone here goes on about Raise and ESR being Swervies’ best. What about Mezcal Head fer chroist sake? Blinding tunes – Duel, You Find It, Harry & Maggie, A Change (and so on) – fucking spot on production ( I love Raise but the guitars are WAY too low in the mix). They even hid one of their best tunes on a b side from the LP (Planes Over the Skyline – what a tune!). Only one man’s opinion (I’m 37 btw!!) but by god, I will have my say!!

Comment: Maybe mozzer’s comments were a bit exaggerated, but that’s what we’ve come to expect from him over the years, i’m not saying i agree with him – i’m not even a vegetarian, it was just cool to see what he gets up to, especially as he’s spent so long out of the spotlight. i think he came across pretty well on it. Dave, i own a Fender Jaguar and i reckon i probably know what your problems are as they are pretty similar guitars and i had problems with mine. If the strings slip off the bridge You should replace the bridge with a Fender mustang bridge which will cost about £25 from http//www.partssmart.com , and you can get replacement pickups from Seymour Duncan to fit your guitar which will beef up the tone no end, it’s well worth getting it done. Remember that Jags/Jazzmasters were designed for Surf music and were not really configured for heavily modulated space rock, which is what i use mine for. My Jag plays a beauty now.

Comment: I often wonder what it is that Mark and Lard (sorry, Andy) have done to offend people. I also don’t remember saying “strip them away and you’re left with the godawful vox of Andy/Mark”. After seeing Mark’s gig last week, accusations of a “weak” voice only really ends up sounding like a weak argument. Fair enough, Huddersfield bloke if you think Ride are overated.That (unfortunately) is your point of view and I respect your coming out of the shadows to express it. Same as I reluctantly have to respect the feelings of those people who I’ve played SWD to and have told me that “the singer has a whiney voice”. As far as feeling and vocals goes, yeah, I totally agree Simon. However, I also have to say (and this is purely MY opinion)that I would probably listen to the Flaming lips/mercury rev a lot more if nobody opened their mouth on their records. For me, that vocal style which is easily lampooned is also easily confused by too many (especially by music journo’s) with feeling. Probably not done meself any favours with those remarks but hey…. Dave, please don’t sell your Jazzmaster. I reckon you’ll miss it if you do!

And if Adam’s vocals are so bad on this live album then why would the band want to release it anyway?..since there are a number of great live recordings around (Sweden 96, Triple j 98) where Adam and Steve’s vocals are spot on. Thank God that Adam DOESN’T sound like Thom Yorke.

Comment: I too concur with your sentiments. I guess the early Ride stuff – was all about heavy guitar fx, “white noise” etc. As you say, Hairy, strip them away and you’re left with the goddawful vox of Andy/Mark. People accuse Adam of having a weak voice – I disagree. I think any voice that is intantly recognisable like Adams, as having a quality all of its own, is a great voice. No way would you say that Neil Young, Dylan etc have “good” singing voices yet they do their own thing,m so it doesn’t matter. The Flaming Lips/Mercury Rev/Grandaddy axis are easily lampooned for their weak vocal style to some, but there’s real heart and soul there. One More Robot by the Flaming Lips (from their Yoshimi album) is a beautiful song, and his vocals, although sounding like he’s struggling in places, add to the mix. Jeez, how did I get onto fucking lauding songs off Yoshimi??? Sorry to ramble – my point being? Oh yes – leave Adam’s singing voice alone people! You’re telling me that You’ll Find It Everywhere has bad vocals?? I think NOT! Up the ManU!!!

