    2. DYKEHOUSE, “Western Lands”: Once known for his techno/IDM releases, Mike Dykehouse has made an unlikely — and entirely convincing — leap into shoegazing territory, combining the sonic density of Swervedriver and Jesus and Mary Chain with the darkly philosophical introspection of My Bloody Valentine. It’s the same principle behind L.A. band The Icarus Line’s latest release Penance Soiree, a wonderfully fugly explosion of feedback, squealing guitar and sonic muscle flexing that sounds like the Stooges and Strokes and Jesus and Mary Chain and Swervedriver meeting head on, through the windshield in a hail of glass, blood and bone.
