I have just come across this forum and have never posted here, so don’t know what the general feel is. Anyway, this is something I have always thought;
I loved Swervedriver when they first came out. Son of Mustang Ford blew me away. I was listening to Dinosaur Jr at the time and the comparison couldn’t be missed.
For me they lost it probably before the first album came out. They were something quite unique, something powerful in the vein of Dinosaur Jr and some of the Subpop bands, but chose instead (after the initial couple of 12″) to lump in with their mates Ride and Chapterhouse (dreary & depressing). Its not that they lost direction, its just that they followed the wrong path, choosing to follow their friends rather than be leaders of a new pack.