Comment: 27. “Weak, insipid, out of tune” same has been levelled at Adam in the past, bit of a old point to make, really. So what? Wouldn’t have exactly thought the truly mighty MBV’s vocals were exactly muscular, either. Getting back to Ride though, would you really have thought they were as good if they had more meaty singing? Sorry, that wouldn’t have done it for me really. The trick to Ride was that the vocals, weak as some think they were, clicked with the music perfectly. anything more would have been overkill, in my opinion. Can you imagine Adam singing “In a different place”? (actually…) However, as soon as they went into more classic rock territory, then that link was broken and it was clear they were singing in a style not completely suited to them. All of the above comes from the perspective of someone who doesn’t really appreciate singers in the conventional meaning of the word. I couldn’t hope (nor want) to sing like Cobain for example which is maybe why Ride’s vocal style holds so much more appeal for me. Agree with you comments on “DBDown” tho-if music were furniture it would be a porcelein vase, albiet one that would shatter when you get to the white noise bits. Anyway, being a SWD board and not a Ride one I will get back to moaning about Adam not playing the UK………MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAANNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment: To be honest i don’t think Alan Moulder gets enough credit because he is an absoulute genius; swervie, mbv, Ride, U2 – some of my favourite bands he’s worked with. The producer/engineer has a huge effect on the way an album ends up sounding and in that case Moulder had a big influence on the whole scene. There is a common thread stylistically with the sounds of many of these albums which probably adds to their appeal. I reckon if you listen to say mezcal, loveless and nowhere you’ll hear a lot of similarities. Which is probably why most of the people on this board like those three bands so much.

On the subject of Ride i have to say i like Going Blank Again best, but i thought Carnival of Light was cool, 1000 miles , birdman, only now are amongst some of my favourite ride songs, though i would agree that tarantula is dodgy but it hardly had Mark on it.

Comment: I’ve got to say; I just saw Adam at the Montreal show this Thursday and I was quite dissapointed. The crowd was all “hip and decked out” for ‘All Systems Go’ (who sucked by the way) and then Adam gets on, and by the end of his show there weren’t more than 15 people at the show, including bar staff. What the hell is going on? Should we blame promotions? A shitty crowd? It’s too bad, because he rocked the joint, period. Enough with this half-assed criticism about Adam covering Swervie tunes. Though he and Daniel Lanois should hook up, because they’ve got similar writing/playing styles and could do some serious damage in the mixing room. Someone with the power–hook them up!! Comment: OK, just got back from seeing Adam/Toshak here in Toronto. Here’s the skinny: Good/Great show. SWD tunes included 99th Dream, The Hitcher, Juggernaut Rides, The Other Jesus, Behind the Scenes…and Stellar Caprice. Toshak stuff from the new disk only. Much of the Swervie tunes were abbrieviated, which got a little frustrating. In fact, for the first few songs it was like watching Bruce Lee pull his punches…anyway, the crowd was up for him, and as he played, the momentum of his playing increased. Near the end people were shouting “Play it LOUD!”, and since the vibe was full of love at that point, he did. It’s funny, I’ve seen swervie play a bunch of times, and god bless the solo stuff with all of my heart, but I couldn’t get past the vision of having the rest of the band behind him. Like I said, it was a little frustrating. Shit, I would have perferred All Systems Go (whoever they may be) backing it up. Then, my friends, he starts up with Stellar Caprice, the last tune, and laid an absolute smack down on all commers. I mean, he ripped it! I breath a sigh of relief, fans whuppin’ it up, place goes crazy. Adam gets this devilish smile on his face and gives Toronto the thumbs up. He smoked it, and easily got the most sincere reception of the night. At least, IMHO. The fans are out there, and they remember. The place got all buzzie afterwords. Not bad for one man, a drummer, and a shit load of talent. 🙂

Comment: JoeT – I agree in part with your post – yes, SWD were criminally ignored by the UK music press, did very little TV etc but actually at the time UK crowds wanted Nirvana – not bumfluff like Ride. In SWD’s heyday – 91-93 – Ride were a bit of a joke by then (their best work being 1990’s Nowhere). The shoegazey backlash was in full flow in late 91 with the crowning of Nirvana as The Biggest Band In The World (and in my opinion the best – at least in 91 anyway). The UK ate them up! I should mention My Bloody Valentine here – not a US band (okay, they were half Irish) but nevertheless responsible for the most earshattering guitar noise during this era.

Comment: I dont know why people always assume that if someone with the accumulated oeuvre of Adam Franklin, plays a few songs from his “past” at a show, that it must be attributed to an attempt to appease the fans. I am sure that that is sometimes the case, but I wouldnt discount the possibility that Adam may still play a few songs from his old band, to appease himself in some way. Maybe, certain songs have grown into a new relevance…maybe they have become every bit as exhilarating to play as they were in the old days, but for different reasons. I wonder if it almost seems like he’s covering someone else’s song now? I bet that feels strange.

