Ok here goes the rest of the analysis

Second verse – Line 1 – 2 – Given that I believe this song to be a comment on a society that intentionally divides and idealism that cause the same, I think these to lines represent ideas/ideals that back fired, if you rearrange the word order a little in the first line you get a better idea of this, thus ‘Sure-fire, backfire, golden shoes’ becomes, – golden shoes, sure-fire, backfire – something that has a glittering appeal in society, seemingly can’t fail, but inexplicably does! Is this the band again mocking the rise of subcultures in their time?

Line 2, echoes the sentiment that seemingly runs throughout the album; escapism or possibly even suicide? The whole idea that when there is nothing left, there is nothing to lose.

Line 3 – 4 – I think these lines are about the band/ Adam prompting the audience/ society to take a good look at themselves and asking if they really are happy in their current situation. They may even be accusing the target of these lines of being a little naive?

Line 5 – 6 – In direct contrast to the previous two lines these two depict a reality that is far from happy, could this be the feeling of the band trying to get their message out and loathing doing so at times because it is a arduous task when the audience (as previous lines suggest) blissfully ignorant!

Line 7 – Maybe their message is becoming so difficult to express there is an element of scheming needed for the meaning to transpire upon the audience.

Line 8 – 10 – (see explanation of first verse, posted earlier in thread)

Chorus – (Again, see explanation of first verse, posted earlier in thread)

Final verse – Line 1 – 2 (lines that follow have already been covered in an early post within this thread) – ‘Black power, gay power, black and blue’-
Speaks for itself really, these groups, as I suggested earlier, which are formed to give power to select groups of people can accidentally cause negative outcomes. This line is also upsetting as it juxtaposes the British idiom ‘beaten black and blue’ with gay and black, two types that are subject to violent attacks through small mindedness. In my mind this is clearly I cry for help and an incentive toward a social unity that has no need for separation or discrimination.

The following line feels almost futile, due to the frustration that is definitely evident throughout the piece as a whole. However, it is a piece of advice to society that bribery/ manipulation and lies are not the way forward, indeed if they take a good look at themselves and their moral code maybe they will, (fingers crossed) ‘try something new!’

Essentially, this song tells me about the strain of living in a society that prescribes to seemingly empowering subcultures for those who are usually discriminated against, which in essence seems like a positive thing, but unfortunately in practice creates a greater separation. Basically, it is a song proposing that we should take a look at each other, realise that we are all human and accept or at least tolerate the differences in opinions or else when we realise the sorry state we’re in we’ll all be seeking comfort

[8D] Hope this makes sense [8D]

What I meant by this is that if whiskey can be referred to as 100% proof, could this not be applied to all spirits, plus I’m sure I’ve heard the term with reference vodka on an advert.

First verse – Line 1 – Possible mockery of group ethics, these segmented societies/ subcultures that exist often divide and push society away from a mutually beneficial union. i.e. Black Power – could breed violence, racism, segregation = leads to rack and ruin!

Line 2 – Written possibly for rhythm alone, but could also be ideas oppressed/ adopted/ typically assoiciated by said subcultures

Line 3 – 4 – It could be a suggestion that in the social/political climate discussed in the earlier lines that Adam/Swervedriver are lost in a crowd and they are pulled through this by a desire for another person/ culture or as the later lines suggest alcohol. Could it be that society has pushed the boys toward alcohol as a form of escapism?

Line 5 – Again this could be a suggestion of a crowd scenario, are the boy’s playing a gig or in a bar, walking downstairs sideways because there are so many people around/ or going up the stairs? It definitely has connotations of claustrophobia for me. Again, they could be drawn to the bar by ‘Vodka’?

    Line 6 – 10 – ‘Vodka, sonic proof’ –

    Brand Canadian Club
    Expression – 100 proof
Type – Canadian whisky. / North America
    Abv – 50.00%

If 100 % proof can be attached to whiskey, can it be acquitted to vodka, and the sonic part would be the side effect of said alcohol or setting.

    ‘Screaming murder always ‘ –

The supersonic rush/kick you get off vodka? Alternatively, this could be the feeling of the band about these subcultures, which threaten unity or the mantra of said subcultures?

‘And trying to catch it –
    Trying to catch it
    Trying to catch it’

Nostalgia for a time or feeling past, or as the song has an element of the future (‘Fortune Teller’) it could be the struggle to grasp the future or even wrestle with the present?

Line 11 – 16 – And bring me the head of the fortune teller –
It wasn’t meant to be this way
It weren’t meant to work out this way
So bring me the head of the fortune teller