Comment: Annnnd, make safe. I dunno, I can see both sides on this one. On the one hand it is incredibly frustrating to hear about all these gigs accross the pond. Let’s face it, you could count the number of times SWD have played Scotland on one hand. If he prefers playing over there then fair play, it is a shame though. Regarding whether or not he should play SWD songs with others, well, Dan’s comments are pretty much spot on. It ain’t the same but its better than nothing. Coincidentally, I saw Mark Gardener two nights ago at tuts playing solo stuff and then doing some Ride stuff with his touring partners Goldrush. It wasn’t Ride but there was fucking magic in the air when he did Chrome waves and Dreams Burn Down. So in a way its sad, but at the same time its inevitable really, isn’t it? Stereolab were amazing BTW, are the still going since what happened?

I persoannly think its a shame that really there aint a Swervedriver anymore, and I would feel funny watching another band do the old classics, but Adam F has every right to do them and if it puts a new spin on the songs..fair play to the fella. its only what people want to see at the end of the day really I guess…its no different really to Macca playing Beatle songs …its what people want to see but it aint the Beatles thats for sure. I am sure Adam is big enough to read these comments, take them on board, and either not give a flying fuck and do what he wants or do whatever.

Comment: There is no point at re-doing swervedriver songs with a different band. Its either SWERVEDRIVER or ADAM FRANKLIN. The other bands can just fuck off there is absolutley no point to them. If anything Adam isnt moving on because he is just re doing swervedriver stuff with the different bands! Whats the point?! Swervedriver ended a long time ago and adam should not play SWD songs acoustically or with other bands. If he wants to play SWD music he should contact steve jimmy and jez and get rockin properly. Not these half arsed efforts which just frustrate big swd fans.

Comment: On this split release Sonic Unyon have paired two EPs Toshack Highway’s Magnetic Morning and Sianspheric’s Aspirin Age, on two discs for the price of one. Toshack Highway is the post-Swervedriver project helmed by that band’s main man Adam Franklin. Toshack Highway cuts down the guitar overkill ratio and dials up the atmosphere. The main constant from the past to the present are Franklin’s laconic and thoroughly bored sounding vocals and his unerring way with a hook. The five tracks on Magnetic Morning show off Toshack Highways’ subtly anthemic songwriting and epic feel (The Streets that Spin Off, the almost Swervedriver sounding (She’s Got) Celestial Navigation), small scale epic balladry (Cannery Row) and intimate country rock leanings (Country Grass, the acoustic The Sounds and the Times). There are no traces of the electronic soundscapes that made their debut album sound a touch generic. Instead we get classic guitar rock with brains, unusually emotional and typically imaginative. These five songs will be like manna from above to Swervedriver fans and should even win over those who thought the group were too rock or shoegazer-y.

You might think all the music night after night would get boring but I was as excited as ever to get out on the town. I was well-rested and ready for wherever the night might take me. Here’s what I saw: 11 p.m. The Penthouse I’m really putting on the miles tonight. The venue was packed as Sonic Unyon frontmen Sianspheric cranked out their brand of psychedelic distortion rock. I’d been wondering why they recently released a new split album with Toshack Highway but my questions were answered while watching their set. Toshack Highway features Adam Franklin of Swervedriver fame. It became apparent during the Sianspheric set that Franklin has been a major influence. Their hazed out vocals and swirling guitars are reminiscent of vintage Swervedriver material but with a unique approach. As my grandfather once said, “anything derivative of Swervedriver kicks ass.” Well, he didn’t really say that, but you get the point. 1 a.m. The Penthouse I scrambled back to the venue just in time for the highlight of the evening. Swervedriver/Toshack Highway prodigy Adam Franklin played a mid-length set with his guitar in hand and only a drummer to back him. He played mainly new solo material with a few Toshack Highway and Swervedriver songs tossed in to appease the crowd. His drawling Brit accent and slow, wandering style of play is still brilliant to behold. As I became totally overwhelmed by the perfection of his music, I started rambling to all who would listen about my theory on how Swervedriver was basically Radiohead 10 years before the world was ready for them. When an opportunity to watch one of your guitar heroes in a small club presents itself, you don’t easily forget. After the show, I wandered backstage and quizzed Franklin on his future plans. He told me he intends to release a full-length album by the end of the year and is now based in New York. Sadly he declined my offer of letting me join his band.
